  Granson eventually spent a year as a walk-on while redshirting at SMU and developed into one of the most reliable pass-catchers the Mustangs had the past two years. He's totaled 14 touchdowns and 1,257 yards worth of catches, and has even ran the ball three times. The opportunity at SMU came seemingly out of nowhere - the luck of one pickup truck in just the right spot. And two weeks ago, Granson got another opportunity, again totally unexpected. Dykes called Granson into his office to congratulate him. He'd been invited to the Senior Bowl - the top showcase game for NFL draft prospects.

Granson, with his speed and size, knew that there would be some pro interest. But at the time, he didn't know just how important a Senior Bowl invitation was. He didn't know if he'd be retuning to SMU - a possibility afforded to him by the NCAA granting an extra year of eligibility in 2020. In that brief conversation in Dykes' office, he realized just how legitimate his NFL chances were. His future was about to start very quickly. "I wanted him to return," David Granson said of his mindset before the Senior Bowl invite. "He hasn't played a lot of football. Even to this point, he hasn't played a lot of football. "But then when all these things started happening, it only made sense if there's people out there that think you can do this at the next level - and possibly get drafted to do it at the next level - then you've got to try to go figure that out." - Dallas Morning News

  A former Alabama tight end is back in the NCAA transfer portal. Kedrick James, who transferred from Alabama to SMU last year, re-entered the transfer portal Wednesday, AL.com has learned. James had to sit out last year due to NCAA transfer rules and it was reported during the summer that he was no longer a member of the SMU program. A former four-star recruit, James was part of Alabama's 2017 recruiting class and had a 29-yard touchdown catch-and-run during the Tide's 2019 spring game. - Birmingham News

  Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley doesn't have any hard feelings toward his former tight end, who will soon play for Auburn. Former Sooner standout Grant Calcaterra announced he'll be transferring to the SEC program a year after he medically retired from football due to his history with concussions. Calcaterra decided in August to resume his playing career and entered the NCAA transfer portal, leading him to the Tigers. "That's not really a surprise knowing him, the type of competitor he is and player he is," Riley said. "He had some great moments here, some great moments. Was a big-time player for us and will be, in some ways, hard seeing him play in another jersey."

Calcaterra finished his OU career with 637 yards receiving and nine touchdowns. He averaged 15.5 yards a catch, hauling in 41 passes over 33 games. Riley confirmed Calcaterra discussed his football future at OU after choosing to come out of retirement from the sport but didn't disclose any details to those conversations. "I'm not going to get too far into them," Riley said. "but I am excited that he's found an opportunity to go play at Auburn. He's one of those guys you want nothing but the best for that kid and he clearly wants to play again." - Norman Transcript

  Grant Calcaterra's football career will continue, just not with Oklahoma. Nearly a year to the day after the tight end medically retired from football due to multiple concussions, Calcaterra announced he will be transferring to Auburn. "A year ago, I would've never pictured my life the way is it now," wrote Calcaterra, who announced his intentions to enter the NCAA transfer portal on Aug. 15, in a tweet. "I don't believe in bad situations, just opportunities for growth. I'm more than grateful for this past year, but even more excited for my future challenges. Thanks again Sooner Nation. #WarEagle."   Auburn has emerged as a potential landing spot for a former All-Big 12 tight end. Sources have told AL.com that the Tigers are in the mix with ex-Oklahoma tight end Grant Calcaterra, who retired last year after multiple concussions but announced in August that he plans to return to football.   Shane Buechele threw four touchdown passes, two to Tyler Page, and No. 18 SMU broke away from undermanned Temple 47-23 Saturday. The game was pushed back from its original Thursday date while Temple dealt with virus-related issues. The Owls were missing 15 players who were in COVID-19 protocol. SMU led 20-16 before Buechele connected with Kylen Granson on a 24-yard TD pass on the first play of the fourth quarter. The Mustangs (7-1, 4-1 American Athletic Conference) scored four touchdowns in the first 7 1/2 minutes of the period. Temple (1-4, 1-4) scored on the first play of the game, with wide receiver Randle Jones going 75 yards on a screen pass from Trad Beatty. Page, who came into the game fifth on the Mustangs this year in yards receiving, caught nine passes for 131 yards.

Playing in the slot most of the game, Page took advantage of a soft middle of the Temple defense and then used his speed to rack up most of his yards after making the catch. Buechele was 24 for 35 for 355 yards. Tayvon Ruley's 3-yard touchdown run helped Temple build a 13-10 halftime lead. Buechele put SMU ahead for good when he found Page with a 44-yard strike on the first drive of the second half. In the fourth quarter, Buechele added a 33-yard TD toss to Rashee Rice while Tyler Lavine had a 2-yard touchdown plunge and TaMerik Williams added a 49-yard scoring scamper. - AP College Football

  Then-backup SMU quarterback Terrance Gipson came into spell Shane Buechele on Saturday with the Mustangs up by 34 points in the fourth quarter. But on the third play of Gipson's night, he fumbled the ball away. And the next drive, Buechele was back in the game. This decision, Gipson told The Dallas Morning News was indicative of why he felt he needed to enter the transfer portal. Gipson officially put his name on Monday. "The head man just didn't have faith in my play," Gipson said of head coach Sonny Dykes. He said it was shown in the decision to take him out on Saturday, but it wasn't the only reason.

"That's not certainly like, just because he took me out," Gipson said regarding his decision to transfer. "If I am in a game, and I'm messing up, I would preach for them to take me out...It's not just because of that. It's been a long process and a long set of things that led up to that." Dykes declined through a team spokesman to respond to Gipson's comments, but he addressed the QB's transfer earlier in Monday afternoon during his weekly media availability. "I'm supportive of him and wish him the best," Dykes said. "And I hope he finds what he's looking for.
