South Alabama has hired Indiana defensive coordinator Kane Wommack to take over its team. South Alabama announced the hiring of the 33-year-old on Saturday, making him the youngest current head coach in FBS. Wommack replaces Steve Campbell, who was fired six days earlier after a 4-7 season. Wommack, who is in his third season as linebackers coach and second as the defensive coordinator at Indiana, is a candidate for the Broyles Award given to the nation’s top assistant coach. He helped the Hoosiers lead the nation with 17 interceptions and rise to a No. 8 national ranking. - AP College Football

South Alabama linebacker Riley Cole, playing in his final game with the Jaguars, totaled 10 tackles. Campbell surprised Cole in pre-game Senior Day festivities by handing him his invitation to play in the 2021 Reese's Senior Bowl, set for Jan. 30 at Hancock Whitney Stadium. "That is one of my biggest accomplishments," Cole said. "It was huge to get that. It is what I have worked for since I got here." - AL.com

Sophomore quarterback Carter Bradley threw for 432 yards and three touchdowns and Toledo beat Northern Illinois 41-24 on Saturday. Toledo (3-2, 3-2 Mid-American Conference) broke the game in open in the fourth quarter after the two played to a 17-all tie in the first half and a scoreless third quarter. Thomas Cluckey's 22-yard field goal with 11:31 left to play ended an 11-play, 51-yard drive. Northern Illinois, now winless in five games, punted on its following drive.

That set up the Rockets for a seven-play, 80-yard drive that ended with Bradley throwing a 15-yard touchdown pass to Ronnie Blackmon with 4:48 left. After the Huskies turned it over on downs, Micah Kelly ran for a 25-yard touchdown run to put it out of reach. In what was Bradley's third-career start, he completed 29 of 44 passes with a pair of interceptions, one of which was tipped near the line of scrimmage. Danzel McKinley-Lewis caught six passes for 110 yards and a touchdown and Isaiah Winstead hauled in eight catches for 106 yards for the Rockets. For the Huskies, Ross Bowers threw for 273 yards and two touchdowns, Harrison Waylee ran for 114 yards and a score and Tyrice Richie had seven catches for 111 yards and a TD. - Toledo/AP College Football

  12/02/20 - Jalen TolbertrSr/2022, South Alabama, 6-2, 193 (DS#11 WR) + More +

Tolbert's numbers in two games vs. the Red Wolves are staggering - 15 catches, 396 yards and seven touchdowns. The Mobile native caught 10 passes for 252 yards and three scores - all of them from at least 37 yards out. His yards against Arkansas State this season are a school record as were his four touchdowns last season. He already holds the South Alabama single-season record for receiving yards (993) and is closing in on program standards for catches (he needs three more) and touchdowns (one more). - Birmingham News

NOV 30 SUN BELT OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jalen Tolbert, South Alabama,...Tolbert recorded a career-best 10 receptions for a school game-record 252 yards, the third-highest total in Sun Belt Conference history, and three touchdowns to lead the Jaguars to a come-from-behind victory at Arkansas State. The junior posted all three scores in the second half after South fell behind by 10 points; he reached the end zone from 42 and 37 yards out in the third quarter to put the Jags back in front, and after the Red Wolves regained the lead in the final period his 51-yard touchdown catch put USA in front for good. Not only was it his second 100-yard game of the season, with the effort Tolbert became the school's season record holder with 993 receiving yards this fall while tying the school standard with eight touchdown catches on the year. - Sun Belt Conference Football

Mississippi freshman Damarcus Thomas was injured in practice Monday and had to be taken by helicopter to a hospital in Memphis after initially being unable to move. Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin said Thomas initially didn't have "any feeling in his entire body." Assistant athletic director for sports medicine Pat Jernigan later said Thomas had regained movement in all his extremities and that doctors are optimistic. "I don't know what that means exactly, but it sure feels like great news compared to what it was 20 minutes ago," Kiffin said after being told earlier that Thomas had regained some movement. He said Thomas's family was called from the practice field. The freshman tight end from Whatley, Alabama, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and then airlifted to Memphis Regional Hospital. Kiffin didn't specify how the injury occurred but said that Thomas took a hit. He said he hadn't been around that kind of injury situation personally. - AP College Football

  10/28/20 - Kawaan BakerrSr/2021, South Alabama, 6-1, 210 (DS#56 WR) + More +

Kawaan Baker has been overshadowed by Tolbert - and at times Jalen Wayne - this season, but enjoyed perhaps the best game of his career on Saturday. The senior caught six passes for a career-high 154 yards and three touchdowns, the first an 80-yarder that gave the Jaguars a 17-0 lead in the first quarter. He later added TD grabs of 15 and 4 yards, the first on third-and-6, the latter on fourth-and-goal. ULM appeared to load up to stop Tolbert - who still caught two passes for 68 yards - and Baker was the beneficiary. He also had one carry as the Jaguars' wildcat quarterback, for which opponents will now have to prepare. Baker and Tolbert are one of the top receiver tandems in the Sun Belt - if not the entire country - and each is capable of taking over a game if the other is having an off-night. - Birmingham News

  10/26/20 - Kawaan BakerrSr/2021, South Alabama, 6-1, 210 (DS#56 WR) + More +

OCT 26 SUN BELT CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Kawaan Baker, South Alabama,...Baker caught six passes for a career-best 154 yards and three touchdowns to help lead the Jaguars past a ULM defense that entered play allowing just 167 yards per game passing; it was the highest receiving yards total in the Sun Belt this weekend while he matched the most touchdown receptions in the league this year.

The senior's 80-yard touchdown catch in the final minute of the opening quarter was the second-longest pass play in school history and the longest in the conference this season, and he added scores from 16 and five yards out in the second half to post multiple touchdowns in the same game for first time since South visited Louisiana on Nov. 17, 2018. With the effort his second 100-yard game of the year, and third of his career. Baker went over 1,500 receiving yards in his career while finishing the night tied for second on South's career record list with 14 touchdown catches and moving into the top five on the program's all-time scoring list. - Sun Belt Football

Devin Rockette returned an interception a school-record 95 yards to open scoring early, Kawaan Baker hauled in six passes for 154 yards with three touchdowns and South Alabama walloped Louisiana-Monroe 38-14 on a hot and humid Saturday night. The win was a second straight for South Alabama (3-2, 2-0 Sun Belt) and also broke a two-game losing streak in the series against the Warhawks (0-6, 0-3). Louisiana-Monroe stifled South Alabama's opening drive, holding the Jaguars to two yards before forcing a punt. The Warhawks offense advanced to the 14 before Rockette picked off Colby Suits and ran it back 95 yards the other way. The Pick-6 was South Alabama's first defensive touchdown since the 2018 season.

Desmond Trotter lofted a pass to Baker, who'd gotten behind two Louisiana-Monroe defenders, for an 80-yard completion and a 17-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Baker caught two more scoring passes after halftime. Trotter completed 8 of 12 passes for 184 yards. Baker notched his second 100-yard receiving game this season, third of his career. Suits finished 22-for-33 for 282 yards, his third 200-yard game this season, and a touchdown strike to Jordan Carroll as the Warhawks closed to 31-14 early in the fourth quarter. - AP College Football

  10/23/20 - Riley ColerSr/2021, South Alabama, 6-3, 240 (DS#21 OLB) + More +

South Alabama didn't force a turnover and had only one sack, so "havoc" plays are still somewhat lacking. However, when the game was on the line, the Jaguars made some big stops. Particularly important were linebacker Riley Cole snagging Texas State quarterback Brady McBride for a 3-yard loss on fourth-and-2 at the South Alabama 40 with the score tied 17-17 late in the third quarter, and cornerback Ryan Melton stringing out a wide running play on third-and-1 and forcing a punt with the Jaguars up seven with a little more than five minutes left in the game. Cole was particularly brilliant, piling up a career-high 15 tackles from his inside linebacker spot. - Birmingham News

  10/20/20 - Jake BentleyrSr/2022, South Alabama, 6-4, 225 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Whittingham got out in front of the elephant in the room, Bentley, long perceived as the eventual starter for the Nov. 7 opener, being voted a captain. "The first thing I'll say is don't read anything into Jake Bentley being a captain as far as winning the job," Whittingham said. "That's just what his peers think of him. Don't get me wrong, that's a positive thing, but that does not factor into our decision as far as who's going to be the guy." In Whittingham's defense, a quarterback being named a captain does not always indicate who the starter will be. Utah's recent history at the position is proof.

In 2016, Troy Williams was a captain. He started all 13 games at quarterback for Utah, throwing for 2,757 yards and 15 touchdowns as part of a 9-4 season. Late in training camp ahead of the 2017 season, Williams was again voted as a captain. Days later, sophomore Tyler Huntley was named the starting quarterback. Huntley went on to win 23 games as a starter, was named All-Pac-12 first team as a senior in 2019, and is currently on the Baltimore Ravens practice squad. Even if Bentley's captaincy is not a sure sign of who the starting quarterback will be, it is a clear sign of how much progress he has made in a short time. - Salt Lake Tribune

  10/19/20 - Riley ColerSr/2021, South Alabama, 6-3, 240 (DS#21 OLB) + More +

OCT 19 SUN BELT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Riley Cole, South Alabama,...Cole led all players with a career-best 15 total tackles, the most recorded by a defender in the Sun Belt this year, in the Jaguars' win over Texas State, which included recording a season-high-tying 1½ behind the line of scrimmage. Not only did the senior linebacker post an assisted stop for loss with the Bobcats facing fourth-and-two at the USA-37 and the score tied 17-17 late in the third quarter, he was credited with seven tackles in the final period as the Jaguars limited TXST to just three points while pulling ahead for the victory. Cole led a South defense that surrendered season-low totals in points, yards rushing and total yards allowed. - Sun Belt Football

Desmond Trotter tossed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Kawaan Baker with about seven minutes to play, helping South Alabama pull away in its Sun Belt Conference opener with a 30-20 victory over Texas State on Saturday. It was the Jaguars' first win at the new 24,450-seat Hancock Whitney Stadium, which was limited to 25 percent capacity. Trotter's TD pass gave the Jaguars a 27-20 lead. South Alabama (2-2, 1-0) forced a three-and-out on the Bobcats' ensuing series, and Diego Guajardo's 44-yard field goal with 1:09 remaining capped a 10-play, 4-minute drive.

Trotter was 18-of-22 passing for 187 yards. Baker finished with five catches for 43 yards. Carlos Davis ran for a season-best 113 yards for his third career 100-yard rushing game. Davis had a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Jalen Tolbert had nine receptions for 91 yards and caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Chance Lovertich that gave the Jaguars a 17-10 halftime lead. Brady McBride was 28 of 40 for 260 yards passing with a touchdown pass to lead Texas State (1-5, 1-2). - South Alabama/AP College Football

South Alabama quarterback Desmond Trotter continues to recover from an early-season shoulder injury, Jaguars head coach Steve Campbell said during a radio appearance Tuesday. Trotter has started both games this season for the Jaguars, who are 1-1 heading into their Sept. 24 home game with UAB. The sophomore from Birmingham injured his shoulder in the season-opening win over Southern Miss Sept. 3, then aggravated it in the fourth quarter of last Saturday's 27-24 loss to Tulane. Trotter was pulled from the Tulane game at the end of the first quarter in favor of junior-college transfer Chance Lovertich, who helped South Alabama take a 24-6 lead in the third quarter. After the Green Wave cut the lead to 24-19, Trotter re-entered the game at the start of the fourth quarter, but re-injured his shoulder and left the field again. - Birmingham News
