  01/13/21 - Josh BlackrSr/2022, Syracuse, 6-3, 284 (DS#86 DT) + More +

Josh Black had three factors in mind when he decided to return for a sixth and final season with Syracuse next fall. The defensive lineman was undecided on his future plans toward the end of last season. He didn't think he was ready to take his NFL shot. He didn't want to regret passing on another year of free education. Those two factors tilted the scales: "It was no-brainer for me." The third was getting a redo after a 1-10 season, a chance to end his college career on a better note. Black recently expanded on his reasoning for returning to Syracuse on a podcast with his hometown paper in Illinois. "Ending on that 1-10 note just didn't sit right with me," Black said on "Not Just a Game," a weekly sports podcast from The Rockford Register Star. "I really need to end on a winning note to kind of complete my career here at Syracuse. "I feel like it's my duty to help them out." - The Post-Standard

2020 ACC JIM TATUM AWARD WINNER: Syracuse senior defensive end Kingsley Jonathan has been named the recipient of the 2020 Jim Tatum Award, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced. The award is given annually in memory of the late Jim Tatum to the top senior student-athlete among the league's football players. Tatum, a two-time ACC Coach of the Year, coached in the 1950s at both Maryland and North Carolina and believed strongly in the concept of the student-athlete. Jonathan has compiled a career 3.729 GPA while majoring in information studies. The Baltimore senior is a three-time ACC All-Academic Team member and a three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll selection.

A semifinalist for the 2020 Campbell Trophy and Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year award, Jonathan represents Syracuse on the ACC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and has posted a GPA of at least 3.5 every semester of his college academic career.   12/21/20 - Garrett ShraderrSr/2024, Syracuse, 6-5, 231 (DS#19 QB) + More +

Garrett Shrader is headed north. The former Mississippi State quarterback known for his long beard and gritty style of play announced via Twitter on Saturday that he has committed to Syracuse. Shrader entered the transfer portal in October. Mike Leach and his staff at State transitioned Shrader from quarterback to wide receiver in training camp. Shrader recorded one reception for eight yards against Arkansas. Shrader was viewed by many as Mississippi State's quarterback of the future. He started a handful of games as a true freshman in 2019. He completed 88 of 153 (57.5%) passes for 1,170 yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions. - The Clarion Ledger

  12/21/20 - *Ifeatu MelifonwurJr/2021, Syracuse, 6-3, 205 (DS#12 CB) + More +

Melifonwu, a redshirt junior, is the third defensive back from this year's Syracuse team who will enter the NFL Draft early, joining Andre Cisco and Trill Williams. While the others left the team during the middle of the season after suffering injuries, Melifonwu was a bright spot for Syracuse throughout a difficult year. He finished the season with nine pass break-ups, second on the team to Garrett Williams (10), along with 55 tackles, one interception and three tackles for loss. In addition to a successful college performance, Melifonwu has excellent size. Syracuse listed him as 6-foot-3 and 213 pounds.

If Melifonwu had chosen to return to Syracuse next year, he would have been expected to pair with Williams, a redshirt freshman, to form an excellent pair of cornerbacks. Now the Orange will need to find someone to fill the vacancy across from Williams. One of Syracuse's top recruits, Duce Chestnut, will join a number of returners, none of whom have proven themselves on the field yet, as potential options at the position. The ability to complete for a starting job, and Syracuse's success with this year's crop of defensive backs, could also make it an attractive destination for a transfer. - The Post-Standard

  12/11/20 - Airon ServaisrSr/2022, Syracuse, 6-6, 307 (DS#23 C) + More +

The decisions made by the linemen should be helpful for a Syracuse program that finished 1-10 this year, enduring one of the worst seasons in program history. The defensive line was full of veterans this year and faces a significant reload if some of the seniors don't return, while the offensive line was the team's weakest link for the second consecutive season, contributing to Syracuse owning one of the worst offenses in the country. Servais referenced the difficulties of the season in his announcement. "After many discussions with family, friends and coaches, I have decided to use the extra year of eligibility and return to Syracuse to finish my college career" Servais wrote. "This season left much to be desired and I'm more motivated than ever to push myself and my teammates to be better."

Servais entered the season as one of SU's more established names, with 37 consecutive starts and some preseason All-ACC mentions, but he never looked as comfortable as previous seasons, shifting from left tackle to right tackle during the year. Servais' return was considered especially questionable because he had spent five years in college already and was one of five seniors who took a lap around the Carrier Dome on the team's Senior Day. - The Post-Standard

  12/11/20 - Josh BlackrSr/2022, Syracuse, 6-3, 284 (DS#86 DT) + More +

Defensive lineman Josh Black will take advantage of a new, one-time rule by the NCAA and return to Syracuse for a sixth year of college football. Black can play the 2021 season because the NCAA granted leniency for fall athletes, giving them an additional year of eligibility given the disruption caused by the novel coronavirus pandemic this past year. He announced Tuesday morning on Twitter he's taking it and that he'll do so at Syracuse. "I have been through everything here with Coach Babers and the crew, and my journey at Syracuse is not over just yet," Black wrote. "It is my duty to lead and get Syracuse back on track. I wouldn't trade this team for the world, and we will be better. Thanks for all the endless support. I'm orange for life." - The Post-Standard

  12/10/20 - Airon ServaisrSr/2022, Syracuse, 6-6, 307 (DS#23 C) + More +

Syracuse offensive tackle Airon Servais said he intends to play football for the Orange next year, potentially allowing the team to bring back its entire offensive line. The NCAA allowed players who competed this year an extra year of eligibility because of the difficulties playing through the coronavirus pandemic. Seniors will not count against the scholarship limit for schools next year. Servais announced on Twitter that he would take advantage of the opportunity to return for an extra season. He became the second important player on Syracuse to make that choice in recent days. Defensive end Josh Black announced he'd do the same thing on Tuesday, while tight end Aaron Hackett has chosen not to return. Syracuse has eight other seniors who must make similar decisions. - Syracuse Football

  12/10/20 - Josh BlackrSr/2022, Syracuse, 6-3, 284 (DS#86 DT) + More +

The Orange senior put an end to any speculation by announcing that he'd intend to take advantage of the NCAA offered extra season of eligibility to fall sport athletes due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, and return to Syracuse for another season. He'll enter the 2021 campaign with 48 games played, 120 tackles, 18.0 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and an interception. He started every game of the past-two seasons for the Orange, and his return provides veteran presence to a defense otherwise littered with youth. Syracuse started six freshmen in each of its last two games of the season, with Black being one-of-three seniors on the unit. - Syracuse Football
