ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 56. Travis Dye, RB, USC, Senior. Notable 2021 stats: 1,271 yards, 16 TDs. Last year's ranking: NR. Through injuries and inconsistent quarterback play, Dye was Oregon's metronome last season. Now at USC this year, Dye will be an ideal No. 1 back as a runner and a pass-catcher. And though he's a classic example of substance over flash, it feels like there's a more explosive version of him that could be unlocked by playing in a Lincoln Riley offense next to Caleb Williams. - ESPN.com

The NCAA Division I Board of Directors on Wednesday approved the implementation of set time periods when athletes can enter the transfer portal and immediately be eligible to compete at their new schools, along with reforms to the enforcement process. The proposed changes came from the Transformation Committee as part of the first phase of that group's work. The changes to transfer rules will go into effect immediately. Sport-specific windows will be set during an academic year when athletes would be required to enter their names in the transfer portal to be eligible immediately to compete the following school year. Athletes in winter sports would be required to provide written notification of transfer within 60 days following the NCAA championship selections in their sport. For spring sports, the transfer windows will be Dec. 1-15 plus a 45-day period beginning the day after championship selections are made. In fall sports, including football, the first window will begin the day following championship selection and last 45 days. The second would be from May 1-15. - AP College Football

An Associated Press third-team All-American last season, this is the sixth straight season Vorhees has entered with a role for the Trojans (he received a medical redshirt for the 2019 season). With 44 appearances, he's one of the most experienced players in college football and will play a key role on the offensive line for USC. - ESPN.com

2022 COLLEGE FOOTBALL'S TOP STAR DUOS/TRIOS: USC got two of the nation's top transfer pickups in quarterback Caleb Williams (Oklahoma) and Biletnikoff-winning wide receiver Jordan Addison (Pittsburgh). Williams' 1,670 passing yards and 18 touchdowns were the most ever by a Sooners true freshman. He can run, too. Mario Williams, who flashed pleny of potential as an Oklahoma freshman, also transferred in. The two former Sooners, of course, are joining their former coach, Lincoln Riley, in Los Angeles. - AP College Football

2022 PRESEASON ALLSTATE AFCA GOOD WORKS TEAM NOMINEE: Caleb Williams, USC,...Williams, who enrolled at Oklahoma in the spring of 2021 after graduating a semester early from high school, emerged as the Sooners' starting quarterback by mid-season and proved to be one of the nation's premier freshmen in 2021. Overall in 2021 while appearing in 11 games (all but West Virginia and Nebraska) and starting the last 7 contests (TCU, Kansas, Texas Tech, Baylor, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Oregon), he completed 136-of-211 passes (64.5%) for 1,912 yards and 21 TDs with 4 interceptions and he ran for 442 yards on 79 carries (5.6 avg) with 6 TDs. - USC Football

A foot injury will sideline expected starter Jude Wolfe for at least half the season, leaving USC with a gaping hole at H-back, a position that's been crucial to past iterations of Riley's offense. Into that void steps Lake McRee, a redshirt freshman who came on strong at the end of last season. Riley has used many different types of H-backs over the years - and found success with pretty much every kind. McRee, assuming he holds onto the job, will presumably be more of a flex receiving threat. The only other healthy scholarship tight end in camp is senior Malcolm Epps, who's likely to play more of a traditional, inline tight end role. - Los Angeles Times

2022 PRESEASON WUERFFEL TROPHY (COMMUNITY SERVICE) WATCHLIST: MarShawn Lloyd, South Carolina, So., RB,...Lloyd, a 5-9, 212-pound redshirt sophomore from Wilmington, Del., got his first taste of college football in 2021 after sitting out the 2020 season with a torn ACL. He appeared in all 12 regular season games last fall, rushing 64 times for 228 yards. Off the field, he was a member of the 2021 SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll and has a heart for serving others in the community. - South Carolina Football

USC linebacker Eric Gentry has yet to speak with the media this fall camp, but his teammates and coaches can't say enough about him. The sophomore transferred from Arizona State to USC in the spring and has been transitioning seamlessly and learning quickly. "The amount of ball he's been able to digest so far has been pretty impressive," inside linebackers coach Brian Odom said. "When he can get on the same page as the other guys - he's improving every day - I'm excited about his future." Odom said the coaching staff has been giving him a lot of repetitions to help him learn quickly and see what he's physically capable of.

Even when running gassers at the end of a hot, two-hour practice, Gentry gallops to the front of the pack with energy and a competitive drive. "It's really deceptive," Odom said. "He's really quick and has tremendous balance for his length. You don't see a lot of guys like that with his proportions." Gentry's athleticism is paired with a 6-foot-6, 200-pound frame. At first glance, he seems wiry, but in action, he uses his long limbs to increase his coverage area. At ASU, he was an early enrollee and became a freshman All-American after ranking sixth on the team in tackles (45). Although he has yet to show what he can do in a game with the Trojans, he did grab an interception during the fall camp scrimmage. "With the plays, he's been catching on," linebacker Raesjon Davis said. "He's always learning. That's been a main thing because he got here later than everyone else. So him getting the playbook was a big thing." - Orange County Register

Overall in 2021 while starting all 12 games, he had 48 tackles, including 7.5 for losses of 42 yards (with a team-high 5.5 sacks for 39 yards), plus 2 deflections, 1 fumble recovery for a TD and 2 forced fumbles. - USC Football

Addison is now about two weeks into official practices with USC after his late-spring transfer from Pitt. After several practices and a few scrimmages, the Biletnikoff Award winner is feeling comfortable in his new offense. "I feel like I've picked it up pretty quickly, just coming in in the offseason every day with Coach (Dennis) Simmons and just learning certain routes, backside what I gotta do, the different hand signals, tempos," Addison said. "You gotta have high energy; it's a fast-paced offense, a lot of tempo. And you just gotta stay locked in every play." Addison admitted he still had more to learn, but quarterback Caleb Williams has helped alongside the coaching staff in bringing Addison along in the offense. The new QB-WR combination is also developing chemistry together in 11-on-11 after some offseason workouts. "His mindset and everything has been really good and him teaching me what I gotta do throughout certain routes," Addison said. "So I think our connection and our communication is getting better every day." - Orange County Register

Wildcats coach Jedd Fisch said he expects defensive starters Kyon Barrs (foot) and Treydan Stukes (lower body) to be ready for the Sept. 3 opener at San Diego State. Barrs' snaps are being limited as he recovers from surgery; he did not participate in the scrimmage. Stukes has been out since Monday. "Right now I feel pretty confident that Stukes and Barrs are right on schedule to be able to play Sept. 3," Fisch said. "How long it takes between now and Sept. 3 will be a day-to-day situation." - Arizona Star News

With USC training camp entering its second week, here's a look at seven breakout candidates for the 2022 season. Brenden Rice, WR,...The son of Jerry Rice never got much of a chance to produce at Colorado, gaining 419 yards and five touchdowns in two years. Now at USC, the 6-foot-3 wideout should have a chance to be a dangerous jump-ball threat for Caleb Williams and give USC the reliable big body that the Trojans missed after Drake London's injury last season. - Orange County Register

He returned last year. MarShawn Lloyd played in 12 games during South Carolina's 2021 season, his debut in college football after missing all of his true freshman year while recovering from a torn ACL. Why is this even a question? Lloyd was hurt, came back, played, end of story. Except he was wondering. Am I OK? Am I fully back? Do I want this badly enough? He couldn't definitively say no, but he wasn't risking a neck sprain while furiously nodding yes. The best Lloyd could figure it, he was lying to himself. "I feel like playing this game, you need confidence. You don't want to have to think about. On top of football with the plays, I was thinking about, "Can I do this?," Lloyd said. "That's a big no if you're playing a physical sport like this." >He was cleared medically, he passed every test.

But his situation was like that of the man he's most often compared to. Marcus Lattimore was at his physical peak when trying to recover from the devastating knee injury that ended his junior season at USC and led him to declare for the NFL, trying to salvage whatever was left of his career. He was in tip-top shape with the San Francisco 49ers, his knee was reconstructed, he was ready to play. Yet he knew what nobody else did. Lattimore just didn't feel right. The effort and desire to get back from the injury had clearly been proven. But whenever out there on the field, Lattimore simply didn't feel like he did before the injury. - The Post and Courier
