South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers left Saturday night's game against Vanderbilt after taking a hit to the head. Sellers took a helmet-to-helmet hit from Vanderbilt's Langston Patterson, who came free on a blitz, after he threw a pass late in the second quarter with the No. 11 Gamecocks trailing 14-7. Patterson received a roughing the passer penalty and was disqualified from the game for targeting. South Carolina coach Shane Beamer expressed displeasure with the hit during a halftime interview, but offered no update on Sellers' status. "There's not (an update). Right now, we don't know,” Beamer said. Sellers went to the South Carolina bench after the hit and was later taken to the locker room. He did not return for the start of the second half. He was replaced by Luke Doty. Sellers completed 6 of 7 passes for 94 yards with one costly interception in the red zone. He was sacked once and had minus-3 yards rushing. - AP College Football

Vicari Swain returned two punts for touchdowns to rescue a struggling offense for No. 10 South Carolina as the Gamecocks beat South Carolina State 38-10 early Sunday. The kickoff was delayed more than two hours because of lightning in the area. South Carolina (2-0) scored more from its special teams and defense than its offense as Jaron Willis also returned a fumble for a score and LaNorris Sellers couldn't get the offense going for a second week. South Carolina looked like it was up past its bedtime, trailing 3-0 before Swain eluded a tackler right on top of him and then ran 64 yards for a touchdown. His second TD was a 42-yard return after he picked up a partially blocked punt just before it stopped rolling.

Swain said South Carolina's special teams noticed Wofford blocked a punt and returned a kickoff for touchdowns in an opening game loss to South Carolina state last week. "If Wofford was going to be able to return one, I should be able to. And I ran with that," Swain said. When a team can threaten to block a punt or return for a touchdown it puts their opponent in a bind and keeps fans from going to get food and a drink too quickly, South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said. "They've created an identity already where people will stay in their seats on fourth down," he said. With his 80-yard punt return TD in last week's opener against Virginia Tech, Swain has tied the school's single-season record. The sophomore defensive back is the first FBS player with two punt returns scores in a game since Penn State's Daequan Hardy did it against UMass in October 2023. - South Carolina/AP College Football

South Carolina gained just 253 yards against the FCS Bulldogs (1-1) and the usually explosive Sellers threw six incompletions in his first eight attempts and finished the game with 128 yards passing. He ran for 23 yards and was the Gamecocks leading rusher until the game's final play. "We know we have to be a lot better. We can't rely on our defense and special teams to score three touchdowns a game," said Beamer, who added his team didn't run or pass the ball efficiently. Sellers said several times he thinks the offense can find an answer to why their execution and communication isn't working as Southeastern Conference play begins. "I'll definitely be better," the sophomore quarterback said. - AP College Football

Vicari Swain returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown to break open a close game, LaNorris Sellers threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Nyck Harbor, and No. 13 South Carolina beat Virginia Tech 24-11 on Sunday in the opener for both teams. Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer used his brand of “Beamerball” to pull away from the school where his dad, Frank Beamer, originated the style of play that emphasizes turnovers and big plays on special teams. Frank was in attendance at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, wearing South Carolina black. South Carolina intercepted Virginia Tech's Kyron Drones twice - once in the red zone to halt a first-quarter drive, and again in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.

The Gamecocks led 10-8 early in the fourth when Swain fielded a punt by Nick Veltsistas, turned upfield and made several would-be tacklers miss on the way to the end zone. After a Virginia Tech field goal, Sellers found Harbor wide open on a deep post route to restore South Carolina's two-score advantage. Virginia Tech's offense was held without a touchdown. John Love kicked three field goals, including a 56-yarder, and the Hokies' defense contributed a safety in the first quarter when Kelvin Gilliam Jr. and Kody Huisman took down Sellers in the end zone. Sellers scored South Carolina's first touchdown on a 15-yard rush and was 12 of 19 passing for 209 yards and the TD to Harbor, who had three catches for 99 yards. Harbor had another potential TD taken away by a replay review. - South Carolina/AP College Football

South Carolina announced Monday that transfer running back Rahsul Faison has been granted an additional season of eligibility by the NCAA to play this season. Faison, a Utah State transfer who earned second-team All-Mountain West honors in 2024, signed with the Gamecocks in January but had to wait until the week of the season opener to finally get cleared to play. The No. 5 running back in ESPN's transfer portal top 100 rankings will be a seventh-year senior this fall and is expected to make a significant impact in a South Carolina offense that must replace All-SEC running back Raheim Sanders. - ESPN CFB

South Carolina recovered two fumbles inside the 10 leading to its only two touchdowns and the Gamecocks beat Old Dominion 23-19 on Saturday night. South Carolina freshman quarterback LaNorris Sellers ran for a 4-yard touchdown with 6:11 to go to finally push the Gamecocks (1-0) past the Monarchs (0-1), picked to finish sixth in the seven-team Sun Belt Conference East Division. Sellers did not have a stellar debut. He completed just 10 of 23 passes for 114 yards and carried the ball 22 times for 68 yards. Old Dominion quarterback Grant Wilson struggled too. He had both fumbles deep in his own territory, threw a second quarter interception in the end zone and ended the Monarchs last chance with another interception with 1:29 left in the game. - AP College Football

Quarterback Spencer Rattler, perhaps the brightest spot for South Carolina in a losing season, is giving up his final year in college for the NFL. Rattler, a fifth-year senior who spent his first three seasons at Oklahoma, announced his intentions Wednesday on social media. "This has been a dream and goal of mine since I was a little kid and cannot wait for the chance to turn my dream into reality," he said in his post. Rattler called his two years with the Gamecocks the best of his football life. He led South Carolina to consecutive wins over top 10-, potentially playoff-bound teams in Tennessee and Clemson in 2022, when the Gamecocks went 8-5.

Rattler and the team had higher hopes this season, but a four-game SEC losing streak in September and October left them at 5-7. South Carolina fell to rival Clemson 16-7 this past Saturday night, when Rattler was pressured throughout the game and held to a season-low 112 passing yards. "This place meant everything to me," Rattler said afterward. "Coming here, in two years and just enjoying every moment: the adversity, the success. I wanted to be a part of change in this program. And I feel like I put 110% effort into it every day." He teased fans that he might make use of his sixth season of eligibility before declaring that he was turning pro. Rattler finished his career with 10,807 yards passing, 77 touchdowns and 32 interceptions. His draft status is all over the place in year considered deep with talented quarterbacks. Rattler appeared in some first-round mock drafts earlier this fall. He also has been projected as a late second-day or early third-day selection. He started all 25 games at South Carolina and 42 of 48 contests in his career, which began with the Sooners. - AP College Football
