South Carolina is adding another graduate transfer to its football roster. Defensive back Carlins Platel of Division II Assumption College in Massachusetts committed to the Gamecocks on Wednesday. Platel, who graduates in May, has been in the transfer portal since October. Coastal Carolina and Austin Peay also had offered Platel, and Mississippi State showed interest. The Gamecocks reached out to Platel over the past week. USC has one scholarship left for Class of 2021, though it's possible Platel could count toward 2022's numbers. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder appeared in 33 games over three seasons for Assumption and had 96 tackles and picked off seven passes. He was a first-team all Northeast Conference selection in 2019. Assumption didn't play football in 2020 because of COVID-19. - Rock Hill Herald

  01/31/21 - Shi SmithrSr/2021, South Carolina, 5-10, 186 (DS#31 WR) + More +

Shi Smith made a positive impression this week in his quest to become a professional football player. The former South Carolina Gamecocks standout had three catches for 57 yards Saturday in the annual Reese's Senior Bowl held in Mobile, Alabama. He was a favorite target for American team teammate and Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond, whose 32-yard connection with Smith was the game's longest play from scrimmage. Smith stood out at times during this week's all-star game practices and, by most accounts, helped his standing for the NFL Draft that begins April 29. - Rock Hill Herald

South Carolina football just got some much-needed help with its pass rush. Georgia State's Jordan Strachan, the nation's co-leader in sacks in the 2020 season, announced Wednesday he is transferring to the Gamecocks. Strachan put his name in the transfer portal on Monday. Strachan posted the news of his new school on Twitter where he thanked Georgia State, his coaches, mentors and trainers to help get to this point. This year, Strachan had a school-record 10.5 sacks, tied for most in FBS, and had a school record 14.5 tackles for loss as part of his 41 tackles. He was part of a Georgia State defense that had a school-record 35 sacks. - Rock Hill Herald

  01/09/21 - Collin HillrSr/2021, South Carolina, 6-4, 213 (DS#23 QB) + More +

South Carolina's quarterback room is starting to grow somewhat thin. A school spokesperson confirmed Friday that fifth-year senior Collin Hill will not return after a challenging lone season with the program. Hill will begin training for USC's NFL pro timing day, according to the school. Hill also accepted an invitation to play in the College Gridiron Showcase in Texas on Jan. 17-21. Hill joined the Gamecocks as a grad transfer, following his former coach Mike Bobo from Colorado State, starting eight games before ceding the starting job to freshman Luke Doty. - Rock Hill Herald

After a solid freshman campaign, OU quarterback Spencer Rattler is projected to win the 2021 Heisman Trophy at 7/1 odds, according to SportsBettingDime.com. Quarterbacks have won the award in nine of the past 11 years, and it's projected to see a return to that pattern next year with Rattler. In his first year as the Sooners' starter, Rattler posted 3,031 passing yards and 28 passing touchdowns with just seven interceptions. He also tacked on six rushing touchdowns. Rattler already has a leg up on his top competition, as no other projected top-four finisher has started more than four games at their respective schools. Clemson's freshman QB D.J. Uiagalelei trails Rattler with 9/1 odds, followed by Georgia transfer QB JT Daniels with 11/1 odds and Alabama's freshman passer Bryce Young with 13/1 odds to win. - Daily Oklahoman

  01/05/21 - *Kevin HarrisJr/2022, South Carolina, 5-10, 222 (DS#41 RB) + More +

The rise of South Carolina running back Kevin Harris continues. Before the season, it wasn't clear that the sophomore tailback would even start for the Gamecocks. Months later, Harris' name has surfaced on an early list of odds for the 2021 Heisman Trophy, college football's highest individual honor. While not a frontrunner for the award - Harris (+2000) ranks 16th according to odds from MyBookie Sportsbook - his inclusion is a testament to a breakout 2020 season. After emerging early in the season as South Carolina's bell cow, Harris became the ninth Gamecock to run for 1,000 yards in a season. His 1,138 yards and 15 touchdowns came in just 10 games and are fifth-most yards and tied for second-most touchdowns in a single season in prgoram history. - The State

Former Georgia Tech wide receiver Ahmarean Brown will be a South Carolina Gamecock. Brown, who led the Yellow Jackets in receptions, receiving yardage and touchdown catches as a freshman in 2019 before entering the transfer portal at the end of the 2020 season, made his announcement Thursday. In 2019, Brown, from Tampa, Fla., caught 21 passes for 396 yards and seven touchdowns as a freshman, tying Calvin Johnson's school record for touchdown catches by a freshman. This season, his production declined, with 11 catches for 183 yards and one touchdown in seven games as wide receiver Jalen Camp and running back Jahmyr Gibbs assumed larger roles in the passing game. Brown missed the team's final three games. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Spencer Rattler threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score, Rhamondre Stevenson rushed for 186 yards and No. 8 Oklahoma beat 10th-ranked SEC runner-up Florida 55-20 on Wednesday night in the Cotton Bowl. Back in the same NFL stadium where 11 days earlier they won their sixth consecutive Big 12 title, the Sooners (9-2, No. 6 CFP) jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first seven minutes. The 55 points were their most ever in a bowl game, while piling up a Cotton Bowl-record 684 total yards. Rattler threw a 27-yard TD pass to fellow freshman Marvin Mims on the game's opening drive, and Florida's first possession ended with Tre Norwood's 45-yard interception return for a touchdown. That was the first of three picks thrown by Heisman Trophy finalist quarterback Kyle Trask in the first quarter, after only five all season.

Oklahoma played in its sixth consecutive New Year's Six bowl game, but the last three seasons had lost College Football Playoffs semifinal games while giving up an average of 54 points to different SEC teams. The Sooners finished this season with an eight-game winning streak. They had started 0-2 in Big 12 play for the first time since 1998, effectively knocking them out of playoff contention by mid-October. These Gators (8-4, No. 7 CFP) were much different than the team that just 11 days earlier fell 52-46 to No. 1 Alabama in the SEC title game, and had averaged nearly 42 points a game. - AP College Football

  12/29/20 - Nick MuserSr/2022, South Carolina, 6-5, 258 (DS#20 TE) + More +

Nothing's official yet, but South Carolina football's new tight ends coach certainly seems confident that the Gamecocks' top player at the position will return for another season. Erik Kimrey has been a part of new head coach Shane Beamer's staff for only a couple of days, but he's taken the time to speak with senior Nick Muse, who led the tight end unit in 2020 with 30 catches, 425 yards and a touchdown. And from that conversation, Kimrey said, he got a positive indication that Muse will be back. "Had a great conversation, and I feel confident that he's gonna be back next year," Kimrey said. "He's still working through some things in terms of talking to some people, but we had a wonderful conversation. He seems like a great guy and I look forward to him coming back and being a great leader on this team. We need him." - Rock Hill Herald
