Tennessee moved to No. 3 in The Associated Press college football poll behind No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Ohio State after knocking off Alabama. The Crimson Tide was one of five unbeaten teams to fall during a wild weekend and dropped three places to No. 6 in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank. Alabama swapped places with the Vols after losing to them 52-49 on a field goal as time expired Saturday. Georgia remained No. 1 and received 31 first-place votes and Ohio State had 17 first-place votes.

The Vols received 15 first-place votes and have their best ranking since starting the 2005 season at No. 3. The last time Tennessee was ranked this highly in the second half of the season was 2001, reaching the top 10 in late October and headed into the SEC championship at No. 2. No. 4 Michigan moved up a spot Sunday, switching places with No. 5 Clemson after the Wolverines blew out now-No. 16 Penn State. No. 7 Mississippi moved up two spots and No. 8 TCU, No. 9 UCLA and No. 10 Oregon all moved into the top 10. - AP College Football

After 15 years of being a rival to Alabama in name only, Tennessee snapped a humbling losing streak, stamped itself a championship contender and celebrated in spectacular fashion. Chase McGrath made a 40-yard field goal as time expired to give No. 6 Tennessee a 52-49 victory over No. 3 Alabama on Saturday. As soon as the kick knuckle-balled through the uprights, some of the more than 100,000 fans stormed the field to join the party as the Volunteers (6-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) ended a 15-game losing streak to the Crimson Tide (6-1, 3-1). Fireworks went off over Neyland Stadium and it glowed orange as the song "Dixieland Delight" by the band Alabama - a Crimson Tide favorite - blared over the stadium speakers. And it didn't take long for the goal posts to go down. "This is college football at its absolute best," Vols coach Josh Heupel said. Hendon Hooker drove the Vols 45 yards in 18 seconds to set up the winner. Jalin Hyatt caught six passes for 207 yards and a Tennessee-record five touchdowns.

Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, a game-time decision because of a sprained right shoulder two weeks ago, completed 35 passes for 455 yards and two TDs. Hyatt's fifth TD catch tied it at 49 with 3:26 left in the fourth. Young drove the Tide into the Tennessee territory in the final minute, but Alabama stalled at the 33 with three straight incomplete passes. Will Reichard's 50-yard field goal attempt for the lead was wide way right. With only 21 seconds left, overtime seemed likely, but Hooker wasn't done and did the Heisman Trophy winner one better. Hooker completed two passes for 45 yards, the second a 27-yard strike to Bru McCoy that gave Tennessee a chance for a makeable field goal - and McGrath came through to give the Volunteers its biggest victory in years. Tennessee had not beaten a top-10 teams since 2006 against Georgia. That was also the last time the Vols beat Alabama. - Tennessee/AP College Football

Tennessee starting safety and captain Jaylen McCollough has been arrested for aggravated felony assault, putting his status for Saturday's game against No. 3 Alabama in question for the sixth-ranked Volunteers. Coach Josh Heupel said the team learned about McCollough's arrest on Sunday night. The Volunteers (5-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) host Alabama (6-0, 3-0) on Saturday. "As they gather information, we'll have a conversation based on the facts of it and then go from there," Heupel said. This is the third arrest for the Vols since mid-August, and the other two players were kicked off the team.

Linebacker William Mohan, a Michigan transfer, was arrested on a charge of felony aggravated domestic assault, and offensive lineman Savion Herring was arrested for domestic assault. McCollough is a four-year starter for Tennessee and is tied for fourth with 23 tackles. He had seven in a 40-13 win over then-No. 25 LSU on Saturday. The 21-year-old safety was arrested on Sunday. An arrest warrant obtained by Knox News shows police responding around 3:30 p.m. to an apartment complex where they found a man missing teeth with his mouth bloody and swollen. - AP College Football

Hendon Hooker passed for two touchdowns, Jabari Small ran for 127 yards and two scores, and No. 8 Tennessee punished No. 25 LSU for its mistakes and risk-taking in a resounding 40-13 victory over the Tigers on Saturday. A morning kickoff lured LSU fans to Tigers Stadium considerably earlier than usual - and many were gone by the end of the third quarter, when Tennessee led 37-7. The Volunteers (5-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) matched their best start to a season since 2016 with balance on offense, sound defense that corralled dual-threat LSU QB Jayden Daniels, and opportunistic special teams play. Hooker passed for 239 yards, with scoring passes of 45 and 14 yards to Jalin Hyatt. The fleet-footed QB also accounted for 56 of Tennessee's 264 yards on the ground. Bru McCoy caught seven passes for 140 yards, drawing howls of "Bruuuuuuu!" from a sizeable contingent of fans in Volunteer orange. Those fans' repeated singing of "Good ol' Rocky Top" echoed throughout LSU's Death Valley by game's end.

Tennessee sacked Daniels five times with defensive lineman Byron Young accounting for half of that total. LSU's combination of early special teams failures and costly fourth-down risks helped Tennessee build an early double-digit lead. Jack Bech had the opening kickoff bounce off his chest and straight to Tennessee's Will Brooks at the Tigers' 27-yard line. Five plays later, Small ran for a 1-yard score. Minutes later, the Vols' offense was back on the LSU 26 after Dee Williams' 58-yard punt return. LSU (4-2, 2-1) held Tennessee to Chase McGrath's 35-yard field goal, but missed a chance to trim its deficit when coach Brian Kelly kept the offense on the field on fourth and 4 from the UT 14. A quick pass to Kayshon Boutte near the right sideline came up inches short. Leading 13-0, Tennessee thwarted LSU on fourth and 1 near midfield, stopping Josh Williams' run. On the next play, Hooker's deep throw down the right sideline hit Hyatt in stride to make it 20-0. Hooker's 32-yard pass to McCoy to set up a short McGrath kick that made it 23-7 at the half. - Tennessee/AP College Football

Tennessee football coach Josh Heupel confirmed wide receiver Cedric Tillman had surgery on his injured ankle, but did not rule him out for the LSU game. "Cedric did have surgery. It just gave him the opportunity to speed up the recovery process," Heupel said Monday at his weekly press conference. "We'll see where he's at . He was limited but moving around a little bit today. We'll continue to see how it unfolds this week and see where we're at." Last week, Heupel said he was "hopeful" that Tillman would "be available when we go down there" to LSU. On Monday, Heupel put conditions on that availability. "(Tillman) has got to be a functional player and play at the level that we expect him to and what he wants to play at too," Heupel said. Tillman suffered the injury in a win over Akron in Week 3. Without him, the Vols got career-best performances from Bru McCoy and Ramel Keyton in a 38-33 win over Florida. McCoy had 102 yards receiving and one TD. Keyton had 69 yards receiving, including a 43-yard catch in a 99-yard touchdown drive that turned the game. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Tennessee and North Carolina State broke into the top 10 of The Associated Press college football poll Sunday, and Florida State is back in the rankings for the first time in four years. Georgia remained No. 1 and received 55 of 63 first-place votes in the Top 25, presented by Regions Bank. No. 2 Alabama (four first-place votes), No. 3 Ohio State (four first-place votes), No. 4 Michigan and No. 5 Clemson all held their places.

Oklahoma's upset loss to Kansas State created room for teams to move up, like Southern California to No. 6 and Kentucky to No. 7. Tennessee moved up three spots to No. 8, its best ranking since 2006 and first top-10 appearance since a few weeks at ninth in the first half of 2016. That was the last time the Volunteers started 4-0. The Vols knocked Florida out of the rankings by snapping a five-game losing streak in the rivalry. Oklahoma State remained at nine and North Carolina State jumped two spots to No. 10. The Wolfpack have their best ranking since they were 10th in 2002. - AP College Football

Hendon Hooker threw for 348 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 112 yards and a score to lead No. 11 Tennessee to a 38-33 victory over No. 20 Florida Saturday. It was Tennessee's second win over Florida in the last 18 meetings and snapped a six-game losing streak in the series. The win gave the Volunteers their first 4-0 start since 2016. Tennessee (4-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) took control in the fourth quarter when it traveled 87 yards for a TD after a fumble by Gators (2-2, 0-2) quarterback Anthony Richardson.

Richardson had a career-high 453 passing yards and two touchdowns and ran for 62 and two scores in a raucous Neyland Stadium. Tennessee led 17-14 at halftime following a first half loaded with big offensive plays on both sides.
