  09/07/19 - Sean CliffordrSr/2023, Penn State, 6-2, 218 (DS#20 QB) + More +

Sean Clifford turned in an all-around performance in another lopsided win for Penn State. Clifford threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns and ran 11 times for 51 to lead the No. 15 Nittany Lions back from a halftime deficit to beat Buffalo 45-13 on Saturday night. "Sean's able to make plays with his mind, he's able to make plays with his arm and tonight he made plays with his feet as well," coach James Franklin said.

Clifford, the Lions' first-year starter, opened the scoring with a 28-yard pass to Jahan Dotson on Penn State's second drive. He tossed a pair of TDs to tight end Pat Freiermuth in the third quarter after cornerback John Reid's 37-yard interception return put Penn State up for good. Noah Cain added a 2-yard TD run to give Penn State's a 35-13 lead heading into the fourth. "We weren't executing in the first half," Clifford said. "I take the blame for that. We pulled together and talked through some things and got it going in the second." The Nittany Lions (2-0) trailed 10-7 at half after the Bulls (1-1) had dominated time of possession to that point. - AP College Football

  08/31/19 - Sean CliffordrSr/2023, Penn State, 6-2, 218 (DS#20 QB) + More +

Sean Clifford's first game as Penn State's starting quarterback was a short one. A near flawless first-half performance backed by a dominant effort from the defense allowed Clifford to take the second half off as the 15th-ranked Nittany Lions hammered FCS foe Idaho 72-7. Clifford left the game early in the third after his 14-for-23, 280-yard, two-touchdown effort helped spot Penn State a comfortable lead in his first career start. He chipped in 57 rushing yards on seven carries and hooked up with receiver KJ Hamler for scoring strikes of 36 and 21 yards. "I need to watch the tape to really give an evaluation," Clifford said, "But when you score 79 points, it's not a bad day at the office."

Hamler, who beat the Idaho secondary clean for both of his touchdown receptions, said afterward he realized Clifford was nervous. "I just pulled him aside and just said, 'Calm down,'" Hamler said. "And he went on a little rampage after that." Journey Brown and Noah Cain both added a pair of touchdown runs while Ricky Slade, Devyn Ford and Nick Eury each ran for scores. Jake Pinegar kicked two field goals and Jordan Stout made another for Penn State (1-0). Will Levis threw a touchdown pass to tight end Brenton Strange in the fourth quarter. The Nittany Lions overcame early sloppiness before coasting the rest of the way to their biggest point total since an 81-0 win against Cincinnati in 1991. - AP College Football

  08/23/19 - Sean CliffordrSr/2023, Penn State, 6-2, 218 (DS#20 QB) + More +

Sean Clifford will start at quarterback for No. 15 Penn State in its season opener against Idaho. The Nittany Lions announced Clifford as the starter in a tweet on Friday. Clifford was expected to win the starting job after longtime backup Tommy Stevens transferred to Mississippi State following spring practice. Since Stevens' departure, Clifford had been battling freshman Will Levis for the spot.

With Stevens injured early last season, Clifford earned playing time in three of the first four games, during which he completed 5 of 5 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns. The sophomore also played in the team's bowl game against Kentucky, and led the first-team offense throughout spring practice with Stevens again injured. Despite his limited playing time, Clifford has already earned a place in the Penn State record books. His first career completion was a 34-yard touchdown strike, and he followed that a week later with the longest passing touchdown in school history, a 95-yarder against Kent State. The Aug. 31 game against Idaho will be Clifford's first career start. - AP College Football

It has been 19 years since Penn State had a linebacker selected in the first round of the NFL draft. Parsons has all the attributes to end that drought. "He's a generational player," said LaVar Arrington, the last Penn State linebacker to be a first-rounder. Parsons is still waiting for that first home start, though. Despite being the first player to lead the team in tackles as a freshman, Parsons had a lot to learn.

It was not enough to practice hard. He needed to focus when he was not participating. Parsons could make plays because of his freaky athleticism, but after playing defensive end in high school he was taking introductory courses at linebacker. Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry said Parsons was at the 100-level last year and is now working on 200. Parsons disagrees. "Oh, yeah, I'm definitely 200-level. I would say I'm pushing 300-level. I'm probably 300-level, to be honest with you," Parsons said. - Washington Post/AP College Football

  08/03/19 - *Yetur Gross-MatosJr/2020, Penn State, 6-5, 266 (DS#2 DE) + More +

Penn State's Yetur Gross-Matos, a potential top-10 NFL draft pick, missed the entire summer due to a suspension - but James Franklin said Saturday he still expects big things out of the defensive end. "He's a mature guy," the head coach said. "He's had a great summer, from what I see. He looked great (Friday). I know he's appreciative of being back. I think he's going to have a really big year for us; as the year went on last year, he really kind of separated himself into one of the elite ends of college football."

Gross-Matos finished with 20 tackles for loss last season, becoming the 11th Nittany Lion to ever hit that milestone. (Not too bad for a first-year starter.) But, following the spring, he and running back Journey Brown were suspended this summer due to a violation of team rules. Per Franklin, their suspensions ended Thursday. Camp opened Friday. "We're very pleased with him and his development, and his appreciation for being at Penn State and his appreciation for being a part of our football program, and his attitude and approach," Franklin said, referring to Gross-Matos. - Centre Times
