  11/12/22 - Aidan OConnellrSr/2023, Purdue, 6-3, 210 (DS#7 QB) + More +

Aidan O'Connell passed for 237 yards and three scores, two to Payne Durham, and Purdue beat No. 21 Illinois 31-24 on Saturday to turn the Big Ten West race into a muddled mess. The win gives the Boilermakers (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) a crucial head-to-head tiebreaker over the Illini (7-3, 4-3 Big Ten), who were firmly in control until losing their last two games. The Boilermakers finish the season with favorable matchups against Northwestern and at Indiana. Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota are still alive in the division, too, entering Saturday with 3-3 records. The Badgers and Hawkeyes were playing each other. Purdue scored on three-straight drives to take a 28-21 lead on Durham's 13-yard touchdown reception with 13:13 left, finishing a drive that was aided by three Illinois penalties.

The Boilermakers gave O'Connell plenty of time and excellent protection all day, holding a highly rated Illinois defense zero sacks while getting to DeVito twice, including a costly 17-yard sack that took the wind out of an Illinois drive in the second half. O'Connell completed 25 of 40 attempts and threw one interception. Devin Mockobee added 106 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries. DeVito struggled against pressure and threw his first interception since a Sept. 10 win over Virginia. He completed 18 of 32 passes for 201 yards and a score. Purdue also became the first team to hold Illinois star Chase Brown to fewer than 100 rushing yards this season. The nation's leader in rushing yards also appeared to suffer a leg injury late in the game, when he had to be helped off the field. - Purdue/AP College Football

  10/15/22 - Aidan OConnellrSr/2023, Purdue, 6-3, 210 (DS#7 QB) + More +

Aidan O'Connell threw four touchdown passes and Devin Mockobee ran for a career-high 178 yards and another score Saturday as Purdue overpowered Nebraska 43-37. The Boilermakers (5-2, 3-1 Big Ten) have won four straight and retained a share of the conference's West Division lead with No. 24 Illinois. Nebraska (3-4, 2-2) had its two-game winning streak under interim coach Mickey Joseph snapped. O'Connell has played well this year, but Mockobee's presence gave the Boilermakers struggling ground game a spark. The combination was electric. Mockabee barreled through defenders, eluded tackles and even showed his shiftiness in the open field. He surpassed his previous single-game rushing total before scoring on a 1-yard run with 35 seconds left in the first half.

Purdue finished with its fifth-highest point total in a Big Ten game since Jeff Brohm arrived in 2017. Trey Palmer was equally impressive, almost single-handedly keeping Nebraska close. He caught a 37-yard TD pass on the fifth play of the second half to cut a 14-point halftime deficit in half and set up a field goal with a 60-yard run on his only carry of the game to make it 27-23. And after TJ Sheffield's 28-yard TD catch extended Purdue's margin to 34-23, Palmer answered on the next series with a 72-yard TD reception. Even when it appeared the Boilermakers sealed the victory with a 2-yard TD pass from O'Connell to Jones with 6:55 left, Palmer answered with a 64-yard reception that set up Anthony Grant's 1-yard TD run to make it 43-37 with 5:55 to go. But Nebraska never got the ball back. - Purdue/AP College Football

  10/08/22 - Aidan OConnellrSr/2023, Purdue, 6-3, 210 (DS#7 QB) + More +

Aidan O'Connell threw for 360 yards and two touchdowns, and Purdue held on for a 31-29 victory over Maryland on Saturday when a penalty wiped out the Terrapins' tying 2-point conversion with 35 seconds left. The two teams went scoreless in the second half until a wild finish that included four touchdowns in the final 7:47. Maryland appeared to have tied it when Taulia Tagovailoa found Rakim Jarrett in the corner of the end zone for a 2-point conversion in the final minute, but offensive lineman Delmar Glaze was flagged for an ineligible man downfield penalty, and Tagovailoa threw incomplete on the next attempt. Tagovailoa threw for 315 yards and three touchdowns, but Maryland couldn't produce any points off Purdue's three second-half turnovers.

The Terrapins (4-2, 1-2 Big Ten) broke a 17-all tie on Tagovailoa's 11-yard TD pass to Roman Hemby with 7:47 to play, but Cam Allen blocked the extra point. Then O'Connell, who had fumbled and thrown an interception earlier in the half, calmly guided the Boilermakers 66 yards in 10 plays and threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Payne Durham with 3:19 remaining. After taking the lead, Purdue (4-2, 2-1) forced a Maryland punt with 2:36 left, and although the Terrapins had all three timeouts left, they left Durham all alone over the middle for a 56-yard catch-and-run to the Maryland 2. That set up Devin Mockobee's 1-yard touchdown run with 1:20 left that made it 31-23. Tagovailoa and the Terps responded impressively, pulling within two on an 18-yard scoring pass to Corey Dyches, but Maryland ultimately came up one play short. O'Connell threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Mershawn Rice for a 17-10 lead. That drive was aided by an unnecessary roughness penalty on Maryland's Ahmad McCullough when Purdue would have been facing third-and-long. - Purdue/AP College Football

  10/01/22 - Cam AllenrSr/2024, Purdue, 6-1, 200 (DS#16 FS) + More +

Devin Mockobee rushed for 102 yards and a late touchdown to pad Purdue's lead, and the Boilermakers defense fueled yet another takedown of a ranked opponent in a 20-10 victory over No. 21 Minnesota on Saturday. Cam Allen had two of Purdue's three interceptions of Tanner Morgan, one in the end zone in the second quarter and another in the closing minutes. Quarterback Aidan O'Connell returned from a one-game injury absence for the Boilermakers (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten) and bounced back from two first-half interceptions to direct two drives for scores in the final 5 minutes. With star Mohamed Ibrahim held out after what appeared to be a minor ankle injury in Minnesota's previous game, the Gophers (4-1, 1-1) were stifled on the ground for just 47 yards on 26 attempts. After so many shootouts between these teams over the years, the defenses ruled the day and the Boilermakers got the better of it to stop a four-game losing streak to Minnesota.

The Spoilermakers is more like it. They beat No. 2 Iowa and No. 3 Michigan State last season and three ranked teams in 2018. This time, they knocked off a Gophers team that outscored its first four opponents 183-24. The only other teams in the FBS that hadn't trailed entering this week were Georgia and Washington. The Boilermakers had three turnovers and three three-and-outs over seven straight scoreless possessions, until O'Connell found a rhythm on a 70-yard march midway through the fourth quarter that set up Mitchell Fineran's second field goal of the game for a 13-10 lead with 4:57 left. Charlie Jones, who had 41 catches and seven touchdowns over the first four games to lead the FBS, had six receptions for 55 yards. Jones caught a 28-yard pass on the drive to get the Boilermakers in prime position to pull ahead. - Purdue/AP College Football

  09/24/22 - Austin BurtonrSr/2023, Purdue, 6-3, 212 (DS#46 QB) + More +

Austin Burton threw two touchdown passes in the first half and finished with three while leading Purdue to a badly-needed 28-26 victory over Florida Atlantic on Saturday. Burton made his first career start with the Boilermakers (2-2, 0-1 Big Ten) after the Big Ten's leading passer, Aidan O'Connell, was ruled out with an undisclosed injury. Florida Atlantic (2-3, 1-0 Conference USA) has lost 27 straight to Power Five teams since beating Minnesota in September 2007, largely because of Burton and Purdue receiver Charlie Jones.

The two hooked up for touchdowns on their first and final possessions of the first half, the second a 12-yarder to give Purdue a 14-13 lead with 18 seconds left. Purdue never trailed again. But the Owls sure didn't make it easy. After Dylan Downing scored on a 2-yard run to extend the Boilermakers lead to 21-13, Florida Atlantic turned Burton's only interception into a 16-yard TD pass from N'Kosi Perry to Lajohntay Wester to make it 21-20. Burton answered with his third scoring pass, a 4-yarder to TJ Sheffield and Perry made it 28-26 with a 5-yard TD pass to Wester. But a trick play on the 2-point conversion - a pass from Perry to Wester to the end zone was picked off by Cam Allen to preserve the lead. - Purdue/AP College Football

  09/19/22 - Myles SlusherrSr/2026, Purdue, 6-0, 195 (DS#87 CB) + More +

Arkansas has been playing without defensive back Myles Slusher, who has not seen the field since he suffered an apparent upper-body injury during the first quarter of the season opener. Slusher is expected to return soon. Slusher is a difference maker who should improve the back end upon his return to the nickel back position. That might allow the Razorbacks to reshuffle the rest of the secondary as they look to plug the massive hole left by safety Jalen Catalon's season-ending injury in Week 1. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  09/15/22 - Aidan OConnellrSr/2023, Purdue, 6-3, 210 (DS#7 QB) + More +

Purdue is headed to Syracuse this weekend after bouncing back from a dramatic season-opening loss to Penn State with a resounding 56-0 trouncing of Indiana State. Boilermaker quarterback Aidan O'Connell has completed 60.3 percent of his passes for 576 yards with 5 touchdowns...Tough wide receiver Charlie Jones, college level Cooper Kupp look-alike, has 21 catches for 286 yards for 4 TDs. Their measurables are misleading because this is one of college football's most entertaining pass-catch tandems. - Frank Cooney, NFL Draft Scout

  09/15/22 - Jalen GrahamrSr/2023, Purdue, 6-2, 226 (DS#28 OLB) + More +

Purdue's top defensive playmaker - Jalen Graham, a rare talent who can play at all three levels and effectively against the run and the pass - is sidelined up to four weeks with a tibia impact fracture suffered against Penn State. He finished that game and tried to practice last week. He is the type of safety/linebacker that NFL teams covet. - Frank Cooney, NFL Draft Scout

  09/15/22 - Jalen GrahamrSr/2023, Purdue, 6-2, 226 (DS#28 OLB) + More +

Purdue will be without one of its best defenders in one of its most important positions for at least the next few games. Senior defensive back Jalen Graham suffered a tibia impact fracture in the Boilermakers' season opener against Penn State that will take him out of playing for what is expected to be Purdue's next two or three games, local media reported before Saturday's game. The injury prevented him from playing against Indiana State and could sideline him against Syracuse, Florida Atlantic and potentially Minnesota. - Purdue Exponent

  09/10/22 - Charlie JonesrSr/2023, Purdue, 5-11, 176 (DS#14 WR) + More +

Purdue quarterback Aidan O'Connell and receiver Charlie Jones appear to be in perfect sync. The childhood friends hooked up for three first-half touchdowns in their second college game together, and then watched the rest of the Boilermakers' 56-0 victory over Indiana State on Saturday. Jones caught nine passes for 133 yards in his second straight 100-yard game since transferring to Purdue from Iowa. O'Connell went 17 of 19 for 211 yards and four scores while moving past Scott Campbell and into sixth on the school list for passing TDs. The first walk-on to earn Purdue's starting quarterback job now has 48 TD passes.

The combination of O'Connell and Jones has looked virtually unstoppable so far, connecting 21 times for 286 yards and four scores this season. "I came here, obviously, for the offense and I like what I'm seeing so far," said Jones, who has already matched last season's reception total. "Definitely, it was a good move." The Sycamores (1-1) fell to 0-6 all-time against the Boilermakers (1-1), and it didn't Purdue long to take control. Cam Allen recovered a fumble on the game's first snap and four plays later King Doerue scored on a 4-yard TD run. Jones stiff-armed a defender on his way to a 7-yard TD catch and O'Connell found Paul Piferi for a 26-yard score on the next two series. O'Connell closed out the half with TD passes of 36 and 5 yards to Jones to make it 35-0. - Purdue/AP College Football

  09/01/22 - Tony GrimesrSr/2026, Purdue, 6-1, 195 (DS#61 CB) + More +

ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 72. Tony Grimes, CB, North Carolina, Junior. Notable 2021 stat: 47 tackles (36 solo). Last year's ranking: 80. Grimes was supposed to still be in high school when he first stepped onto the field for North Carolina in 2020. After reclassifying during the COVID-19 pandemic that shut down high school football in his home state of Virginia, Grimes quickly developed into one of the ACC's most gifted corners as a true freshman. The 2021 season saw some regression -- no TDs allowed in 2020, four in 2021 -- but he still held opposing QBs to less than 50% completions while breaking up nine passes. - ESPN.com
