  Nick Starkel threw a pair of touchdown passes about three minutes apart and San Jose State beat Hawaii 17-13 on Saturday night in the Mountain West Conference opener for both teams. Kairee Robinson blocked a punt to set up a seven-play, 44-yard drive culminating when Starkel hit Isaiah Hamilton for a 13-yard score and, after a Hawaii three-and-out, he connected with Jermaine Braddock 1-yard TD with 2:23 left in the first half to give San Jose State the lead for good at 14-7. SJSU (2-1) has won nine conference games dating to a 38-35 loss to UNLV on November 23, 2019. Hawaii's Calvin Turner scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to open the scoring late in the first quarter and Matthew Shipley made field goals of 25 and 23 yards in the third quarter to make it 14-13.

Matt Mercurio kicked a 26-yard field goal to cap the scoring with 1:19 to play. Turner returned the kickoff the Hawaii 36 and the Rainbow Warriors moved to the SJSU 21 before time expired. San Jose State's Kyle Harmon was ejected after he was flagged for targeting early in the fourth quarter. The senior linebacker, an all-MWC selection last season, finished with nine tackles, five solo. Chevan Cordeiro completed 18 of 39 passes for 242 yards and added 39 yards rushing for Hawaii (1-3).   Chevan Cordeiro passed for three touchdowns, Dedrick Parson ran for two scores and Hawaii beat Portland State 49-35 on Saturday night in the first-ever football game played on school campus. The 9,000-seat retro-fitted Clarence T.C. Ching Complex will be the program's home until the New Aloha Stadium Entertainment District is completed. It was Hawaii's first home game outside of Aloha Stadium since Dec. 7, 1974 when the Rainbow Warriors hosted Arizona State at Honolulu Stadium, which had served as the team's home field from 1926-74.

Cordeiro threw touchdown passes to Nick Mardner and Jared Smart, Calvin scored on a wild winding 38-yard run - on which he crossed over into Hawaii territory before racing down the left sideline into the end zone - and Parson ran for a 17-yard TD as the Rainbow Warriors scored touchdowns on their first four possessions to take a 28-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Parson added a 2-yard TD run in the third quarter and Dae Dae Hunter, who finished with 128 yards rushing, scored on a 59-yard run in the fourth for Hawaii (1-1). Davis Alexander threw for 400 yards and three touchdowns for Portland State (0-1), but much of that came after the Rainbow Warriors had the game well in hand.   Playing in front of its home fans for the first time in 637 days, San Jose State didn't disappoint Saturday night in its season opener. The reigning Mountain West champion hit the ground running as the Spartans opened their season with a 45-14 rout of Southern Utah at CEFCU Stadium. The Spartans (1-0) found the end zone on each of their first five possessions, with quarterback Nick Starkel orchestrating a quick-strike attack. The senior threw for 394 yards and four touchdowns before being replaced to open the fourth quarter. He also ran it in from a yard out on the game's opening drive. Starkel spread the wealth by hooking up with 10 different targets, including TDs of 23 yards to Jermaine Braddock in the first quarter, explosive plays of 70 and 65 yards in the second quarter to tight end Sam Olson and Nevada transfer Charles Ross, respectively, plus a 14-yard floater to tight end Derrick Deese Jr. in the third quarter. - San Jose Mercury News

  Nick Starkel threw for four touchdowns and 394 yards and defending Mountain West Conference champion San Jose State kicked off the season with a 45-14 win over Southern Utah on Saturday night. Starkel, who finished 17-of-28 passing to nine receivers with one interception, also had a rushing touchdown to tie his career high with five total TDs. He finished 6 yards short of his fifth 400-yard passing game and a one TD throw shy of his career best. The Spartans outgained the Thunderbirds 534-250.

Starkel's 1-yard run opened the scoring and San Jose State led 21-0 after one quarter. Starkel threw three first-half TD passes, including a 70-yarder to Sam Olson and a 65-yarder to Charles Ross with the Spartans leading 35-14 at the break. Starkel's lone interception was a pick-6 returned by Kobe Singleton. Thunderbirds quarterback Justin Miller caught a TD pass off a trick play that came after a muffed punt by the Spartans, their first lost fumble since the 2019 season. The Spartans went undefeated in six MWC games, were 7-1 overall and finished 24th in the final Associated Press poll last season.   As the USC defense gathered on the sideline to prepare for the scrimmage at the Coliseum on Saturday, safety Chase Williams was in the middle of the huddle, barking encouragement to his teammates. It was all unprintable, both out of respect for a player delivering private remarks to his team and due to the language involved. But it was another sign of the leadership role that Williams has taken in his fourth season at USC. "I'm really just doing my best to spread energy and get everybody hyped up, get everybody locked in," Williams said after Wednesday's practice. "so I think us being in the circle, that's just a time when we can bring that upon our teammates and our brothers."

Williams has been a seldom-used reserve in his time at USC. Playing behind Talanoa Hufanga (now of the San Francisco 49ers) and Isaiah Pola-Mao, Williams had to bide his time. In 2020, all four of his tackles in the season came in one game. But after Hufanga's departure to the NFL, Williams has established himself as Pola-Mao's new running mate, both as a starter at safety and a leader in the locker room. "When those guys speak, it's almost more powerful than when coaches speak because they actually have been around these guys for longer than we have," defensive coordinator Todd Orlando said. "(Williams has) grown so much from when I first got here. I think he was just kind of feeling himself. But I think he understands what we're all about." - Orange County Register

  San Jose State University defensive end Viliami Fehoko and linebacker Alii Matau, returning starters from the Spartans' 2020 Mountain West championship football team, are two of the 63 players named to the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year watch list. The award is presented annually to the most outstanding college football player of Polynesian ancestry that epitomizes great ability and integrity. San Jose State is one of 31 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools with a representative on the 2021 watch list.

Fehoko was a first-team All-Mountain West selection and one of the most consistent and dynamic players in the conference and nationally. He led the conference in number of tackles for loss and tied for 17th nationally with his 12.5 total. The fourth-year Spartan registered at least 1.0 tackles for loss in each of the team's final seven games of the season.   Since its inception in 2012, San Jose State University quarterback Nick Starkel is the first and only Spartan eligible to be nominated for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award. The Texas-based college football award named after Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Earl Campbell calls for nominations of players on offense with high school or college ties to the state of Texas. The nominees also would possess integrity, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity which defined Campbell's football career from his high school days through a storied National Football League career.

Starkel finished his first San Jose State season leading the Spartans to a Mountain West championship, the school's first conference football title since 1991. He became the first known first-year player in a San Jose State uniform to be named a season team captain and completed 64.2 percent of his passes for 2,174 yards and 17 touchdowns in eight games. Returning for his final year of college football, Starkel starts the 2021 season as one of 53 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) players named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award preseason watch list.   Williams has been a seldom-used defensive back in his first three years at USC. He's always been regarded as a cerebral football player, but his body seemed to catch up to his mind during spring practices as he showed off a stronger frame and more physical play style.   For San Jose State University defensive lineman Cade Hall, appearing on a college football national watch list the past two weeks is a regular occurrence. The 2021 Bronko Nagurski Award presented by Lending Tree honors the best defensive player regardless of position in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) is the latest preseason recognition for Hall, named to several 2020 All-America teams.

Hall is the first San Jose State player since defensive end Travis Johnson in 2012 named to a Nagurski Award watch list. The award is named after Bronko Nagurski, an outstanding college football player at the University of Minnesota and later professionally with the Chicago Bears who is enshrined in the Pro Football and College Football halls of fame.   San Jose State University offensive tackle Jack Snyder is the first Spartan named an Outland Trophy watch list in more than 20 years. Presented since 1946, the annual award recognizes the most outstanding interior offensive lineman on either side of the football. Defensive ends are not eligible for this national award. Snyder, now in his sixth season with the Spartans, has started 40 games since the 2017 season.   San Jose State University defensive lineman Cade Hall is one of 90 players listed on the 2021 Bednarik Award watch list presented by the Maxwell Football Club. The Bednarik Award is awarded to college football's outstanding defensive player of the year and is named after College and Pro Football Hall of Fame standout Chuck Bednarik. Known as the "60-Minute Man," Bednarik played his college football at the University of Pennsylvania and professionally for the Philadelphia Eagles (1949-62).

Hall is coming off an All-America season in 2020 in which he finished second nationally among Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) players in quarterback sacks per game with 10.0 in seven contests and was 12th nationally with 12.0 tackles for loss.
