  Draylen Ellis threw for three touchdowns and Tennessee State used a three-touchdown opening quarter to cruise to a 41-21 win over Mississippi Valley State in a season opener on Saturday. It was Tennessee State's first opening-day win since Aug. 31, 2019 when it beat Mississippi Valley State 26-20. Ellis threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Jalal Dean on the game's opening drive. On the Tigers' third possession, Ellis threw a 1-yard score to Jordan Gant to end a six-play, 77-yard drive. The scoring opportunity was set up when Ellis connected with Dean for 72 yards.

Later, Tennessee State's Micah Gray returned a fumble 54 yards for a touchdown with 1:54 left in the first quarter for a 21-0 advantage. Following James Lowery's 20-yard field goal, Ellis threw a 31-yard touchdown to Karate Brenson with 1:06 before halftime for a 31-0 lead. The Delta Devils scored when Jaydyn Sisk threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Kerrick Ross at the end of a 13-play, 81-yard drive with 13:45 left. The senior had five tackles (four solo), picked off two passes (one that he returned for an interception), recovered a fumble that he returned 20 yards and added a pass breakup. On the first play from scrimmage, he picked off a pass and raced 28 yards as TSU would never trail in the game. Early in the second quarter he picked up a fumble and returned it 20 yards, which led to a Tennessee State touchdown nine plays later. Before halftime Harper had another interception, this time returning it 45 yards and setting up an eventual TSU field goal, as the Big Blue led 19-7 at the break.   Darius Harper picked off a pass on the first play from scrimmage and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown, then stripped receiver Andrew Armstrong of the ball in the back of the end zone on the game's final play to preserve Tennessee State's 22-14 win over Texas A&M-Commerce in the regular season finale for both schools Saturday. Harper, the senior son of former Tennessee Titans cornerback Nick Harper, finished with two interceptions and recovered a fumble as the Tigers snapped a three-game losing streak. The victory makes Tennessee State (4-7, 2-3 Ohio Valley) 9-13 in coach Eddie George's two seasons.   Draylen Ellis threw three touchdown passes, two in a 24-point second quarter, to lead Tennessee State to a 37-17 win over Eastern Illinois on Saturday. After Kaleb Mosley kicked 46- and 42-yard field goals and Deveon Bryant turned a fumble recovery into a two-play, 5-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run, Ellis took over. Ellis found Karate Brenson for a 12-yard score and Devon Starling for a 49-yard touchdown for a 27-0 lead for the Tigers (3-4, 2-0 Ohio Valley Conference) with 31 seconds to go in the half. Jonah O'Brien got the Panthers (2-5, 1-1) back in the game with a pair of touchdown passes in the third quarter but Mosley connected with another 42-yard kick and then Ellis found John Roberts IV for a 52-yard score.   Draylen Ellis threw a pair of touchdown passes and raced 50 yards for a touchdown just before intermission as Tennessee State scored the first 30 points in a 30-13 win over Tennessee Tech in their Ohio Valley Conference opener Saturday. The Tigers dropped their first four games of the season and now have won back-to-back contests, including last week's 41-17 win over Bethune-Cookman. The Tigers drove 70 yards in 14 plays with their first possession to set up Kaleb Mosley's 27-yard field goal. Ellis hit Benjamin Johnson II from 30-yards out on their next possession before capping the half with a 50-yard run with :38 left.

Deveon Bryant found Jytireus Smith with a short pass for a touchdown to put Tennessee State up 23-0 early in the third quarter, and Ellis hit JJ Holloman with a 21-yard strike to make it 30-0. Jeremiah Oatsvall threw a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown passes for Tennessee Tech (1-5, 0-3). Ellis completed half of his 28 pass attempts, hitting nine different receivers for Tennessee State (2-4, 1-0). Jalen Rouse carried 20 times for 126 yards rushing.
