  WEEK 12 CONFERENCE USA SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Christian Pavon, Sam Houston - Sr. - K - Willis, Texas,...Pavon was huge in the Bearkats' 26-23 win over Delaware on Saturday, the first win of the season in CUSA play for Sam Houston (2-8, 1-5 CUSA). He nailed 4-5 field goal tries, hitting each of his first four - including a pair of 48-yarders - to give Kats points when they needed them most. He hit a 33-yarder on the last play of the first half and then three more in the second half to finish one made kick short of the program record. It was only the third time since 1991 a Bearkat kicker has made four or more field goals in a single game. - Conference USA Football

  Landon Brown rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns to help Sam Houston hold on for a 26-23 victory over Delaware on Saturday night. Nick Minicucci scored on a 7-yard run late in the first quarter to give Delaware (5-5, 3-4 Conference USA) a 7-0 lead and Nate Reed's 37-yard field goal made it 10-0 midway through the second. Brown had a 2-yard touchdown run for Sam Houston (2-8, 1-5) and Christian Pavon kicked a 33-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to tie it 10-all. Brown had a 62-yard touchdown run in between 33- and 48-yard fields goals by Pavon and the Bearkats led 23-10 after three quarters.

Pavon kicked another 48-yarder before Viron Ellison Jr. ran it in from 3 yards out for the Blue Hens to cut it to 26-16. Delaware closed within three on Minicucci's 26-yard touchdown pass to Max Patterson with 2:36 to go. The Blue Hens recovered an onside kick at the Sam Houston 43 and Minicucci drove them to the 12. Dylan Frazier sacked Minicucci for a 7-yard loss on second down, and Minicucci failed to connect on third down. Reed missed a potential tying 36-yard field goal with 21 seconds left to end the rally. Landon Locke completed 16 of 38 passes for 213 yards for Sam Houston. Brown did his damage on 10 carries. Minicucci finished with 338 yards on 24-for-36 passing with an interception.   Mabrey Mettauer threw a touchdown pass and the Sam Houston special teams scored two second-half touchdowns to help the Bearkats beat Oregon State 21-17 on Saturday night and snap an eight-game losing streak. Sam Houston (1-8) avoided the first 0-9 start to a season in program history and Bearkats first-year coach Phil Longo got his first win as a head coach since Nov. 12, 2005, when he was at La Salle.

Mettauer hit Chris Reed for a 35-yard touchdown with 1:14 left in the second quarter that trimmed Sam Houston's deficit to 17-7 at halftime. Tim Burns Jr. returned the opening kickoff of the second half 98 yards for a touchdown and Lyric Smith blocked a punt that Brody Henderson scooped up and ran 31 yards for a TD that gave the Bearkats a 21-17 lead with 8:29 to play. Sam Houston had just eight first downs and was outgained 474-157 total yards. Anthony Hankerson had 33 carries for 166 yards and two touchdowns for Oregon State (2-7) and David Wells Jr. had nine receptions for 112 yards.   WEEK 1 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hunter Watson, Sam Houston, Jr., QB, Celina, Texas,...Watson earned the start in the season opener and showed why, staying in control of the game throughout Saturday evening in leading the Kats to a 34-14 win at Rice. The transfer from Iowa Western CC completed 16-27 passes for 229 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions while also adding a team-best 57 yards on the ground. On just his second pass, he hit Qua'vez Humphreys for a 67-yard touchdown, and Watson also connected on an explosive scoring play with a 32-yard strike to Ife Adeyi. - Conference USA Football

The junior kept the early momentum in the Bearkats' favor in the first quarter when he made it a 17-0 lead by connecting on a 52-yard field goal on his first career field-goal attempt before later adding a 26-yarder. His 52-yard make tied for the seventh-longest field goal of any FBS kicker in the opening week and matched the sixth-longest field-goal made in program history. - Conference USA Football

  Hunter Watson threw two touchdown passes and Sam Houston scored twice in 50 seconds to defeat Rice 34-14 in a season-opening matchup on Saturday night. It was just the Bearkats' second win over the Owls in 18 meetings The last meeting was in 1993 and Sam Houston's earlier win came in 1939. Watson connected with Qua'Vez Humphreys for a 67-yard touchdown along the right sideline just over five minutes into the game. Two snaps later David Fisher picked off E.J. Warner's short pass and took it 30 yards for a 14-0 lead.

Warner connected with Kobie Campbell for a 22-yard touchdown, but Watson got that back just before halftime with a 32-yard pass to Ife Adeyi, making it 24-7. The Bearkats opened the second half with a 76-yard drive, capped by John Gentry's 1-yard run. Watson finished 16 of 27 for 229 yards passing and was the leading rusher with 57 yards. The group includes eight offensive linemen including all five starters and two, in Cam'Ron Johnson and Patrick Paul, who were 2022 First-Team All-Conference honorees. The group will be tutored by first-year Run Game Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach Eman Naghavi who joined the Cougars in January following a decorated season in the same position at Tulane. After missing the entire 2022 season due to injury, Houston welcomes back running back Alton McCaskill IV who set the program's true freshman rushing touchdowns record in 2021. Gaither added 3.0 sacks, 12.0 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries to his 2022 stat line. Sam Houston led 20-7 at halftime after intercepting Beau Allen three times. Dezmon Jackson added an 18-yard touchdown run early in the fourth for a 30-7 lead. Sam Houston DB Da'Veawn Armstead had back-to-back highlight plays to end the half. His strip sack with 53 seconds left ended in a 28-yard loss for Tarleton and he intercepted a tipped pass on the next play. Keegan Shoemaker was 16 of 35 for 182 yards for Sam Houston (5-2, 3-0 Western Athletic Conference). Morgan made field goals of 23, 52, 32 and 49 yards.   Keegan Shoemaker threw a touchdown pass, Seth Morgan kicked three field goals and Sam Houston held off Utah Tech 18-13 on Saturday night. Morgan's first field goal was a 20-yarder midway through the second quarter and tied the game 3-3 at halftime. Morgan connected from 31 and 28 yards out on back-to-back third-quarter drives for Sam Houston (4-2, 2-0 Western Athletic Conference) before Shoemaker hit Al'Vonte Woodard for an 8-yard touchdown with 53 seconds left in the period for an 18-3 advantage. Connor Brooksby's second field goal and Victor Gabalis' 10-yard touchdown pass to Joey Hobert got Utah Tech (1-6, 0-3) within five points with 6:33 left to play. But the Trailblazers turned the ball over on downs with 28 seconds remaining on their next possession after the Bearkats sacked Gabalis on back-to-back plays. Shoemaker completed 23 of 40 passes for 278 yards with an interception for Sam Houston. He also rushed for 70 yards on eight carries. Cody Chrest had 10 receptions for 154 yards.   OCT 3 WAC SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Donovan Adkins, So., DB, Sam Houston (Oct. 3),...Adkins, a sophomore defensive back, helped turn the tide for Sam Houston in The Battle of the Piney Woods with the Bearkats facing a 13-0 deficit with just under two minutes left in the first half. Adkins broke through and blocked an SFA punt deep in Lumberjack territory, recovering the ball himself and returning the block to the 7-yard line to set up the first touchdown of the game for Sam Houston. It was the first punt block by Sam Houston since the semifinal round against James Madison in the spring 2021 FCS Playoffs. - WAC Football
