Nick Starkel threw two touchdown passes to Bailey Gaither and San Jose State beat UNLV 34-17 on Saturday night. SJSU (4-0, 4-0 Mountain West Conference) is off to its best start since opening the 1955 season with four consecutive wins. Starkel was 17-of-28 passing for 274 yards and Gaither finished with six receptions for 94 yards. Nick Nash had 94 yards rushing on eight carries for the Spartans. Nash is listed as the backup quarterback and led San Jose State to a win over San Diego State last week after Starkel left the game due to an undisclosed injury suffered on the first drive.

Gaither took a pop pass and raced past three defenders for a 41-yard touchdown to make it 7-3 with 6:11 left in the first quarter and the Spartans led the rest of the way. Gaither's diving 2-yard touchdown with 1:28 left in the first half gave San Jose State a 24-10 lead. Isaiah Hamilton made a diving catch for a 27-yard gain on a third-and-11 play and a pair of pass interference penalties against the Runnin' Rebels defense kept the drive alive for the Spartans. - AP College Football

San Jose State has the best corps of receivers in the Mountain West, and they've been adamant about proving it. Derrick Deese Jr., who finished with a game-high 76 receiving yards and five catches, not only had a one-handed grab, but another sideline tip-toe grab to live up to his Tony Toe Taps moniker. Tre Walker, who threw his hat in the ring for catch of the year last week against New Mexico, added to his highlight reel with a sideline tip-toe catch of his own. Walker finished with five catches for 70 yards. Bailey Gaither wasn't featured as often as previous weeks, but had three catches and a touchdown. "Whoever gets the ball, you know they're going to be able to do something with it," Deese Jr. said. "It could be Tre, me, Nash, anyone else. Anyone on the offense can make a play happen." - San Jose Mercury News

Chevan Cordeiro passed for four touchdowns - including a pair to Zion Bowens just 70 seconds apart - and ran for another score to help Hawaii beat New Mexico 39-33 on Saturday night. Cordeiro was 33-of-43 passing for 410 yards with two interceptions and scored on a 5-yard run in the first quarter. Nick Mardner had six receptions for 147 yards and a touchdown for Hawaii (2-1, 2-1 Mountain West Conference). Cordeiro rolled left to escape pressure and hit Calvin Turner, who evaded five would-be tacklers on his way to a 64-yard touchdown that gave Hawaii the lead for good early in the fourth quarter. Jared Smart made a leaping, contested catch in the corner of the end zone for the 2-point conversion that made it 36-30. Tevaka Tuioti was 17-of-31 passing for 181 yards and two TDs and added 71 yards rushing on five carries for New Mexico (0-2, 0-2). Nathaniel Jones and Bobby Cole each had 96 yards rushing.

George Steinkamp made the second of his four field goals to give the Lobos a 13-point lead early in the second quarter but Mardner's 42-yard touchdown catch made it 20-14 at halftime. Cordeiro hit Bowns for a 42-yard score on the opening drive of the second half and, after New Mexico went three-and-out, Bowers scored on a diving 40-yard catch to give the Rainbow Warriors a 28-20 lead with 11:55 left in the third quarter. A 28-yard TD run by Jones about two minutes later and a 24-yard field goal by Steinkamp early in the fourth quarter gave New Mexico a 30-28 lead. The game was played without fans due to COVID-19 restrictions in the island of Oahu. - AP College Football

Backup Nick Nash threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another score with 1:32 remaining, and San Jose State took advantage of three fourth-quarter turnovers to beat San Diego State 28-17 on Friday night. San Jose State has started a season 3-0 for the first time since 1982. SJSU trailed 17-14 early in the fourth quarter before its defense and special teams took over. Viliami Fehoko recovered a loose ball on a backward pass, Tre Jenkins made a bobbling interception in the end zone and Rico Tolefree secured a fumble on a punt return with 3:32 left.

Nash was 16-of-25 passing for 169 yards and he carried it 11 times for 53 yards. SJSU starting quarterback Nick Starkel had to be helped off the field on the first possession of the game after a hit by Cameron Thomas and did not return. Carson Baker passed for 261 yards for San Diego State (2-1, 2-1 Mountain West), and Greg Bell carried it 25 times for 109 yards and a touchdown. Tariq Thompson made his 12th career interception in the third quarter, moving into a tie for fifth in program history. Damontae Kazee (2013-16) holds the SDSU record with 17. - AP College Football

Starkel was nothing short of sensational in just his second game with San Jose State, completing 34 of 47 passes for 467 yards and career-high five touchdowns. His aerial assault on New Mexico's secondary came early and often. He connected with Walker for two explosive touchdowns of 37 and 26 yards, the latter of which is a candidate for catch of the year. He also found Isaiah Hamilton on a gorgeous 43-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Starkel's best throw of the night, however, was to Bailey Gaither. In the final seconds of the third quarter, Starkel threw an absolutely perfect spiral to Gaither in stride for a 69-yard touchdown, one that even had the coach in awe.

Starkel connected with 10 receivers, but Gaither and Walker were his two favorite targets. Gaither had 10 receptions for 208 receiving yards and a touchdown, and Walker had nine receptions for 107 yards and two touchdowns. The seldom-used Sam Olson had a one-yard touchdown as well. Starkel's quarterback rating of 190.9 was the second-best of his career. Coincidentally, Starkel's highest single-game quarterback rating also came against New Mexico, back in 2017 when he still played at Texas A&M, the team he played for before moving on to Arkansas. - San Jose Mercury News

Bailey Gaither tied his career high with eight receptions for 110 yards for the Spartans. Starkel completed 22 of 29 passes for 226 yards with one interception. Deese, a senior who went into the game with two career touchdowns, had TD catches of 7 and 11 yards, the latter of which gave San Jose State (1-0, 1-0) a 14-0 lead with 43 seconds left in the third quarter. Turner finished with 60 yards rushing, and Miles Reed added 109 yards on the ground on 21 carries for Hawaii. Eugene Ford had two interceptions and Jeremiah Pritchard one. Cordeiro had scoring runs of 20 and 3 yards as Hawaii built a 17-13 halftime lead. Turner's 2-yard touchdown run stretched Hawaii's lead to 24-13, and his 4-yard TD capped the scoring with about 5 minutes to play.   It would be hard to blame Trevon Sidney for being bitter...or worse. The Illinois wide receiver missed the final eight games of the 2019 season after suffering a leg injury at Minnesota last October, a 40-17 loss for the Illini that was part of a 2-4 start before a four-game win streak propelled the program to its first bowl game in five seasons. A bowl game the 5-foot-11, 180-pound Sidney didn't get to play in. Then, COVID-19 threatened his 2020 season. And his father, Carlos, suffered a stroke and was hospitalized. Lots of bad stuff. Still, there Sidney was on Friday, talking positively and openly about all that has happened. "I just love this game," Sidney said during a Zoom call with media members that cover Illinois. "I've given too much to it to let anything stop me. As long as I can keep going, as long as I can keep fighting, pushing through, I'm just going to keep playing."

The Southern Cal transfer finished his abbreviated first season at Illinois with 16 catches for 123 yards and a touchdown. When COVID-19 hit, it forced Sidney to return home to Pasadena, Calif. "I was kind of bummed," Sidney said. "Before it happened, we were rolling here. Everybody was getting bigger, faster, stronger. Things were looking really good." Until the shutdown. "I didn't have access to a gym," Sidney said. "I had to do everything at home." - News Gazette Tribune

The lone USC player to lend his name to a group of Pac-12 football players demanding change affirmed Wednesday he would be willing to join a boycott of the college football season if measures weren't taken to strengthen safety protections for players. But where some Pac-12 participants have taken a more hard-line stance on demands that also include wide-reaching social justice and economic reforms, Chase Williams explained his role in the cause was "more so [about] just pushing for a change, so that we can get back to football." Williams said he has had discussions with USC teammates about sitting out if the group's safety concerns aren't addressed. But the redshirt sophomore defensive back noted several times that they were "not expecting to boycott." "That's not what anybody wants," Williams said. "We want to come together and list demands that we feel like are safe for us." - Los Angeles Times

2020 WUERFFEL TROPHY PRESEASON WATCH LIST: Christian Webb, San Jose State, senior, linebacker,...Entering his third year with the Spartans, Webb is a first-year graduate student continuing his focus on communication studies, his undergraduate major. He's seen action as a linebacker and special teams defender. Webb is a 2018 and 2019 Mountain West All-Academic award winner in football. Yet, it is his service in the community that stands out among the Wuerffel Trophy's three components of academics, athletics, and community service.

Presently, Webb is serving an internship with the African American Community Service Agency (AACSA) of San Jose as the executive assistant to the executive director after a 2020 spring semester volunteering at the downtown San Jose headquarters two blocks from the university's main campus.
