  SEPT 19 WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Zach Strand, Sr., DL, Southern Utah (Sept. 19),...Strand, a senior defensive lineman transfer from Frostburg State, made his presence felt late in the second half of a 17-10 win for Southern Utah at Western Illinois on Sept. 17. Strand finished the game with six total tackles, 1.5 sacks and gathered in a key fumble recovery for the Thunderbirds to hold Western Illinois at bay in the red zone. Strand, who previously completed at the NCAA Division II and Division III levels while playing for Frostburg State, is believed to be the first player to register at least one sack in all three major divisions of college football. - WAC Football

  SEPT 5 WAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Justin Miller, R-Jr., QB, Southern Utah (Sept. 5),...Miller, a redshirt junior quarterback, was an offensive force for Southern Utah in a 44-13 rout of St. Thomas (Minn.) to open the season on Sept. 1. Miller completed 23-of-35 (65.7 percent) of his passes for 364 yards and three touchdowns with no turnovers for the Thunderbirds. Miller finished the first half an impressive 14-of-20 for 246 yards and added a 64-yard touchdown through the air to open a 20-7 halftime lead for Southern Utah. - WAC Football

  SEPT 26 FEDEX GROUND FCS NATIONAL TEAM OF THE WEEK: Southern Utah (31-17 win over Utah Tech),...With a 3-1 start under first-year coach DeLane Fitzgerald, the Thunderbirds have surpassed the win total of their last two seasons combined. The new WAC member never trailed in their first conference game, with quarterback Justin Miller completing 29 of 37 passes for 352 yards and two touchdowns, and safety Rodrick Ward collecting six tackles, two interceptions and two pass breakups. Honorable Mention: Richmond (51-7 over Stony Brook); Sacramento State (41-10 win at Colorado State); Sacred Heart (38-31 OT win over Dartmouth); Southeastern Louisiana (41-35 win over then-No. 4 UIW). - STATS FCS Football

  Bronson Barron threw three touchdown passes and Weber State defeated Portland State 42-7 on Saturday for the Wildcats' eighth straight win. The Wildcats' previous loss came to Portland State last season. The win Saturday was the Weber State's eighth consecutive road victory which came in Jay Hill's 100th game as the Wildcats' coach. Portland State avoided a shutout with Dante Chachere's 12-yard touchdown pass to Mataio Talalemotu with 6:18 to go. Those were the first points Weber State (6-0, 3-0 Big Sky Conference), ranked sixth in the FCS coaches poll, has given up in the fourth quarter this season. Barron threw scoring passes to Haze Hadley, Hayden Meacham and a 55-yarder to Jacob Sharp. Dontae McMillan, Damon Bankston and Steven Shoats-Thomas added rushing touchdowns. Brown threw for 274 yards and was intercepted once. Chachere threw for 167 yards with an interception for the Vikings (2-4, 1-2). Weber State outgained Portland State 553-236. - AP College Football

  SEPT 19 BIG SKY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Bronson Barron (Weber State),...Weber State's Bronson Barron was named the Big Sky Football Offensive Player of the Week after passing for a career-high 368 yards and four touchdowns in a 44-14 victory over Utah Tech. The four-touchdown game was the second of Barron's career, as he had scores of 13, 35, 36 and 17 yards in the win. Barron also became the 17th player in WSU history to reach 3,000 career passing yards after racking up 368 yards on Saturday.   Bronson Barron completed 20 of 30 passes for 201 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown pass to Josh Davis, and Davis added 100 yards rushing on 20 carries to help Weber State beat UC Davis 17-12 Saturday night. Weber State lost a fumble on the first play from scrimmage and Isaiah Gomez kicked a 35-yard field goal for UC Davis to open the scoring about 90 seconds into the game. On third-and-4, Davis caught a pass from Barron for a 16-yard touchdown late in the first quarter and Dontae McMillan capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive with a 6-yard TD run to make it 14-3 with 13:46 to play in the first half.

Gomez, who missed kicks from 50, 50 and 18 yards, made a 41-yard field goal midway though the second quarter, Kyle Thompson kick a 23-yarder for Weber State with 9:21 left in the game that gave the Wildcats a 17-6 lead. C.J. Hutton, who finished with 10 receptions for 77 yards for UC Davis (1-3, 0-1), caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Miles Hastings to cap the scoring with 5:33 to go. Ulonzo Gilliam Jr. - who went into the game as the active leader in the FCS with 3,689 yards rushing, 40 rushing TDs - had 17 carries for 111 yards for the Aggies.   Justin Miller completed 29 of 37 passes for 352 and two touchdowns, Elijah Burns and Bobby Cole each ran for a TD and Southern Utah beat Utah Tech 31-17 Saturday night. Utah Tech (1-3, 0-1 Western Athletic Conference) failed to convert a fourth-and-7 play from the SUU 35 and, on the next play, Justin Miller hit Isaiah Wooden down the left sideline for a 65-yard catch-and-run touchdown to make it 14-7 with 11:56 left in the first half and Southern Utah led the rest of the way. Miller went 4 for 4 on third downs - hitting four different targets for first downs - on a 16-play, 82-yard drive that culminated when Ethan Bolingbroke caught a 3-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds left in the second quarter and make it 24-10. Kobe Tracy was 19-of-36 passing for 277 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions for Utah Tech (formerly known as Dixie State). - AP College Football

  Justin Miller hit Isaiah Wooden with a 73-yard touchdown pass with 33 seconds remaining to give Southern Utah a 17-10 win on Saturday over Western Illinois. Western Illinois had tied the game 21 seconds earlier. Miller found Wooden wide open deep down the left side for the game-winner. The Leathernecks (0-3) had tied the game on Clay Bruno's 5-yard keeper after driving WIU 73 yards. The Thunderbirds (2-1) had six takeaways with four interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Southern Utah took advantage of a short field to score first on Micah Pettit's 27-yard field goal. The Thunderbirds made it 10-0 in the final minute of the first quarter after Julian Sanderlin's fumble recovery led to Elijah Burns' 5-yard touchdown two plays later. Miller was 20-of-33 passing with 194 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Bruno had 219 passing yards and 70 rushing but threw three of the picks.   Bronson Barron threw a pair of touchdowns - both to Ty MacPherson - and FCS-level Weber State walloped FBS-member Utah State 35-7 on Saturday. Barron threw for 202 yards and was intercepted three times. The Wildcats' defense, however, made up for the turnovers securing four interceptions with three coming on Aggies' quarterback Logan Bonner and one of backup Cooper Legas. Desmond Wilson's 33-yard pick-6 gave Weber State (2-0) a 28-7 lead with 2:43 left in the third quarter. The Wildcats took a 21-7 advantage on the prior drive when Barron threw a 9-yard touchdown to MacPherson completing an 18-play, 86-yard drive that lasted 9 1/2 minutes. The Aggies only score and lead came after Terrell Vaughn's 100-yard kickoff return following a Weber State field near the end of the first. Cade Sexauer threw for 207 yards and a touchdown and interception while Hope Adebayo ran for 73 yards on seven carries for St. Thomas. The debut win for head coach DeLane Fitzgerald ended an eight-game losing streak for Southern Utah. The team hadn't won since defeating Tarleton, 40-35 on Sept. 18, 2020. It was the Thunderbirds' first season-opening win since 2013 when they beat South Alabama 22-21. The Tommies, who made their first trip to Utah, are in their second season as a Division I program.   2022 PRESEASON ALL-WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE FOOTBALL TEAM (COACHES): DL Francis Bemiy, Gr., Southern Utah,...Bemiy has had a phenomenal career for the Thunderbirds thus far, earning All-Big Sky First Team honors in the 2020-2021 season and Third Team All-Conference honors this past year. Bemiy has compiled eight total sacks and 18 tackles for loss over the past two seasons. He had a career-high 11 tackles in a victory over Tarleton State last year. In four seasons with the Thunderbirds, Bemiy has appeared in 38 games, amassing 137 tackles, 25.5 tackles for loss, and 10 sacks. He will look to build upon a strong offseason and add to those numbers this Fall as Southern Utah prepares for its first season as a member of the Western Athletic Conference. - Southern Utah Football
