  SEPT 19 WAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Zach Hrbacek, R-Fr., RB, Sam Houston (Sept. 19),...Hrbacek, a sophomore running back, recorded his first career collegiate 100-yard rushing performance for Sam Houston in a 27-17 win against Texas A&M-Commerce on Sept. 17. Hrbacek led all players with 131 yards on the ground on just 19 carries, averaging 6.9 yards per rush to go along with a 7-yard rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Hrbacek, who lost just one rushing yard from scrimmage in the game, added a 20-yard kickoff return to open the contest. - WAC Football

  Dezmon Jackson ran untouched into the end zone from a yard out with 35 seconds left to give Sam Houston a 17-16 win over Stephen F. Austin on Saturday in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Stephen F. Austin (2-3, 0-1) looked to have pulled off the win by forcing an incomplete pass on fourth-and-goal but an offsides penalty gave Sam Houston (2-2, 1-0) another opportunity. Trae Self pushed Stephen F. Austin to its 40 on the final possession before Trey Smith's interception ended it.

The Lumberjacks jumped out to a 13-0 lead late in the second quarter with a pair of Chris Campos field goals and Self's 85-yard touchdown pass to Moe Wedman. But before the half ended, Sam Houston's Donovan Adkins blocked a punt attempt, scooped up the ball and ran five yards to the Lumberjack 7. On the next play, Keegan Shoemaker lofted a touchdown pass to Noah Smith to get the Bearkats to 10-7 at halftime. It was the 11th straight win for Sam Houston in the 96th meeting of the Battle of Piney Woods. - AP College Football

  Zach Hrbacek rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown, backup quarterback Keegan Shoemaker led a second-half comeback and Sam Houston beat Texas A&M-Commerce 27-17 on Saturday night. Sam Houston starting quarterback Jordan Yates threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown as Texas A&M-Commerce pulled within 10-7 in the third quarter. Sam Houston opted for Shoemaker on the next drive and he responded by leading three scoring drives.

Cody Chrest made a one-handed catch in the corner of the end zone to stretch the Sam Houston lead to 17-7. After TAMUC trimmed it to 17-10, Chris Hicks returned the ensuing kickoff 46 yards and Hrbacek scored five plays later. Hrbacek set up the final score with 41 more yards on the ground, leading to a 46-yard field goal by Seth Morgan for Sam Houston (1-2). Texas A&M-Commerce (1-2) managed just 84 yards of total offense in the first half and got its first offensive touchdown with 31 seconds left in the game. - Sam Houston/AP College Football

  University of Houston running back Alton McCaskill is doubtful to play this season after suffering a torn knee ligament in spring practice, coach Dana Holgorsen said Thursday. Speaking during the American Athletic Conference's media day, Holgorsen said McCaskill was recently cleared to begin running, but said it was premature to put any timetable on a possible return. "That conversation won't even be had for months and months," Holgorsen said. "Just being smart about it, I doubt it." McCaskill tore the ACL in his left knee during the final week of spring practice. He underwent successful surgery in April. "That's not my call," Holgorsen continued when asked about a timetable for McCaskill's return. "If I wanted that to happen and the doctors say no, then the doctors are going to win out for sure. We're interested in what's best for Alton and his future." McCaskill had 961 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns as a freshman last season to earn AAC's Rookie of the Year. - Houston Chronicle

  2022 PRESEASON JIM THORPE AWARD WATCHLIST: CJ Brown, Northern Illinois, So.,...As a second-year freshman in 2021, safety CJ Brown (5-11, 194) was named to Phil Steele's All-MAC first team and was an honorable mention choice by Pro Football Network. He assumed the starting role at safety after Devin Lafayette went down with a season-ending injury in the season opener at Georgia Tech. Developed into a first team All-MAC selection and led the Huskies in tackles on the year with 109. Finished the season ranked 10th in the MAC in tackles per game (7.8) and his 61 solo stops were 14 more than the next highest Huskie. Recorded four tackles for loss, intercepted one pass and broke up another. Named the Defensive Player of the Game in the MAC Championship game win over Kent State (12-4) after leading NIU with 10 tackles, including a sack and tackle for loss, breaking up a pass and returning his first career interception 26 yards for a touchdown to give NIU a 24-3 lead late in the third quarter.
