  Pierre Strong scored two touchdowns and the South Dakota State special teams blocked three kicks as the Jackrabbits beat Southern Utah 43-7 on Saturday night. Strong had 11 carries for 85 yards and a score and added a 45-yard touchdown catch. J'Bore Gibbs completed 15 of 24 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions for South Dakota State (2-1), which came in ranked No. 3 in the FCS Coaches poll. After forcing the Jackrabbits to punt on the game's opening drive, Southern Utah (1-2) drove to the SDSU 36 where, on fourth-and-5, Thomas Duckett was stopped for a 4-yard loss. On the next play, Gibbs connected with Cade Johnson for a 23-yard gain and, three plays later on fourth-and-3, hit Johnson again, this time for a 30-yard touchdown.

Mikey Daniel scored on a 1-yard run early in the second quarter and C.J. Wilson's 8-yard TD run with three minutes left in the first half made it 21-0. Chris Helbig scored on a 1-yard keeper to get the Thunderbirds on the board just before halftime but, on the first drive of the second half, South Dakota State's Jaxon Janke blocked a punt that rolled out of the back of the end zone for a safety. Christian Rozeboom scored on a 27-yard interception return on SUU's next drive to make it 30-7. The junior from Tampa, Florida, accounted for two of Samford's three scores, rushing for a team-high 79 yards and a touchdown and throwing for 230 yards and a score, going 17-for-25 through the air. His 30-yard touchdown run in the third quarter proved the difference in the contest as the Bulldogs topped the Terriers for the fifth straight time and halted Wofford's 18-game win streak in home openers.   SEPT 2/WEEK 1 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Chris Oladokun, Samford, Jr., QB, Tampa, Fla.,...Samford quarterback Chris Oladokun tied the Samford records for touchdown passes and touchdowns responsible for in the Bulldogs' 59-58, double-overtime loss at Tennessee Tech on Saturday. The junior from Tampa, Florida, was an efficient 19-for-24 passing for 428 yards and six TDs against the Golden Eagles, while he also rushed for 42 yards and another score.

His pass efficiency rating of 311.47 ranks eighth in a game in SoCon history, while his six passing TDs ties for second and his seven touchdowns responsible for tie for third. In his Samford debut against Youngstown State on Aug. 24, Oladokun entered the contest in the fourth quarter and went 7-for-10 for 125 yards and a touchdown, adding 14 yards and another score on the ground.   Chris Oladokun dashed 30 yards for the game-winning score in the third quarter as Samford earned its first win of the season by knocking off Wofford, 21-14 in a Southern Conference opener Saturday. Samford starred the season with a 45-22 loss to Youngstown State and a heartbreaker in two overtimes at Tennessee Tech. Wofford came into the game ranked No. 21 in the Football Championship Subdivision. Both teams came into the game after a bye week. Wofford lost its opener at South Carolina State. Samford now owns 12 victories in 17 games against Wofford.Oladokun completed 17 of 25 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown, but he was also picked off twice. He ran 12 times for 77 yards, including the game winning score. His 12-yard pass to Robert Adams in the first quarter tied the game at 14-14. Wofford attempted just six passes, completing two and finished with negative yardage. Joe Newman carried 16 times for 105 yards to lead the Terriers on the ground, where they gained 284 yards. Nathan Walker carried had 32 yards rushing on 10 carries and scored both Wofford touchdowns, staking his team to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. - AP College Football

  2019 PRESEASON PHIL STEELE/DRAFT SCOUT ALL-FCS FIRST TEAM: Cade Johnson, South Dakota St, Jr.,...Johnson established a Jackrabbit single-season record with 17 touchdown catches as part of a 67-reception, 1,332-yard campaign in 2018. His four touchdown receptions in the Sept. 8 season opener against Montana State tied a single-game school record. He posted four other games with two touchdown receptions for an SDSU squad that recorded a 10-3 mark and reached the FCS semifinals for the second year in a row.

Johnson also has been a key contributor on special teams as he again led the Jackrabbits in kickoff returns with 462 yards on 17 attempts for an average of 27.2 yards in 2018. In his first season, he set an SDSU single-season record with 839 kickoff return yards, highlighted by two returns for touchdowns. - South Dakota State Football
