  WEEK 8 OVC-BIG SOUTH FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Johnny Weber, QB, 6-5, 213, R-Fr., Kenosha, Wis., Southeast Missouri,...Improved to 2-0 as a starter by tallying 313 yards of total offense and four touchdowns as Southeast Missouri topped Eastern Illinois 42-13 for Homecoming. Weber completed 21-of-31 passes for 283 yards and four touchdowns while carrying the ball seven times for 30 yards (4.3 ypc). All four of his touchdown passes (two to Donnie Cheers and two to Kalvin Gilbert) came in the first half as the Redhawks built a 35-6 halftime advantage. His scores went for 54, 67, 44 and 4 yards.   Donnie Cheers set career highs of 165 receiving yards and two touchdowns, Johnny Weber threw a career-high four touchdown passes, and DJ Delmore had a 95-yard pick-six for Southeast Missouri State in a 42-13 drubbing over Eastern Illinois on Saturday. Delmore opened the scoring with the first of five interceptions for the Redhawks (3-4, 2-1 OVC-Big South), picking off Cole LaCrue for an opening score.

LaCrue was 5-of-15 passing for 73 yards with three interceptions. Backups Connor Wolf and Brady Ford had an interception each. Justus Johnson had two for the Redhawks in the program's 500th win. Weber was 21 of 31 with 283 yards in his second career start. His other two passing touchdowns went to Kalvin Gilbert, who had 48 receiving yards. Eastern Illinois (3-4, 2-2) ended eight of its 18 drives in turnovers or turnover on downs. Two additional drives ended either half. Weber completed 24-of-39 passes (to eight different receivers) for 283 yards and two touchdowns in the win. He had a nine-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and added a 10-yarder early in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.   Redshirt freshman Johnny Weber made his first career start for Southeast Missouri State and threw two touchdown passes, Brandon Epton Jr. ran for two TDs and the Redhawks beat Tennessee State 28-12 on Saturday night. Weber, who finished the UT Martin game last Saturday after starting quarterback Jax Leatherwood and backup Patrick Heitert sustained knee injuries, was 24-of-39 passing for 283 yards with two interceptions. Cole Ruble finished with 93 yards rushing on 12 carries for Southeast Missouri State (2-4, 1-1 OVC-Big South).

Weber threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Donnie Cheers to open the scoring with 5:57 left in the first quarter and Epton added TD runs of 36 and 2 yards, the latter of which capped a 10-play, 99-yard drive and made it 21-0 midway through the second. Freddy Perez made 36-yard field goals just before halftime and about three minutes into the third quarter before Zack Simmons-Brown ran for a 50-yard touchdown to make it 21-12 with 13:22 to play. The Redhawks responded with a nine-play, 75-yard drive that capped the scoring with Weber hit Kalvin Gilbert for a 10-yard TD with 10:23 left. Byron McNair was 15-of-32 passing for 175 yards for Tennessee State (1-5, 0-3) before he left the game with about five minutes to play due to an injury. - AP College Football

His longest attempt and make of the game, 48 yards, came on the first possession of the second half. Keller was perfect (3-for-3) on PATs and averaged 63.5 yards on six kickoffs. The transfer from San Diego Mesa College, completed 21-of-33 passes and threw touchdowns passes of 55 and 8 yards in the second half while rushing for a three-yarder in the first half. Through two games this season he has completed 68.1 percent of his passes and thrown four touchdown passes with no interceptions.   Jax Leatherwood threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns and Southeast Missouri scored 30 straight points in a 30-21 home-opening win over North Alabama on Saturday night. SEMO (1-1), which trailed 7-0 with 43 seconds left in the first quarter, answered by scoring the next 30 points and UNA never recovered. The Lions scored the game's first points on a fourth-down 1-yard touchdown plunge by quarterback Ari Patu. Justin Keller kicked a 29-yard field goal to cut UNA's lead to 7-3 with 6:17 left in the second quarter.

The Redhawks took their first lead of the night on a 3-yard run by Leatherwood. His first rushing touchdown of the season finished an eight-play, 78-yard drive putting SEMO ahead, 10-7, at the 2:12 mark. Keller connected once more, this time from 27 yards out as time expired to give SEMO a 13-7 advantage at the half. In the third, Keller kicked a 48-yard field goal for a 16-7 margin. Leatherwood threw a 55-yard touchdown to Cam Pedro to extend the lead to 23-7. Leatherwood threw an 8-yard touchdown to Andrew Civey with 5:33 remaining to make it 30-7.   True freshman Payton Brown scored three touchdowns, redshirt freshman quarterback Carter Hensley led a second-half rally and Southeast Missouri State defeated North Alabama 37-15 on Saturday night in the FCS Kickoff Game. Brown, who finished with 97 yards, scored on a 1-yard run late in the second quarter and a 25-yard run late in the third. His 1-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter was set up by a 47-yard quarterback keeper by Hensley. In his first game action since high school, Hensley subbed in for injured starter Paxton DeLaurent and completed 10 of 14 passes for 100 yards. His 1-yard touchdown run gave the Redhawks a 34-15 lead with about 5 minutes remaining in the game.

North Alabama had 135 yards rushing in the first half while SE Missouri passed for 149 yards. The Lions had short touchdown runs by Jayvian Allen and Ari Patu. A two-point conversion after Allen's touchdown helped produce a 15-13 halftime lead. DeLaurent completed 14 of 17 passes for 96 yards but left the game in the second quarter with a shoulder injury. With DeLaurent sidelined, the Redhawks found more balance in their offense and their defense held North Alabama without a point in the second half.   2023 ALL-BIG SOUTH-OVC FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION FIRST TEAM: RB - Geno Hess, Gr., Southeast Missouri,...A native of Peoria, Illinois, Hess finished off his six-year career by becoming the first player in SEMO history to rush for 5,000 yards. The Redhawks all-time leading rusher, Hess ran for over 1,000 yards for the third-straight season. He carried the ball 186 times for 1,007 yards and 10 touchdowns and caught 28 passes for 220 yards in 11 starts this year. Hess went over 100 yards on six occasions and gained a season-high 179 yards in his final game as a Redhawk at Bryant (Nov. 18). Hess, a first-team selection for the fourth year in a row, racked up 5,119 yards and 63 touchdowns in 56 games during his career.
