2022 BRONKO NAGURSKI TROPHY FINALIST: Tuli Tuipulotu, DE, USC (6-4, 290, Jr., Hawthorne, Calif.): Tuipulotu is the nation's second-leading sack man with 11.5 on the season (1.15 per game). He is also the Pac-12 leader and is fourth nationally with 1.8 tackles for loss per game (17.5 total). Those combine for 167 yards lost to opposing offenses. Tuipulotu's 11.5 sacks are the most in a single season at USC since Kenechi Udeze set the Trojans' record with 16.5 in 2003. Tuipulotu - pronounced TOO-ee-poo-LOE-too - is sixth on the team with 32 tackles, 23 of them solo. He has three pass breakups at the line, two quarterback hurries - one of which turned into an intentional grounding penalty for a safety against Colorado - and has forced two fumbles. Tuipulotu is USC's second Bronko Nagurski finalist and first in 14 seasons. The other came in 2008 and linebacker Rey Maualuga. As of today's announcement, Tuipulotu is USC's first FWAA All-American on defense since 2014 when defensive lineman Leonard Williams made the second team. - Football Writers Association of America

Caleb Williams passed for 268 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for two more scores, and No. 8 Southern California overcame an apparently serious injury to top running back Travis Dye in a 55-17 victory over Colorado on Friday night. Williams accounted for five total touchdowns in his fourth consecutive outstanding game for the Trojans (9-1, 7-1 Pac-12), who warmed up for season-defining games against No. 9 UCLA and No. 20 Notre Dame in the next two weeks with a slow start followed by a blowout victory over the Buffaloes (1-9, 1-6).

Former Colorado receiver Brenden Rice had 70 yards receiving and a touchdown for the Trojans, while Tahj Washington and Austin Jones caught TD passes from Williams in the third quarter. Jones threw up a 2 and a 6 after his score to honor the jersey number of Dye, the Pac-12's second-leading rusher with 884 yards. Dye left the field on a cart with an air cast on his left leg after getting tackled awkwardly in the second quarter. The Oregon transfer and Los Angeles-area native has been a key component of the Trojans' immediate transformation from a four-win program to a College Football Playoff contender. - USC/AP College Football

Southern California running back Travis Dye has been taken from the Coliseum field on a cart after injuring his left leg during the No. 8 Trojans' game against Colorado on Friday night. Dye grabbed his left leg immediately after getting tackled awkwardly in the second quarter. He stayed down for several minutes while an air cast was affixed to his leg, and the entire USC sideline came out to gather around the cart before it left the field. Dye has been the heart of USC's ground game in his first season at the school, playing a major role in its transformation from a four-win program last year into a College Football Playoff contender. He is the Pac-12's second-leading rusher with 884 yards, and he had scored a touchdown in each of the Trojans' previous eight games. Dye is a Southern California native who left Oregon to play closer to home this season after a four-year career with the Ducks. USC scored shortly after Dye's injury on a 32-yard TD pass from Caleb Williams to Brenden Rice. The Trojans led 23-3. - AP College Football

Southern California's defense gave up 28 points and 290 yards in the second half. The Trojans' special teams botched an extra point and then got bamboozled on an onside kick while California transformed a near-blowout into a near-thriller. Despite every mistake by his USC teammates, Caleb Williams simply wouldn't allow them to lose. Williams passed for 360 yards, rushed for a touchdown and threw two of his four scoring passes to Michael Jackson III, leading No. 9 USC to a 41-35 victory over Cal on Saturday night.

Williams capped his latest standout effort by rushing 15 yards up the middle on a keeper for the decisive first down with 2:11 to play, using up Cal's final timeout and keeping all of the Trojans' season goals achievable. "We didn't play our best on really any of the sides (of the ball)," USC coach Lincoln Riley said. "Didn't have a very good first half offensively. Did not finish the game well defensively. Made some big special teams plays, but also gave up a few. Obviously a lot to improve on. We know we're going to have to improve, but if you can improve by winning, you're going to be there in the end." Tahj Washington caught seven passes for 112 yards and a touchdown for the Trojans (8-1, 6-1 Pac-12), whose defense was shredded in the second half of a third straight subpar outing. But Williams went 26 for 41 without a turnover and coolly kept the Trojans ahead in the fourth quarter of his second straight outstanding performance without his top two receivers, injured Jordan Addison and Mario Williams. - USC/AP College Football

A year ago, Auburn had a 28-3 lead in the first half against Mississippi State only to see the Bulldogs make a stunning comeback. Saturday's rematch was playing out the same way in reverse. Mississippi State built a 24-3 lead in the first half but the Bulldog offense stalled for about two and a half quarters and Auburn had two different leads in the final 5 minutes. Ultimately, the Bulldogs sent the game to overtime on a Massimo Biscardi 44-yard field goal and a 6-yard Jo'Quavious Marks touchdown run walked off the win, 39-33. "It was good at the end and good at the beginning. The defense, I thought, kept us in it," Mike Leach said. "Wins are hard no matter who you are and sometimes there are games like that. The toughest teams stick through it, battles and wins." The Bulldogs (6-3, 3-3 Southeastern Conference) blew a 24-3 lead and watched as the Tigers (3-6, 1-5) outscored them 27-9 in the second half.

But Mississippi State wound up handing Auburn its fifth consecutive loss, this time under interim coach and former Tigers running back Carnell Williams. The Tigers fired coach Bryan Harsin on Monday, the same day that MSU athletic director John Cohen left his alma mater to run Auburn's department. "I tip my hat to Mississippi State. Wow, what a game. Those kids fought hard," Williams said. "You're not going to win them all, but I'm so proud of my guys. There are so many life lessons that these kids are going to learn." Auburn's Anders Carlson pushed a 38-yard field goal attempt wide right to start overtime. Then the Bulldogs capitalized on freshman J.D. Rhym's pass interference on a deep ball to set up Marks' winning score. Will Rogers broke Dak Prescott's Bulldogs career passing yards and touchdowns records in the first quarter. But the Bulldogs' offense was stuck in neutral for most of the rest of the ball game - until it mattered most. State built a 24-3 lead in the first half only to see the Tigers work their way back into the game in the third quarter with 13 points thanks to a dropped snap on a punt and an interception from Rogers that closed the gap to 24-19. - Mississippi State/AP College Football

Williams completed passes to 10 different Trojan receivers in the victory. With the victory, USC improved to 7-1, 5-1 in the Pac-12.   Caleb Williams threw for 411 yards and five touchdowns, and No. 10 Southern California scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to outlast Arizona 45-37 on Saturday night. The Trojans (7-1, 5-1 Pac-12) had an extra week to shake off their first loss of the season, an emotional 43-42 setback at No. 14 Utah. USC fought off some early missed opportunities - one caused by the officials - against Arizona, racking up 621 total yards to match its best start since 2008. The Trojans have won 10 straight against Arizona. The Wildcats (3-5, 1-4) nearly kept up with USC offensively, finishing with 543 total yards. Defensively, they struggled with missed tackles and allowed USC to convert 11 of 17 on third down. Jayden de Laura threw for 380 yards and three touchdowns to Dorian Singer, the last a 5-yarder that cut USC's lead to 45-37 with 1:26 left. USC recovered the onside kick to seal the victory. Arizona kept it close most of the night.

Singer had a spectacular 23-yard touchdown catch from de Laura, fending off a defender to snare it one-handed, and Tyler Loop kicked two field goals. Williams had a pair of first-half touchdown passes, but the Trojans also missed on some good scoring opportunities. USC settled for a field goal on its first drive and Denis Lynch missed badly on a 56-yard attempt after Williams' 30-yd TD pass to Terrell Bynum was called back by a holding penalty. USC appeared to be in good position for more points just before halftime when Williams hit Rice on a 33-yard pass to Arizona's 10. Instead, the officials started the clock before spotting the ball and Williams couldn't spike it before time ran out, leaving USC coach Lincoln Riley incensed. Williams found Tahj Washington on a 3-yard touchdown to open the third quarter, then found him again on a 47-yard score as he was being hit to put USC up 31-16. Arizona rallied, closing to 31-29 on de Laura's 19-yard TD pass and Michael Wiley's 10-yard TD run on an option. USC finally stretched the lead after that. Williams hit Kyle Ford on a 5-yard touchdown to open the fourth quarter and Travis Dye leaped in for a 2-yard TD run to make it 45-29. - USC/AP College Football

USC coach Lincoln Riley said Tuesday that injured star wide receiver Jordan Addison will be "day-to-day." He added that is "probably fortunate" that the Trojans have bye this week. In a 43-42 loss at Utah, Addison was injured on the final USC drive of the third quarter. He was tackled awkwardly on the USC sideline after taking a backward pass 10 yards. He stayed down, grabbing his knee, while his teammates quickly moved away from him. Addison was able to eventually get up and walk to the medical tent under his own power. He finished the game on crutches along the USC sideline.

The USC offense struggled to pass the ball in the immediate aftermath of Addison's injury. He'd just caught a 14-yard pass to get USC away from its own goal line on a third-and-10 play, and then gained 10 yards to pick up another first down. Caleb Williams ran for 24 yards, but then the Trojans allowed two sacks and threw an incomplete pass before punting to Utah. USC benefits from the timing of the injuries. The Trojans have a bye week this week and then by far USC's easiest three-game stretch of the season. USC visits 3-4 Arizona in Tucson on Oct. 29, then hosts 3-3 Cal on Nov. 5 and 1-5 Colorado on Friday, Nov. 11. - USC Football

USC coach Lincoln Riley said Tuesday that injured star linebacker Eric Gentry will be "day-to-day." He added that is "probably fortunate" that the Trojans have bye this week. In a 43-42 loss at Utah, Gentry came up holding different body parts a few times during the game, but continued to play through them. But he couldn't play through what appeared to be an ankle injury suffered in the fourth quarter when Gentry collided with a teammate after putting pressure on Utah quarterback Cameron Rising.

Gentry didn't play another snap, but it wasn't his last time on the field that night. After spending some time in the injury tent, Gentry emerged and hopped out to the middle of the field to give one final on-field speech to his defensive teammates. Trainers then put Gentry's foot and ankle in a walking boot.

OCT 10 PAC-12 DEFENSIVE PLAYER & DEFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE WEEK: Tuli Tuipulotu, Jr., DL, USC (Hawthorne, Calif.),...Was a force to be reckoned with on the Trojan defensive line in USC's 30-14 victory over Washington State. Tuipulotu recorded 5 tackles with 4.0 for loss for 18 yards and 3.0 sacks for 17 yards...Had 2 sacks in 3 plays during the first quarter. He fell one short of tying the school record of 4 sacks in a game done 4 times (Marcus Cotton against Oregon State in 1987, Junior Seau against Oregon State in 1989, Tim Ryan against UCLA in 1989 and Lawrence Jackson against Arizona State in 2007)...5th consecutive game in which Tuipulotu had at least 1 tackle for loss, and he now has 12.5 tackles for loss on the season. Now leads the nation in sacks with 1.17 per game and is tied for No. 1 in the nation in tackles for loss with 2.1 per game.

USC held the Cougars to 14 points. The 14 points scored were a season-low for Washington State, and its fewest since scoring 13 in a 24-13 loss at Utah on Sept. 25, 2021. USC held Washington State scoreless in the first quarter (10-0), the 3rd time in 6 games holding the opponent scoreless in the first quarter...USC is 6-0 to start the season for the first time since starting 6-0 in the 2006 season...2nd time this season winning the Defensive Lineman award (Week 2) and first time winning Defensive Player.   Caleb Williams threw two touchdown passes to Mario Williams and No. 6 Southern California shut out Washington State in the second half of a 30-14 victory Saturday night. Travis Dye rushed for 149 yards and a touchdown for the Trojans (6-0, 4-0 Pac-12), who stayed unbeaten in coach Lincoln Riley's first season. USC hadn't started a season 6-0 since 2006, near the height of coach Pete Carroll's powerhouse era. Caleb Williams went only 15 of 29 for 188 yards, but made big throws when necessary in an up-and-down performance. The Trojans didn’t need their quarterback to be brilliant this time, with Dye and the offensive line doing much of the damage in a workmanlike second half.

Cameron Ward passed for 172 yards while hitting Robert Ferrel and Nakia Watson for touchdowns for the Cougars (4-2, 1-2), who remained winless at the Coliseum since 2013. Washington State fell short of its second road victory over a Top 25 team this season when its offense bogged down on seven consecutive scoreless drives to end the game. Although USC's defense somehow didn't add to its 15 takeaways this season, the Trojans impressively shut down an opponent that had scored 107 points in its previous three games. Washington State didn't score in the final 43 minutes, and Tuli Tuipulotu got three of the Trojans' five sacks. USC even persevered through the absence of three significant players. Biletnikoff Award-winning receiver Jordan Addison left the Trojans' lineup during the second half with an undisclosed injury. USC already was without top linebacker Shane Lee due to injury, and it lost top safety Calen Bullock to a targeting call decided by video review in the second quarter. - USC/AP College Football

Caleb Williams passed for 348 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for another score, keeping No. 6 Southern California unbeaten in coach Lincoln Riley's first season with a 42-25 victory over Arizona State on Saturday night. Mario Williams, Malcolm Epps and Kyron Hudson caught TD passes from Caleb Williams, who returned to elite form after struggling through much of the Trojans' nail-biting 17-14 win at Oregon State last weekend. Travis Dye also rushed for 62 yards and two second-half touchdowns for USC (5-0, 3-0 Pac-12). Caleb Williams committed USC's first turnover of the season with an end-zone interception, but the Oklahoma transfer otherwise marched the Trojans up and down the field against Arizona State for 485 total yards while demonstrating his elusiveness, accuracy and playmaking acumen.

Emory Jones passed for 243 yards and Xazavian Valladay rushed for two touchdowns for the Sun Devils (1-4, 0-2), who gave an encouraging effort in their second game under interim head coach Shaun Aguano after the firing of Herm Edwards. Valladay and Jones scored early TDs to keep the game close for nearly three quarters, but Arizona State's offense stalled on three straight drives while USC pulled away. The Sun Devils had minus-6 yards rushing in the second half. Jordan Addison had eight catches for 105 yards for the Trojans, who are off to their first 5-0 start since 2020 - but their first in a full season since 2006, near the height of the Pete Carroll era. USC is also 3-0 under Riley at the Coliseum, where another lively crowd turned up to see the Trojans’ rebirth. USC's first three drives all ended in touchdowns, with Caleb Williams sneaking in for the first score. The quarterback also showed off his elusiveness while evading several near-sacks, and his across-the-body scoring pass to Mario Williams was an exceptional play. - USC/AP College Football
