Tyrell Shavers just needed a chance. After a slew of injuries and a brief split between baseball and football slowed his ability to shine on the gridiron at Alabama, the former top-100 recruit is slated for a major role at Mississippi State this fall should the season go on as scheduled. "We are excited to add a tremendous talent like Tyrell to our receiving corps," MSU coach Mike Leach said in a news release in June. "Tyrell graduated from the University of Alabama in three years and has two years of eligibility remaining. We look forward to welcoming him to Starkville as we prepare for a big season ahead." Committing to MSU on June 8, Shavers instantly became the Bulldogs' tallest receiving threat, standing 6-foot-6 and weighing 205 pounds. And while his sample size at Alabama was small -- one reception for 20 yards and one carry for 14 yards last season -- there's reason to believe he'll thrive in coach Mike Leach's air raid offense.

When he played for Lewisville High School in the greater Dallas area, Shavers' high school numbers suffered as much from poor quarterback play as the double- and triple-teams he saw on a weekly basis. Never one to get too high or too low, Shavers boasted a generally calm demeanor despite the errant passes he saw throughout his prep days, finishing with 27 receptions for 397 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior. "If he could get to it, he was going to catch it," Shavers' high school coach, Gregg Miller, told The Dispatch. "Our quarterbacks we had sometimes threw it out of bounds or threw it onto the bleachers, but he was definitely a kid that everybody that we played, you better find a way to cover that kid, or he's going to beat you." - The Dispatch

Mike Leach secured another target for the Air Raid offense he brought to Mississippi State. Former Alabama wide receiver Tyrell Shavers announced via Twitter Monday his decision to join Leach and the Bulldogs in Starkville. Shavers, a graduate transfer who is eligible to play immediately, has two years of eligibility remaining. Shavers didn't play much in his first two seasons in Tuscaloosa. He played in all 13 games last year as a redshirt sophomore. A regular contributor on special teams, Shavers blocked a punt and returned it two yards for a touchdown against Texas A&M.

On offense, Shavers only recorded one catch for 20 yards and a rushing attempt for 14 yards. The latter came against Mississippi State at Davis Wade Stadium. Shavers arrived at Alabama in 2017 as a highly ranked wide receiver recruit. He came out of Lewisville High School in north Texas as the ninth best player in the state according to 247Sports. He was a unanimous four-star recruit. At 6-foot-6, Shavers will be Costello's tallest target at the receiver position. Shavers joins senior Osirus Mitchell (6-foot-5) and incoming junior college transfers Malik Heath (6-foot-3) and Caleb Ducking (6-foot-5) as intriguing outside options for Costello. Heath was the No. 2 junior college wide receiver in the class of 2020. - The Clarion Ledger

Alabama is set to lose one of its veteran wide receivers. Redshirt junior Tyrell Shavers entered the NCAA transfer portal Tuesday, AL.com has learned. A former top-100 overall recruit, Shavers was expected to be part of the competition for the Crimson Tide's No. 3 wide receiver job. Instead, the Texas native will continue his college career elsewhere. While Shavers played in all 28 games for the Tide over the last two seasons, his playing time on offense came strictly as a backup or in mop-up situations. - Birmingham News

San Diego State didn't need to do a nationwide search to locate a punter to replace Brandon Heicklen. Scouring the city was more than sufficient. Eight miles from the SDSU campus, Tanner Kuljian has been booming punts the past two years at USD. A graduate transfer from Temecula, Kuljian has accepted a scholarship from SDSU to handle the punting chores during his last year of eligibility. "I'm really excited for this," Kuljian said. "San Diego State has had really good specialists the past few years. I'm blessed to be part of that bunch now. I think I'm as ready as I've ever been." Kuljian earned Pioneer League Special Teams Player of the Year last season after averaging a league-high 40.6 yards a punt. Nineteen of his 38 punts were fielded for fair catches. Twelve ended up inside the 20-yard line. Six were for more than 50 yards. - San Diego Union Tribune

Could another football team from San Diego make itself at home in Carson? It's one possibility San Diego State - which is growing increasingly frustrated by the process of acquiring the Mission Valley land from the city - says it plans to investigate if it is unable to complete its purchase in a timely manner. John David Wicker, SDSU's director of athletics, said he would explore opportunities throughout Southern California for the 2021 football season before committing to play again in aging SDCCU Stadium.

The largest football venues in San Diego besides the Mission Valley stadium are at Southwestern College, Mesa College and USD. Each seats approximately 6,000 people, roughly 25 percent of what the Aztecs averaged for their six 2019 home games. This explains widening the search to Orange County and Los Angeles, which include several stadiums that would meet the Aztecs' needs. That includes Carson's Dignity Health Sports Park, which hosted the Chargers the past three seasons after the NFL franchise relocated from San Diego. - San Diego Union Tribune

Virginia Tech quarterback Braxton Burmeister had to hit pause last fall and now he's had to do it again. The Oregon transfer spent a couple weeks in August competing for the starting job before moving over to the scout team. He was able to get real practice reps again during prep for the Belk Bowl, but he wasn't allowed to travel with the team for the final week of practice in Charlotte. His role on the scout team didn't afford him many opportunities to showcase all of his teammates, but Tech coaches and players raved about his athleticism, which was put to good use leading up to the Virginia game when Burmeister was tasked with simulating Bryce Perkins.

"Braxton when we were uncertain about his eligibility he was in there taking reps headed into the season and was effective," Fuente said last week. "He was in the process of doing a really good job then we kind of got word about how that appeal was going to turn out and he had to migrate towards the scout team stuff and did a great job with the scout team all season long. In bowl prep, we had a chance to put him back in there to run our stuff and he did a good job." Fuente was going to let Tech's quarterbacks compete for the starting job this spring, but those plans are on hold with the COVID-19 outbreak forcing the program to cancel the entirety of spring camp. - Roanoke Times

2020 NFL COMBINE INVITE: Keith Ismael, C, San Diego State,...A member of the Outland Trophy Watch List (top interior lineman) and Rimington Trophy Watch List (nation's most outstanding center), Ismael has allowed just one sack in 366 passing plays (0.27 pct.) and has only recorded three penalties in 881 snaps (0.34 pct.). Ismael is just the second SDSU offensive lineman to make a pair of MW first teams (also Nico Siragusa, 2015-16) and the only one to make three first or second teams. - San Diego State Football
