Jordan Byrd had a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, BJ Busbee scored on a 90-yard punt return, and San Diego State beat Colorado State 29-17 on Saturday. Jordan Brookshire was 14-of-22 passing for 130 yards and a TD and added a team-high 38 yards rushing for San Diego State (4-3, 4-2 Mountain West Conference). The Aztecs never faced a third down during a 12-play, 81-yard drive capped by Brookshire's 8-yard touchdown pass to Jesse Matthews with 4:41 left in the first quarter that made it 7-0 and gave SDSU the lead for good.

Robert Liss made a 43-yard field goal to make it 7-3 early in the second quarter, but Byrd caught the ensuing kickoff near the right sideline, cut back to the left and raced untouched down the left side and, after Colorado State went three-and-out, Busbee's punt return gave the Aztecs a 20-3 lead with 10:24 left in the first half. Marcus McElroy had 10 carries for 50 yards and two second-quarter touchdowns for Colorado State (1-3, 1-3). - San Diego State/AP College Football

Greg Bell ran for a career-high 160 yards and two touchdowns and San Diego State defeated Hawaii 34-10 on Saturday. Bell became the first player in school history to open his SDSU career with four consecutive 100-yard rushing games. The Nebraska transfer's big day included a career-long 62-yard score. The Aztecs (3-1, 3-1 Mountain West), coming in ranked seventh in the FBS at 265 yards rushing per game, kept their offense on the ground with 326 of their 356 total yards. Carson Baker was only 4-of-13 passing for 30 yards and two interceptions but the Aztecs still snapped a two-game losing streak to the Rainbow Warriors (2-2, 2-2).

Jordan Byrd went around the left side for a 61-yard score before Bell added his 62-yarder up the middle for a 14-0 first-quarter lead. A fumbled punt set up Bell's 3-yard score and Segun Olubi returned an interception 29 yards for a 28-0 halftime lead. The Aztecs had seven sacks led by Jonah Tavai with two. Chevan Cordeiro threw for 209 yards with a 75-yard score to Calvin Turner in the fourth quarter. He was intercepted once. Turner had 116 yards receiving. Jason Shelley connected with Deven Thompkins on a 37-yard scoring pass on the last play of the first half for Utah State (0-2, 0-2) to make it 10-7 but Greg Bell's 10-yard TD run capped a 10-play, 75-yard drive to open the second half and was the first of 28 consecutive points for SDSU. SDSU had 570 total yards, including 407 rushing. The San Diego State defense limited the Aggies to just 215 yards and forced three Utah State turnovers. - San Diego State/AP College Football

An additional three players have left the Mississippi State program during the buildup to its game against Alabama, including a former Crimson Tide wide receiver. Tyrell Shavers, who transferred from Alabama to Mississippi State earlier this year, and reserve defensive linemen Tre Lawson and Jamari Stewart are all no longer with the team, according to head coach Mike Leach. Shavers had nine catches for 107 yards and a touchdown through the Bulldogs' first four games. It's the continuation of a rough past week in Starkville. Star running back Kylin Hill is expected to opt out of the rest of the season. In addition, three players have already entered the transfer portal since last Tuesday and now there are at least three more who will seemingly do so in the near future. It all comes with Mississippi State on a three-game losing streak since its season-opening win over LSU. "I'd surprised if we don't lose more," Leach said."...If you're stunned or nervous, you better brace yourself because we might lose more." - Birmingham News

The mid-season exodus continues at Mississippi State. After quarterback Garrett Shrader announced his intention to transfer last week, a source confirmed to The Dispatch that junior signal caller Jalen Mayden and redshirt freshman Nick Pendley have entered the transfer portal. Paul Jones of 247Sports first reported the news. Mayden's departure is the most high-profile of the most recent exports. A former four-star recruit in the class of 2018, he was rated the No. 361 recruit in the class and the No. 16 dual-threat quarterback according to the 247Sports Composite. "In Texas he's a great athlete," Mayden's high school coach Red Behrens told The Dispatch over the summer. "And I know y'all have a lot of athletes in Mississippi, but he was a very athletic kid for us and made some great plays with both his legs and his arm." - The Dispatch

SDSU linebacker Caden McDonald was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Aztecs with 2 1/2 sacks among his eight tackles. McDonald, a junior from Haslet, Texas, appreciated the honor, but wasn't satisfied with the performance. "This is just a good first game for us, but we have a lot more to improve on and get better on, that's for sure," McDonald said. "As a defense, we want to not let them score any points. Six points is too much for us, (186) yards in total offense is too much for us as well. We want to keep them to zero on all of that..."Anything more than zero is not acceptable for our defense. We want to be lockdown all the time and shut down everybody we play. This defense has the mindset to be the best in the country week in and week out." - San Diego Union Tribune

Running back is again one of the deepest positions on the team. Senior Chase Jasmin (79 carries, 366 yards, 4 TDs) and juniors Chance Bell (89-384, 2 TDs), Jordan Byrd (78-355, 3 TDs) and Kaegun Williams (30-110) each showed glimpses of promise a year ago. In fact, Byrd rushed for a game-high 139 yards in the 2019 New Mexico Bowl and can be a game-changer with his breakaway speed. But the unknown at the position, the intriguing X Factor, is senior Greg Bell. The 6-foot, 205-pound Bell transferred in a year ago but missed the 2019 season because of a freak eye injury suffered in an off-campus training session before fall camp opened.

Bell originally committed to SDSU out of Bonita Vista High, where he rushed for 2,632 yards, 34 touchdowns in 2015 and led the Barons to the school's first section championship. He was a non-qualifier out of high school, went to Arizona Western junior college for two years and then Nebraska, where he started the first three games of the 2018 season for the Cornhuskers. Bell carried 35 times for 173 yards (4.9 yards/carry) before deciding to return home for family reasons. Bell has been waiting two years for this moment. Let's see what he does with it. - San Diego Union Tribune

The 6-foot, 205-pound Bell is a Bonita Vista High graduate who joined the team a year ago after transferring from Nebraska, but he missed the 2019 season following a freak eye injury suffered during a preseason, off-campus workout. "He will be an impact," Hoke said. "His work ethic during this whole COVID pandemic, he would send me video of himself working out all the time. "When you look at him physically and all those things, we're excited what he's going to bring to the table and bring to us."

Bell has 10-35 pounds more on his frame than the other backs. In addition to his abilities as a rusher, Bell also has impressed Hoke with his pass-catching and blocking skills. "I preface all of this, we haven't gotten to inside drill and all that stuff kind of stuff yet," Hoke said, adding, "Whoever that (starter) is, you want to have one (workhorse). But you want to be able to have enough other guys who can do special things...For us, it's an advantage to have a group of guys like we have because they bring that." - San Diego Union Tribune

The summer has proved a learning process for Alabama transfer receiver Tyrell Shavers. Through fall camp's early days, the former top-100 recruit sounded more athletic than talented in talking to coaches and teammates. Yet now heading into MSU's first official game week, Shavers finds his name atop the receiver depth chart. Edging out senior Osirus Mitchell, MSU's leading receiver a season ago, Shavers' listing as the No. 1 "Z" receiver is as much a lesson in persistence as it is simply names on a sheet of paper. Throughout camp, flashes of the Dallas-area product's talent leaked through marketing videos, though one would have to examine the clips like the Zapruder film to draw much from them. That said, should he have found a command of an offense he's only been a part of for mere months, there's reason to believe Shavers can stretch the field athletically in a way MSU desperately lacked a season ago and will be necessitated in Leach's system. "I do think Shavers has been more consistent lately," Leach said. "But you know, we're gonna play with eight receivers and roll them in. So Osirus is right in the thick of it. I mean, it could say 'or,' but I do think Shavers has practiced more consistently lately." - The Dispatch

Virginia Tech quarterback Braxton Burmeister has experience displacing a returning starter. He got one step closer to doing it again on Wednesday when coach Justin Fuente announced Burmeister and Hendon Hooker will both play in the opener against Virginia on Sept. 19 (barring any COVID-19-related developments). Hooker will open the game at quarterback, but Fuente said Burmeister will get a chance to prove what he can do. Burmeister's former coaches and teammates wouldn't be surprised if he ends up as Tech's full-time starter in the coming weeks. Those close to the quarterback attribute his rise through the ranks to a relentless work ethic and competitiveness. He was looking up the depth chart at an experienced senior starter going into his freshman year at La Jolla Country Day. The team's then coach Jeff Hutzler approached the competition the same way Fuente does. "We were going to let the best player win the job," Hutzler said.

Hutzler said Burmeister had a "deadly" combination of size and speed, and could make any throw the coaching staff asked of him. The quarterback matched those natural abilities with a dedication to his craft that earned him the job. "In summer camp before even playing a game, he was asking me about how to rally the team," Hutzler said. "He's in my office having conversations about how to show appreciation to the offensive line. He's asking those kind of questions, which I think goes to show talent-aside what kind of young man he is." - Roanoke Times

2020 PRESEASON PAUL HORNUNG AWARD WATCH LIST: Jordan Byrd, SDSU,...An Albuquerque, N.M., native, Byrd is coming off a solid 2019 season when he led the Aztecs in all-purpose yards (831), all-purpose yards per game (69.2), punt return yards (93), punt return average (7.8) and kick return yards (319). Byrd also rushed 78 times for 355 yards (4.6 avg.) and three touchdowns, including a career-high 139 yards against Central Michigan in the 2019 New Mexico Bowl en route to sharing most valuable offensive player honors of the game with Jesse Matthews. Byrd, who also had 16 catches a year ago for 64 yards (4.0 avg.), has also been named a preseason third-team all-Mountain West pick as a kick returner by both Athlon Sports and Phil Steele Magazine. For his career, Byrd has appeared in 23 games since arriving to campus as a true freshman in 2018, amassing 1,128 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns. - San Diego State Football
