No. 13 Southern California became the sixth Pac-12 team to opt out of a bowl game Saturday, citing a recommendation from team doctors and discussions with players. The Trojans (5-1), who lost 31-24 to Oregon in the Pac-12 title game Friday night, would have been at risk of falling under the conference's minimum number of 53 available scholarship players because of positive tests for COVID-19 and injuries after playing their third game in 13 days. Coach Clay Helton also cited a desire by players to see family and friends during the holidays after being sequestered during the season. USC joins Stanford, UCLA, Utah, Washington and Washington State in ruling out bowl bids, with the Huskies still dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak that prevented them from facing the Trojans in the conference title game. - AP College Football

The last thing Brenden Rice wanted was to get taken down by a punter. "I made a cut downfield heading towards the kicker, and hopefully I could slip him because I know if I get tackled by the kicker, my teammates are gonna talk crap to me all the time," Colorado's freshman receiver said. Fortunately, he didn't, making a move on Utah punter Ben Lennon and turning on the jets to finish an 81-yard punt return for touchdown in CU's 38-21 loss to the Utes on Saturday at Folsom Field. Between the loss, an injury to star linebacker Nate Landman and other miscues, the Buffs didn't have much to celebrate on Saturday. Rice, however, provided a spark. Colorado's Brenden Rice runs down the sideline on his way to a touchdown off a punt return during Saturday's game at Folsom Field.

In addition to his punt return touchdown - tied for the 12th-longest in CU history - Rice caught a screen pass on the first play of the third quarter and went 61 yards for a touchdown. He's the first CU player to score on a punt return and reception in the same game since Walter Stanley on Sept. 12, 1981. Ironically, Stanley's son, Dimitri, had key blocks on both of Rice's touchdowns. "It's good to see a young player like Brenden Rice make some of the plays he made today," head coach Karl Dorrell said. "He's a good young player. He's a player that we feel he's got a lot of upside and he's trending up and he's getting better week after week. We're happy he's getting kind of acclimated into the college level of play, and he'll continue to get better." - Daily Camera

One option that gives USC some flexibility is safety Talanoa Hufanga. The Trojans' leading tackler played some linebacker against Washington State as part of a package designed to defend against the spread. The idea was to use Hufanga's defensive back speed and linebacker build at 215 pounds to give the Cougars a look they had not seen from USC. While it was designed for a specific type of offense, Orlando isn't ruling it out as an option if further injuries force his hand. "We've also worked him in some spots where he's been playing inside, you just don't see him because you're not at practices," Orlando said. "We have some flexibility, but once these things start to roll a little bit you have to be proactive in a plan." - Orange County Register
