NOV 1 BIG 12 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Caleb Williams, Oklahoma, QB, Fr.,...Caleb Williams set an Oklahoma true freshman record with 402 passing yards and tied the school freshman record with six touchdown passes (most ever by an OU true freshman) in the Sooners' 52-21 win over Texas Tech. He completed 23 of 30 passes (76.7%) and finished with a 255.2 passing efficiency rating, which was the best nationally for the week and the best in the country this season among quarterbacks who attempted at least 30 passes. Williams became just the third player in OU history to throw for at least six touchdowns without an interception, joining Heisman Trophy winners Baker Mayfield (2016 vs. Texas Tech) and Kyler Murray (2018 vs. Baylor). On the season, Williams, who has started three games, has 14 TD passes against one interception and ranks second nationally with his 203.7 passing efficiency mark. - Big 12 Football

Caleb Williams' six touchdown passes for Oklahoma against Texas Tech were the most by a freshman since Oregon's Justin Herbert threw for the same number against California in 2016. Williams matched the Oklahoma freshman record set by Landry Jones in 2009. The last Oklahoma QB to throw for six TDs was Kyler Murray in 2018. - AP College Football

Drake London briefly broke into tears while sitting on a cart with an air cast around his right leg as he left the Coliseum field, perhaps for the final time. If one of the best receivers in Southern California's football history has played his last collegiate game, at least his final play was a touchdown catch during a win for the Trojans. London caught nine passes for 81 yards and two scores before leaving with a serious right ankle injury late in the first half, dampening USC's 41-34 victory over winless Arizona on Saturday night.

Keaontay Ingram rushed for a career-high 204 yards and a touchdown, and Gary Bryant Jr. caught two TD passes as the Trojans (4-4, 3-3 Pac-12) snapped their three-game home losing streak. They also extended the Wildcats' epic skid to 20 games, the longest active slide in the Football Bowl Subdivision and the longest in Pac-12 history. But London injured his right leg while making his second TD catch on a 6-yard pass from Jaxson Dart. London, who set an FBS record with 79 catches in his team's first seven games this season, returned to the USC bench in the second half with a cast on his leg. Interim coach Donte Williams said "there's a concern" the ankle injury will be season-ending for London, a prime NFL prospect. "Seeing a player like him go down, the whole team felt it," Ingram said. Kedon Slovis and Dart threw two touchdown passes apiece while splitting time behind center for the Trojans in a sharing plan set up by Williams, who apparently didn't tell Slovis or most of the rest of the USC offense about his intentions before the game. - Southern California/AP College Football

Oklahoma is starting to put it all together. Caleb Williams threw for 402 yards and six touchdowns and No. 4 Oklahoma rolled past Texas Tech 52-21 on Saturday. The Sooners won six of their first eight games by 12 or fewer points, and the offense, defense and special teams had spent much of the season bailing each other out. This time, Oklahoma produced the kind of dominant victory fans expected from the start of the season. "Fantastic team win," Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said. "Just a complete performance all the way around. Offense, defense, special teams - huge contributions from everybody. Really loved the week of preparation. The guys did a really good job carrying it over from from the practice field to the game field." Williams - a true freshman - tied Kyler Murray and Landry Jones for the second-most touchdown passes in a game in school history. Baker Mayfield threw seven against Texas Tech in 2016.

He bounced back from a rough first series. "I thought he had a really clear mind the entire way and obviously settled in there quickly," Riley said. "Really nice job of things inside the pocket, and obviously, made some key plays out of it." Riley said the plan wasn't to throw such a large percentage of the time. Williams threw 30 passes. The Sooners ran the ball just 20 times - many of which came after Williams left the game. "Just kind of how it evolved," he said. "We've shown we can be a team that can run it pretty well. Today was one of our better games throwing the football." Marvin Mims caught four passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns, and Mario Williams had five receptions for 100 yards and a score to help the Sooners (9-0, 6-0 Big 12) extend their nation-leading winning streak to 17 games. - Oklahoma/AP College Football

Travis Dye became the first player in Football Bowl Subdivision history to score touchdowns on four consecutive carries and No. 10 Oregon overcame an early 14-point deficit to beat UCLA 34-31 on Saturday. Anthony Brown had 381 yards of total offense for the Ducks (6-1, 3-1 Pac-12) against the Bruins (5-3, 3-2). Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said that Dye was questionable before the game due to migraines, but was able to give it a go. "They all just rallied around him and showed belief," Cristobal said. "It was a great game and really hard fought. There were big plays all over the place." Dye - who finished with 35 yards on 14 carries - also became the seventh Oregon running back since 2000 with at least four rushing touchdowns in a game.

Before Dye's record day, six players shared the mark with TDs on three consecutive carries, including Illinois' Howard Griffith and Virginia's Tiki Barber. Cal's Joe Ayoob was the last to accomplish it on Sept. 23, 2005, against New Mexico State. Oregon fell behind 14-0 during the first quarter before scoring on five of its next six drives. Dye had 5 yards on four carries in the first quarter before scoring on runs of 1 and 4 yards to tie it at 14. The Ducks trailed 17-14 at halftime, but Dye would score from 1 and 5 yards in the third quarter to give Oregon a 27-17 advantage. Brown was 29 of 39 passing for 296 yards, completing passes to 11 players. He also had six carries for 85 yards. His 43-yard TD run on a quarterback draw extended the Ducks' lead to 34-17 before the Bruins rallied. - Oregon/AP College Football

Facing a far tougher test than expected against Kansas, Caleb Williams bailed out No. 3 Oklahoma with quick feet and quick thinking. The freshman converted two crucial fourth downs in the fourth quarter, one with a 40-yard touchdown run, and Oklahoma rallied to avoid an enormous upset and beat Kansas 35-23 Saturday, The Sooners (8-0, 5-0 Big 12) trailed by double figures on two occasions - including 10-0 at the half -- but outscored the Jayhawks 35-13 in the second half to win their 16th straight game. "I'm excited for the win, but we played poor football in the first half," Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said. "We couldn't get Kansas off the field and missed several opportunities. I give our team credit for rising up. Kansas deserves a lot of credit, and they did a few things that gave us trouble." Jason Bean passed for 246 yards and a score for Kansas (1-6, 0-4), which led 17-7 late in the third quarter. A 66-yard run by Trevon West sparked the Oklahoma offense, and two plays later Williams tossed a short TD pass to cut the lead to 17-14 in the third quarter.

Kansas was able to stay in the game because of the legs of Devin Neal, who ran for 100 and a pair of touchdowns. Kansas didn't punt until the fourth quarter. "I'm proud of our guys and the way the first half especially went," Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. "We were able to mix some things together and keep their explosive offense off the field." In his second start, Williams threw for 178 yards and two scores and ran for 70 yards. Williams used a sharp cut to avoid two tacklers on a fourth-and-3 and then raced the distance for a 40-yard score to make it 28-17 midway through the fourth quarter. After KU cut it to 28-23, Oklahoma faced a fourth-and-1 near midfield. Kennedy Brooks looked as if he would be stopped short of the line to gain, but Williams took the ball from the back. "I saw Caleb so I gave it to him," Brooks said. "I knew it would be close if I was behind the line of scrimmage and I was happy Caleb ran for a first down." - Oklahoma/AP College Football

Williams completed 18 of 23 passes for 295 yards and four touchdowns without an interception (243.4 passer rating) and ran nine times for 66 yards, including a 41-yard score. He accounted for as many touchdowns (five) as he had incompletions. His 295 passing yards and four passing TDs both set OU true freshman records as the Sooners finished with 525 total yards and averaged a season-high 9.1 yards per play. His 261 passing yards in the first half were the most by an OU true freshman quarterback in any half in program history. - Big 12 Football

Caleb Williams had a big starting debut for No. 4 Oklahoma, throwing for 295 yards and four touchdowns and running for another score in the Sooners' 52-31 victory over TCU on Saturday night. The freshman from Washington, D.C., unseated Spencer Rattler as the starter after leading a comeback victory over Texas last week in Dallas. He started fast against TCU with an opening 75-yard touchdown drive that took just under three minutes. Williams didn't learn he was Oklahoma's starter until midweek. Riley said he was ready to play either of his former blue-chip quarterbacks, if necessary, against TCU. "Caleb got the opportunity tonight, and obviously did a great job with it," Riley said. "I'm confident that had Spencer gotten the opportunity tonight with the way he practiced, he would've played very well also. Thought the room handled it great. Proud of those guys for a winning effort and being team-first guys." Williams was 18 of 23 and ran for 66 yards on nine carries. He had a 41-yard scoring run, juking a defender at the line of scrimmage and taking off.

Oklahoma (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) began to pull away from TCU with three consecutive touchdown drives to open the third quarter, including two touchdown connections between Williams and receiver Jadon Haselwood. Haselwood finished with 56 yards on a team-leading six catches. The third-year Oklahoma receiver was impressed by his quarterback's poise, considering his inexperience. "He's a great leader for being a freshman. I don't think he ever feels pressure," Haselwood said of Williams. "He's always in a good mood. Even last week, he felt no pressure. Like no fear, and you can tell by the way he played. Just a great kid. He can sling it, he can run, he can do whatever he needs to do to get the ball downfield." - Oklahoma/AP College Football

OCT 11 BIG 12 NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: Caleb Williams, Oklahoma, QB, Fr.,...Backup freshman quarterback Williams accounted for 300 total yards and three touchdowns while commanding Oklahoma to its comeback win. OU outscored the Longhorns 38-13 from the time he took over QB duties late in the second quarter (when OU trailed 35-17) and scored on seven of nine possessions through the end of the game. Williams threw for 212 yards (16-of-25) with two touchdowns and rushed for 88 yards on four carries. His 300 yards of total offense were the most by an OU true freshman against Texas in series history. He entered for a 4th-and-inches play at the start of the second quarter and raced 66 yards for his second rushing TD of the season. With 1:02 left in the third quarter, he found Marvin Mims for a 14-yard strike and his first career passing touchdown. He hit Mims again on a 52-yard play that tied the game at 41 after OU's successful two-point conversion. Williams' 66-yard touchdown was OU's longest rushing play of the season and its third-longest rushing TD a by quarterback against Texas. - Big 12 football

Drake London racked up some incredible receiving numbers when Southern California's offense was on the field. When San Jose State had the ball, the Trojans' defense often looked impenetrable. Yet No. 15 USC's lead was still stuck in the single digits until a fourth-quarter surge rewarded the Trojans with a suitable margin of season-opening victory. London caught a career-high 12 passes for 137 yards, Greg Johnson returned a late interception 37 yards for a touchdown and the Trojans pulled away for a 30-7 victory over the Spartans.

USC still hasn't lost a home opener played in the Coliseum in the 21st century. But until the fourth quarter, this victory was another version of the underwhelming starts that have been common under seventh-year head coach Clay Helton. The Trojans led the defending Mountain West champions just 13-7 heading into the final period, but the USC defense capped its impressive day with Johnson's TD return to push the lead to 23-7 with 11:42 to play, followed by a stop of the Spartans on downs near the goal line with 7:20 left. "We felt like the defense was dominating the whole game, but the score was still close," USC defensive tackle Tuli Tuipulotu said. "We just had to keep working." They also had to get some help from the offense at the 98-year-old Coliseum, where USC's fans watched their team for the first time since 2019. - Southern California/AP College Football

Brenden Rice provided a glimpse of potential greatness as a true freshman with the Colorado Buffaloes in 2020. It was just a starting point, however, and the talented receiver from Chandler, Ariz., shook his head and smiled when asked recently what he did to improve this offseason. "A lot," said Rice, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound second-year freshman. "I was very out of control in my routes. I was out of control in my running. I didn't really know how to make everything look the same." Despite that, Rice caught six passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns in CU's five-game regular season in 2020. Including a punt return for a touchdown, he scored on three of the nine plays on which he touched the ball.

CU head coach Karl Dorrell, offensive coordinator/receivers coach Darrin Chiaverini, and offensive quality control coach Reggie Moore have all spent time working with Rice in preparation for this season. "His game has really gone to the next level," Chiaverini said. "He's got to still be consistent catching the football, but he's explosive." Considering his surname and position, it seems fitting that Rice is developing into one of the Buffs' best receivers. After all, his biological father, Jerry Rice, is the greatest receiver to ever play the game, with NFL records for receptions (1,549), receiving yards (22,895) and total touchdowns (208) that might never get broken. Rice, however, is proud of the fact that he's become a potential star on his own merit. - Daily Camera

Perhaps the writing's been on the wall since his breakout season as a true freshman. But USC junior outside linebacker Drake Jackson eliminated any doubt Friday as he declared that the 2021 season will be his last in college before leaving for the NFL. "This is my last year. I got to get out of here," Jackson said after Friday's practice. "I'mma leave with a bang, too." Jackson first arrived at USC in the spring of 2019 out of Corona Centennial High and immediately started to turn heads with a sack and pick six in the spring game while playing defensive end.

That translated into the regular season, with Jackson recording 11.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, three pass breakups and a forced fumble. In the offseason, USC brought in defensive coordinator Todd Orlando, who moved Jackson to a hybrid outside linebacker role where sometimes Jackson would go into pass rush and other times would drop back in coverage. This led to mixed results as Jackson adjusted to the role in the abridged 2020 season, finishing with two sacks and 5.5 TFLs but still earning a spot on the second-team All-Pac-12 for a second consecutive year. But in his second year at the new position, Jackson feels more confident. "Last year was the first time playing that defense, being a linebacker, and I was kind of hesitant on some stuff," Jackson said, "and now I can really just go." - Orange County Register

Sometimes it can take some time to adjust to a new football team, a new offense, a new scheme. Like wading into the Pacific Ocean and letting your body adjust to the water temperature. Or, you can run straight into the water without hesitation. That's what Keaontay Ingram has done since transferring to USC. The former Texas running back was one of the breakout performers of the spring for the Trojans, making an immediate impact with his powerful style and burst through the line of scrimmage. It's been clear that Ingram has had no issues adjusting to the new offense at USC.

"Football is still football at the end of the day. Everybody pretty much do the same main concepts," Ingram said nonchalantly. "Just the details of the game and stuff like that. So picking up on this offense is like a cakewalk for me." Ingram speaks with the same confidence and ease he displays when he runs. He says it was a simple decision to choose USC after three years at Texas, saying at this stage in his career he knew what he wanted: The chance for playing time, and the chance to win. "Of course I do have goals, but I mean it's not going to matter if we don't win a championship," he said. "So that's the ultimatum - if we win championships, everybody get a good-paying job." - Orange County Register
