Penn State football will have its star tight end for the 2020 season, after all. Despite reports of the contrary, Pat Freiermuth will play this fall season, he said Wednesday in a quick appearance on the Big Ten Network. The Athletic's Audrey Snyder first reported his decision to play this season. The junior previously made the decision to not play, a source with knowledge of the situation told the Centre Daily Times, after it appeared the season would not begin until November at the earliest. On his BTN appearance, Feiermuth acknowledged having conversations with coach James Franklin about the pros and cons of sticking with the team, but denied ever opting out of the season. "I never opted out. I don't know where those reports came from...I'm just excited to play football again for @PennStateFball." - Centre Times

  09/15/20 - Daequan HardyrSr/2024, Penn State, 5-09, 179 (DS#35 CB) + More +

Four Penn State football players were charged with marijuana possession Monday, pushing the number of Nittany Lions facing pot charges since July to eight. One former Penn State football player was also charged with marijuana possession Monday, making him the second former Nittany Lion to be charged this month. The university's athletics department is aware of the charges against redshirt freshman linebacker Lance Dixon, redshirt freshman cornerback Daequan Hardy, redshirt freshman running back Terry Smith and freshman cornerback Joseph Johnson III, a spokesperson wrote in a statement. "These alleged actions do not reflect the values and standards of our program and will be addressed," the athletics department said. "We will not comment any further as this is an ongoing legal matter." Dixon, Hardy, Smith and Johnson were charged after a university police officer smelled pot coming from the quartet's on-campus apartment in August. An officer found a bag of marijuana in Dixon's room, a "partially smoked marijuana joint" in Hardy's room, three bags of marijuana in Smith's room and two bags of marijuana in Johnson's room, police wrote in an affidavit of probable cause filed Monday. - Centre Times

  09/12/20 - *Pat FreiermuthJr/2021, Penn State, 6-5, 251 (DS#2 TE) + More +

Penn State football will be without its star tight end whenever it next takes the field. Junior tight end Pat Freiermuth will not return to play when the season begins, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The team already lost its star linebacker when Micah Parsons decided to forego his junior season and declare for the 2021 NFL draft amid uncertainty about when the Nittany Lions will take the field again during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Freiermuth, like Parsons, is widely projected to go in the first round of next year's draft. The star tight end accomplished plenty in his two years on the football field at Penn State.

He was a reliable target for former quarterback Trace McSorley and redshirt junior Sean Clifford in one year with each starting quarterback. Freiermuth was a strong and physical blocker who didn't back down from opposing defensive linemen, while displaying astute skills as a pass-catcher and a runner after the catch. He finished his Penn State career with 69 receptions for 875 yards and 15 touchdowns in 26 games played. His 15 touchdown receptions tie him for ninth all-time at Penn State and leaves him tied with Mike Gesicki for most among tight ends in school history. Freiermuth was expected to be Clifford's primary target again this season, had it taken place on schedule. - Centre Times

Penn State junior linebacker Micah Parsons has elected to forgo the 2020 season to prepare for the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft. Parsons was named a Consensus All-American in 2019, the 43rd in program history and the first since Saquon Barkley in 2017. He was voted the Butkus-Fitzgerald Linebacker of the Year in the Big Ten, becoming the first sophomore in Big Ten history to win the award. The Harrisburg native was additionally a finalist for the Butkus Award and a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award. During the 2019 campaign, Parsons finished the season with 10 or more tackles in three straight games and six of the final seven games. He ranked fifth in the Big Ten averaging 8.4 tackles per game, while ranking third in the league and sixth nationally forcing 0.31 fumbles per contest. - Penn State Football

If there is a college football season this fall, Penn State could play it without All-American linebacker Micah Parsons. Yahoo Sports reported on Tuesday night that the junior from Harrisburg is expected to opt-out of the 2020 season and declare for the NFL Draft via an announcement on Wednesday. "Penn State had a team meeting Tuesday night, and multiple people close to the program are expecting him to leave barring a last-minute change of heart," Yahoo's Eric Eldholm writes. Multiple media NFL mock drafts list Parsons as a first-round pick, and he was widely expected to declare following the 2020 season.

Health and safety concerns tied to the coronavirus pandemic have apparently sped up that process, though, as the decision, if it comes as expected, will be made before the Lions open camp this coming Friday. A former five-star recruit, Parsons moved from defensive end to linebacker when he arrived in State College and led the Lions in tackles during both 2018 and 2019 seasons, the latter of which marked his first year as a starter. His likely final game was perhaps his best in blue and white, as Parsons finished the team’s Cotton Bowl win over Memphis with 14 tackles (3.5 for loss), two sacks, and two forced fumbles. - Penn Live
