OCT 14/WEEK 7 SEC CO-OFFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE WEEK: Trey Smith, LG, Tennessee,...Tennessee junior left guard Trey Smith was the highest graded offensive lineman for the Vols and totaled 11 knockdowns in a 20-10 win over Mississippi State...Led by Smith, the Vols totaled 190 yards on the ground and held an impressive 18:57 to 11:03 edge in time of possession in the second half as UT relied on its run game to control the clock...The Vols' 190 rushing yards were the most they have had against a Power 5 opponent this season. - SEC Football

Hendon Hooker threw three touchdown passes and Virginia Tech fought back feisty Rhode Island for a 34-17 victory Saturday. Hooker hit Damon Hazleton from nine and 37 yards in the first half and Dalton Keene from three yards after the Rams pulled to within 17-14 in the third quarter. The Hooker-to-Hazleton connection almost teamed up for a third first-half score, but Hazleton dropped what looked like a sure 71-yard scoring pass before halftime. His scoring toss to Keene was his fourth to the tight end in the past two games.

Virginia Tech (4-2) won its second in a row, but without showing the firepower that marked a 42-35 victory at Miami a week ago in Hooker's first start. The Hokies were stopped on three consecutive runs after having a first down at the Rams' 5 yard-line on their opening possession, having to settle for a field goal, and need a 75-yard scoring drive early in the final quarter to get some insurance points. - Virginia Tech/AP College Football

Tennessee intercepted three passes, shut down Southeastern Conference rushing leader Kylin Hill and withstood an injury to quarterback Brian Maurer in a 20-10 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday. The Volunteers (2-4, 1-2 SEC) snapped a six-game skid against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents that had begun last November. A change in gear helped provide the reversal of fortune, as Tennessee wore orange pants for the first time since a 49-36 victory over Kentucky on Nov. 12, 2016. Jarrett Guarantano replaced an injured Maurer late in the first half and went 6 of 7 for 106 yards, including a game-clinching 39-yard completion to Tyler Byrd with 2:35 left.

After Mississippi State (3-3, 1-2) cut Tennessee's lead to 13-10 on Garrett Shrader's 17-yard touchdown pass to Deddrick Thomas with 8:27 remaining, Tennessee drained much of the clock and eventually scored a touchdown of its own. Byrd caught a Guarantano pass about 2 yards beyond the line of scrimmage, headed to his left and raced down the sideline into the left corner of the end zone for the senior's third career touchdown catch. Tennessee's Tim Jordan added a 15-yard touchdown run and Brent Cimaglia kicked field goals from 49 and 22 yards out. That was more than enough for Tennessee's defense. - Tennessee/AP College Football

Hendon Hooker should have an easier time in his second start at quarterback for Virginia Tech. Hooker threw three touchdown passes without a turnover as the Hokies blew a 28-point lead before regrouping to beat Miami last week. Now comes a visit from Rhode Island of the FCS for a game that should help Hooker grow even more comfortable in the job. - AP College Football

Jeremy Banks has been dismissed from the Tennessee football team after video showed him cursing and saying "where I'm from, we shoot at cops" during his arrest last month following a traffic stop. The linebacker has apologized. Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt said in a statement Friday he decided to “remove” Banks in the best interest of the team and university. During a conference call Wednesday of Southeastern Conference coaches, Pruitt said the team "addressed the matter internally" and Banks' behavior was unacceptable. Banks practiced that day in a workout open to media.

He was arrested Sept. 15 after a records check during a traffic stop just before 4 a.m. revealed he had an active warrant for failure to appear on an earlier charge of driving with a suspended license. Pruitt's decision leaves the Volunteers thin at linebacker after Will Ignont left the team last week. Tennessee (1-3, 0-1 Southeastern Conference) hosts No. 3 Georgia (4-0, 1-0) on Saturday. - AP College Football

Tennessee linebacker Jeremy Banks has issued an apology through the school after video was released showing him cursing and saying that “where I'm from, we shoot at cops” during his arrest last month following a traffic stop. Volunteers coach Jeremy Pruitt said Wednesday at the Southeastern Conference coaches teleconference that the team has “addressed the matter internally.” Pruitt added that “Jeremy's comments and behavior were unacceptable.”

“The one thing that guys need to know is that there's consequences with all actions, and that's something that obviously he's got to learn from,” Pruitt said later Wednesday on his “Vol Calls” radio show. “One thing about it is it's like I told him, this is something that can define the rest of his life, or this is an opportunity for him to use it as a learning lesson to grow and become a better man." Banks participated in the portion of Tennessee's Wednesday practice that was open to the media.   Tennessee cornerback Bryce Thompson has returned to practice less than three weeks after his arrest on a misdemeanor domestic assault charge. When he will start playing again remains uncertain. Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt said Wednesday in a university release that he believes "Bryce can grow by following the plan the university has put in place for him." Thompson practiced with the Vols later in the day.

The statement didn't release any details on the university's plan. University spokeswoman Tyra Haag said that "student privacy laws prohibit us from providing more specific information." "There's still lots of things that have got to go on here with his situation," Pruitt said after Wednesday's practice. "He obviously made a mistake, but he needs to be around the football team. He's not practiced in three weeks, so he needs to practice. It's good for him." Thompson was arrested Aug. 24. Pruitt announced two days later that Thompson was suspended indefinitely. A court hearing is scheduled for Sept. 23. - AP College Football

Tennessee got a major boost on each side of the line of scrimmage just in time for the start of the season. Volunteers coach Jeremy Pruitt announced Wednesday that offensive lineman Trey Smith has gained medical clearance to play this year and that defensive lineman Aubrey Solomon has received an NCAA waiver enabling the Michigan transfer to play for his new team immediately. Both players should be available Saturday when Tennessee hosts Georgia State. Their additions strengthen the offensive and defensive lines, two of Tennessee's greatest concerns heading into the season. Smith is arguably the best overall player on Tennessee's roster, but his career was in jeopardy after blood clots were discovered in his lungs. - AP College Football

Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt suspended Bryce Thompson indefinitely following the cornerback's arrest on a misdemeanor domestic assault charge, issued a statement about student safety and now is letting the legal process play out. "That's all we're going to talk about that for right now," Pruitt said during his scheduled Monday news conference, referring to the statement he had released earlier. "We're going to focus on this game, and for us, that's what we can focus on."

Thompson was arrested Saturday night after his girlfriend told police they began arguing when she found another woman's false eyelashes in the player's room. Thompson is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 3. Pruitt said in his statement that "we hold our students to a high standard" and that "the safety of all students is our first priority here at Tennessee." - AP College Football

Tennessee cornerback Bryce Thompson has been arrested on a domestic assault charge stemming from an argument with his girlfriend. A woman told police the argument began Saturday night after she found another woman's fake eyelashes in Thompson's room. She said the argument began in Thompson's dorm room, moved to a stairwell and continued for 10 to 20 minutes. Thompson and the woman said they had been dating for four years. Witnesses told police they heard Thompson threatening to slap a woman. One witness said he heard Thompson yelling that he would "shoot up the school."

Another witness told police he also heard a man yelling about plans to "shoot up the school" but said he couldn't see who was making that comment because his view was blocked. Police say Thompson acknowledged arguing with the woman but denied making physical contact with her or issuing any threats. The woman told police she couldn't remember "the entirety of what had occurred" during the argument "as it was a stressful, volatile situation." She said Thompson has a bad temper and had punched walls during previous arguments. - AP College Football

Tennessee outside linebacker Darrell Taylor is coming off a breakthrough season but believes he's capable of doing even better. Taylor recorded eight sacks last season, the most of any Southeastern Conference player who returns this year. Taylor says he can improve upon those numbers if he gains the consistency that has been missing from his game up to his point. "The goal is definitely to exceed that," Taylor said. Taylor has shown he can deliver against quality opponents. Seven of his eight sacks last year came against Georgia and Kentucky , which both finished the season ranked 12th or higher.

The problem is that Taylor recorded a total of one sack in Tennessee's other 10 games. Taylor's coaches have preached the importance of producing a quality pass rush each week. "He has to bring it," co-defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach Chris Rumph said. "He's the face of the program, the defense right now. We're expecting a lot of things out of him." Taylor's inconsistency last year may explain his relative lack of preseason acclaim. - AP College Football
