  WEEK 1 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hunter Watson, Sam Houston, Jr., QB, Celina, Texas,...Watson earned the start in the season opener and showed why, staying in control of the game throughout Saturday evening in leading the Kats to a 34-14 win at Rice. The transfer from Iowa Western CC completed 16-27 passes for 229 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions while also adding a team-best 57 yards on the ground. On just his second pass, he hit Qua'vez Humphreys for a 67-yard touchdown, and Watson also connected on an explosive scoring play with a 32-yard strike to Ife Adeyi. - Conference USA Football

The junior kept the early momentum in the Bearkats' favor in the first quarter when he made it a 17-0 lead by connecting on a 52-yard field goal on his first career field-goal attempt before later adding a 26-yarder. His 52-yard make tied for the seventh-longest field goal of any FBS kicker in the opening week and matched the sixth-longest field-goal made in program history. - Conference USA Football

  Hunter Watson threw two touchdown passes and Sam Houston scored twice in 50 seconds to defeat Rice 34-14 in a season-opening matchup on Saturday night. It was just the Bearkats' second win over the Owls in 18 meetings The last meeting was in 1993 and Sam Houston's earlier win came in 1939. Watson connected with Qua'Vez Humphreys for a 67-yard touchdown along the right sideline just over five minutes into the game. Two snaps later David Fisher picked off E.J. Warner's short pass and took it 30 yards for a 14-0 lead.

Warner connected with Kobie Campbell for a 22-yard touchdown, but Watson got that back just before halftime with a 32-yard pass to Ife Adeyi, making it 24-7. The Bearkats opened the second half with a 76-yard drive, capped by John Gentry's 1-yard run. Watson finished 16 of 27 for 229 yards passing and was the leading rusher with 57 yards. The Bearkats had 407 yards. Warner was 27 of 44 for 227 with two interceptions. Rice had 274 yards. - AP College Football

  2022 WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Kavian Gaither, So., LB, Sam Houston,...Gaither, a sophomore linebacker, led the WAC with 8.8 tackles per game and was fifth in the conference with 79 total tackles across just nine games played. Gaither added 3.0 sacks, 12.0 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries to his 2022 stat line.   Zach Hrbacek rushed for an 80-yard touchdown on the second play of the game, Seth Morgan made four field goals, and Sam Houston eased by Tarleton 40-21 on Saturday. Sam Houston led 20-7 at halftime after intercepting Beau Allen three times. Dezmon Jackson added an 18-yard touchdown run early in the fourth for a 30-7 lead. Sam Houston DB Da'Veawn Armstead had back-to-back highlight plays to end the half. His strip sack with 53 seconds left ended in a 28-yard loss for Tarleton and he intercepted a tipped pass on the next play. Keegan Shoemaker was 16 of 35 for 182 yards for Sam Houston (5-2, 3-0 Western Athletic Conference). Morgan made field goals of 23, 52, 32 and 49 yards.   Keegan Shoemaker threw a touchdown pass, Seth Morgan kicked three field goals and Sam Houston held off Utah Tech 18-13 on Saturday night. Morgan's first field goal was a 20-yarder midway through the second quarter and tied the game 3-3 at halftime. Morgan connected from 31 and 28 yards out on back-to-back third-quarter drives for Sam Houston (4-2, 2-0 Western Athletic Conference) before Shoemaker hit Al'Vonte Woodard for an 8-yard touchdown with 53 seconds left in the period for an 18-3 advantage. Connor Brooksby's second field goal and Victor Gabalis' 10-yard touchdown pass to Joey Hobert got Utah Tech (1-6, 0-3) within five points with 6:33 left to play. But the Trailblazers turned the ball over on downs with 28 seconds remaining on their next possession after the Bearkats sacked Gabalis on back-to-back plays. Shoemaker completed 23 of 40 passes for 278 yards with an interception for Sam Houston. He also rushed for 70 yards on eight carries. Cody Chrest had 10 receptions for 154 yards.   OCT 3 WAC SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Donovan Adkins, So., DB, Sam Houston (Oct. 3),...Adkins, a sophomore defensive back, helped turn the tide for Sam Houston in The Battle of the Piney Woods with the Bearkats facing a 13-0 deficit with just under two minutes left in the first half. Adkins broke through and blocked an SFA punt deep in Lumberjack territory, recovering the ball himself and returning the block to the 7-yard line to set up the first touchdown of the game for Sam Houston. It was the first punt block by Sam Houston since the semifinal round against James Madison in the spring 2021 FCS Playoffs. - WAC Football

  SEPT 19 WAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Zach Hrbacek, R-Fr., RB, Sam Houston (Sept. 19),...Hrbacek, a sophomore running back, recorded his first career collegiate 100-yard rushing performance for Sam Houston in a 27-17 win against Texas A&M-Commerce on Sept. 17. Hrbacek led all players with 131 yards on the ground on just 19 carries, averaging 6.9 yards per rush to go along with a 7-yard rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Hrbacek, who lost just one rushing yard from scrimmage in the game, added a 20-yard kickoff return to open the contest. - WAC Football

  Dezmon Jackson ran untouched into the end zone from a yard out with 35 seconds left to give Sam Houston a 17-16 win over Stephen F. Austin on Saturday in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Stephen F. Austin (2-3, 0-1) looked to have pulled off the win by forcing an incomplete pass on fourth-and-goal but an offsides penalty gave Sam Houston (2-2, 1-0) another opportunity. Trae Self pushed Stephen F. Austin to its 40 on the final possession before Trey Smith's interception ended it.

The Lumberjacks jumped out to a 13-0 lead late in the second quarter with a pair of Chris Campos field goals and Self's 85-yard touchdown pass to Moe Wedman. But before the half ended, Sam Houston's Donovan Adkins blocked a punt attempt, scooped up the ball and ran five yards to the Lumberjack 7. On the next play, Keegan Shoemaker lofted a touchdown pass to Noah Smith to get the Bearkats to 10-7 at halftime.   Zach Hrbacek rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown, backup quarterback Keegan Shoemaker led a second-half comeback and Sam Houston beat Texas A&M-Commerce 27-17 on Saturday night. Sam Houston starting quarterback Jordan Yates threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown as Texas A&M-Commerce pulled within 10-7 in the third quarter. Sam Houston opted for Shoemaker on the next drive and he responded by leading three scoring drives.

Cody Chrest made a one-handed catch in the corner of the end zone to stretch the Sam Houston lead to 17-7. After TAMUC trimmed it to 17-10, Chris Hicks returned the ensuing kickoff 46 yards and Hrbacek scored five plays later. Hrbacek set up the final score with 41 more yards on the ground, leading to a 46-yard field goal by Seth Morgan for Sam Houston (1-2).
