  09/06/20 - Kawaan BakerrSr/2021, South Alabama, 6-1, 210 (DS#56 WR) + More +

Campbell and his assistants told anyone who would listen that the trio of senior Kawaan Baker and juniors Jalen Tolbert and Jalen Wayne were going to be catalysts for the Jaguars' offense this season, and Thursday proved that. The three combined for 16 receptions for 352 yards and three touchdowns, including a 6-reception, 169-yard, 2-touchdown performance by Tolbert. The junior from Mobile has had back-to-back dominant games, following a 5-144-4 showing in a season-ending win over Arkansas State in 2019.

Wayne, also from Mobile, turned in a 6-101 ledger, while Baker caught four passes for 82 yards - including a 52-yard touchdown. South Alabama's offensive plan sometimes appears to be "throw it up to the big receivers and let them make a play," but that's not a bad strategy given the talent the Jaguars have at that position. Quarterback Desmond Trotter was careless with the ball on a few occasions Thursday, but the good far outweighed the bad. - Birmingham News

  09/01/20 - Jake BentleyrSr/2022, South Alabama, 6-4, 225 (DS#999 QB) + More +

After seeing seven players drafted last spring and several other players sign NFL deals, the Utes won't have nearly as many pro prospects from this year's team. The Utes only have 16 seniors on their current roster and only about a half dozen are likely starters when the Utes play again. Among the seniors is South Carolina transfer quarterback Jake Bentley, who had three good seasons for the Gamecocks and possibly wouldn't want to wait until next year to play, if he felt he had a chance to play in the NFL.

Other top seniors are defensive back Vonte Davis, long-snapper Keegan Markgraf, receivers Samson Nacua and Tyrone Young-Smith, offensive linemen Orlando Umana and Bam Olaseni and defensive linemen Viane Moala, Mufi Hill-Hunt, Hauati Pututau, Pita Tonga and Maxs Tupai. In the depth chart released before spring practice, only Davis, Umana, Moala, Hill-Hunt, Pututau and Markgraf were listed as starters with Bentley as a possible starter. When asked about the possibility of a pro day for his seniors this fall or next spring, Whittingham said, "We want to give our seniors every advantage possible. Any exposure we can give them, we'll certainly try to do." - Deseret News

Although nothing is yet official, all signs point toward sophomore Desmond Trotter winning the starting quarterback job over junior-college transfer Chance Lovertich. Trotter started the final four games of 2019 for the Jaguars, and threw four touchdown passes in a 34-30, season-ending win over Arkansas State. Campbell said that "Desmond is the 1 and Chance is the 2," though offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield left open the possibility both could play vs. Southern Miss. "I like the way our quarterbacks are playing right now," Edenfield said. "I think Desmond and Chance both will play; they both had have a good fall camp. They're both ready to play and I think either one of them can get the job done for us." In three fall scrimmages, Trotter - the grandson of Alabama and NFL great Ozzie Newsome - has completed 23 of 41 passes for 281 yards and three touchdowns with three interceptions. Lovertich, who led Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to the NJCAA championship last season, has completed 26 of 53 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. - Birmingham News
