  Walker Eget threw two touchdown passes to Danny Scudero, Steve Chavez-Soto added three rushing TDs, and San Jose State beat Hawaii 45-35 on Saturday night. San Jose State (2-5, 1-2 Mountain West Conference) has won five in a row against Hawaii. The Rainbow Warriors (6-3, 3-2) had their three-game win streak snapped. Landon Sims ran for a 2-yard TD late in the third quarter and Micah Alejado threw a 20-yard TD pass to Jackson Harris to make it 38-35 with 9:32 to play, but San Jose State answered with a seven-play, 75-yard drive that culminated with Chavez-Soto's third touchdown, a 1-yarder, gave the Spartans a 10-point lead with 5:41 to play.

Eget was 20-of-40 passing for 458 yards with no interceptions and Scudero had seven receptions for 215 yards. Scuduro, a sophomore transfer from Sacramento State who went into the game leading the nation in receiving yards (870) and receiving yards per game (124.3), has 10 touchdowns this season. Hawaii's Cam Barfield opened the scoring with a 1-yard run in the first quarter but San Jose State scored the next 21 points to take the lead for good. Chavez-Soto scored on runs of 10 and 20 yards and Lamar Radcliffe added a 2-yard TD run to give the Spartans a 14-point lead with 5:40 left in the second. Alejado hit Harris for a 68-yard touchdown that made it 21-14 about 1 1/2 minutes later before Eget threw a 50-yard TD pass to Scudero with 3:29 remaining in the first half and Mathias Brown kicked a 24-yard field goal in the closing seconds to make it 17-point game at the intermission. The Rainbow Warriors opened the second half with a nine-play, 70-yard drive that took five minutes off the clock and trimmed their deficit to 10 points when Alejado hit Sims for a 6-yard touchdown Three plays from scrimmage later, Eget threw a 62-yard TD pass to Scudero that gave San Jose State a 38-21 lead. - San Jose State/AP College Football

  Walker Eget threw for 327 yards and three touchdowns and San Jose State opened Mountain West Conference play with a 35-28 win over New Mexico on Friday night. Eget was on target all night with one incompletion on two dozen passes through three quarters and finished 26 for 30. Danny Scudero and Kyri Shoels were the main targets with seven receptions apiece for 151 and 81 yards, respectively, with Scudero scoring on a 70-yard play. New Mexico had a touchdown and field goal in the fourth quarter, but the Spartans erased the final 3:41 behind the running of Steve Chavez-Soto, a freshman in his first collegiate game. Replacing injured Lamar Radcliffe, who had 64 yards, Chavez Soto had 71 yards, 28 on the final possession, and two touchdowns.

Chavez-Soto's first touchdown and Eget's 11-yard toss to Matthew Coleman had the Spartans (2-3) up 14-0 less than a minute into the second quarter and the Lobos (3-2) never caught up. Chavez-Soto scored on a 10-yard run and Eget hit Leland Smith for an 8-yard touchdown in the third quarter to make it 35-17. Quarterback Jack Layne had the third of three New Mexico rushing touchdowns and he was 28-of-40 passing for 344 yards but threw three interceptions, two to Jalen Bainer.   Denis Lynch kicked a game-winning 48-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining to send San Jose State past Idaho, 31-28 on Saturday. The Spartans (1-2) avoided their fourth loss to an FCS team in program history, while the Vandals (2-2), ranked eighth in the FCS coaches poll, will go without an FBS win for the first time in three seasons. After trading touchdowns on four straight drives the San Jose State defense finally forced a three-and-out for the only punt of the second half. The Spartans then drove 31 yards in eight plays for the winning kick.

Jabari Bates had a career-high 131 rushing yards on 11 carries with an 87-yard scoring rush that put the Spartans on the board one snap after Idaho took a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter. The junior had never reached 100 rushing yards in his collegiate career. Walker Eget completed 13 of his 21 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown, and Danny Scudero hauled in six catches for 130 yards. Joshua Wood was 18-for-32 with 204 yards and two touchdowns for Idaho.   Nick Nash accounted for three touchdowns, Emmett Brown threw three touchdown passes and San Jose State defeated Sacramento State 42-24 on Thursday night in the debut of Ken Niumatalolo as coach of the Spartans. Nash caught 10 passes for 170 yards with two touchdowns. The former quarterback also threw one pass - a 26-yard touchdown to Jacob Stewart in the second quarter. Brown, a sophomore transfer from Washington State, completed 20 of 34 passes for 298 yards. Floyd Chalk IV, a junior transfer from Grambling State, had 87 yards rushing and scored twice for the Spartans. Sacramento State rolled up 160 yards in the first quarter, led 14-7 and had the ball inside the 10-yard line at the end of the period.   Former Oregon Ducks quarterback Jay Butterfield will continue his career in the Mountain West. Butterfield, who entered the transfer portal last month, announced his commitment to San Jose State on Saturday. The 6-foot-6, 216-pound Butterfield was Oregon's third-team quarterback each of the past two seasons. He completed a one-yard pass against Eastern Washington this season and went 2 of 3 for 22 yards against Stony Brook in 2021.

A four-star prospect out of Brentwood, Calif., Butterfield was ranked No. 147 overall and No. 5 among pro style quarterbacks in the 2020 recruiting class. He's the 12th former UO player to commit to or sign with a new team this offseason, joining Jackson LaDuke, Sean Dollars and Adrian Jackson Jr. (Nevada), Seven McGee (Jackson State), Justin Flowe (Arizona), Dawson Jaramillo (NC State), Moliki Matavao (UCLA), Bradyn Swinson (LSU), Brandon Buckner (MTSU), Byron Cardwell Jr. (Cal) and Bram Walden (Arizona State). - The Oregonian
