Old Dominion University will cancel the fall athletic season because of the coronavirus pandemic, President John R. Broderick announced Monday. "We concluded that the season – including travel and competition – posed too great a risk for our student-athletes," President Broderick said. "I know many on and off campus will be disappointed, but we must prioritize the health and safety of our student-athletes, as well as our coaches, staff and fans." The decision was made in concert with Athletic Director Wood Selig, coaches, medical and public health experts and state and local officials, he said. "I want to compliment Dr. Selig for being such a thoughtful colleague," President Broderick said. "I know there are schools where this discussion has been complicated by other factors, but for Wood and me, it was just about health and safety." Selig said he hopes fall sports can be played in the spring, "but first and foremost it has to be safe for everyone involved and would also require NCAA approval." - Old Dominion Athletics

Second-team All-Conference USA linebacker Lawrence Garner is no longer on Old Dominion's football team, a school spokesman confirmed Wednesday. Garner, who led the Monarchs with 111 tackles as a junior last season, was removed from ODU's most recent online roster. The school spokesman declined to give a reason for the player's absence. Garner, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound native of Columbus, N.J., started all 12 games last season. A team captain, he became the second player in school history with consecutive 100-tackle seasons. Garner's departure leaves the Monarchs especially thin at linebacker as they open a modified fall camp Thursday under first-year coach Ricky Rahne. Nine linebackers remain on the roster. - The Virginian Pilot

  07/18/20 - Taylor HeinickeSr/2015, Old Dominion, 6-0, 214 (DS#16 QB) + More +

Once campus reopens and classes restart, Old Dominion students might find they're sitting in class next to a legend. Former ODU quarterback Taylor Heinicke, the most decorated player in the Monarchs' short football history, plans to return to campus this fall to finish his degree. "It's kinda been a shadow over me, or a weight on my shoulders, over the last 4-5 years," Heinicke said in a telephone interview this week from his home in Georgia. "I always wanted to finish at ODU. I think that's a big thing. ODU gave me the opportunity to come there and play football for four years. ODU always treated me great, and I just want to finish there on campus and do it the right way." Heinicke, 27, has switched majors - from engineering to mathematics - since his playing days, and after completing some online courses needs about six classes to finish.

Heinicke became ODU's starting quarterback under coach Bobby Wilder in 2011 and finished his four-year career with 14,959 passing yards and 132 touchdown passes. He was an All-American and the Walter Payton Award winner as a sophomore in 2012. Heinicke was undrafted after leaving ODU, and had short stints and limited success with four NFL teams: Minnesota, New England, Houston and Carolina. He was on the St. Louis BattleHawks' roster in the XFL this season before the league folded. Heinicke is still working out and staying in shape "in case something crazy happens and I get a call." - The Virginian Pilot

  07/08/20 - Zack KuntzrSr/2023, Old Dominion, 6-7, 255 (DS#8 TE) + More +

During a video conference call with media Wednesday, Penn State tight end Zack Kuntz made a grandiose statement about his teammates at his position. "I think we're the most talented tight end room in the country," the redshirt sophomore said. "And there's no doubt in my mind about that." There is little doubt the player atop the Nittany Lions' tight end depth chart is one of the best in the country. But there is precious little with regard to experience on the roster after all-Big Ten honoree Pat Freiermuth. So for Kuntz's declaration to carry any legitimacy, he will have to have a breakout 2020 season. The native of the Harrisburg area is prepping himself for just that.

"I think Pat has shown what he can do, and he can do even more," Kuntz said. "And I think it's my time to kind of show what I am made of and what I'm capable of doing." One of four four-star incoming recruits for Penn State at tight end since 2018, Kuntz has added more than 30 pounds of muscle since joining the program. And after the graduation of Kittanning's Nick Bowers, the Nittany Lions have a need for a No. 2 tight end to complement Freiermuth, who in only two seasons has tied the school record for touchdown catches by a tight end (15). - Tribune Review

  12/11/19 - Kesean StrongrSr/2020, Old Dominion, 5-09, 197 (DS#103 RB) + More +

Old Dominion has hired Penn State offensive coordinator Ricky Rahne as its head coach. Rahne has been offensive coordinator at Penn State the last two seasons and on coach James Franklin's staffs with the Nittany Lions and Vanderbilt since 2011. The 39-year-old former Cornell quarterback has never been a head coach. ODU is replacing the only head coach its football program has ever had in Bobby Wilder, who resigned after 11 seasons with a 77-56 record. Wilder led the program through its transition from FCS to FBS. The Monarchs went 1-11 this season. - AP College Football

  12/02/19 - Kesean StrongrSr/2020, Old Dominion, 5-09, 197 (DS#103 RB) + More +

Bobby Wilder has resigned as Old Dominion's football coach after 13 seasons. Athletic director Wood Selig made the announcement Monday. Wilder was hired 13 when Old Dominion decided to restart its football program. He signed his first class in 2008 and the Monarchs played their first games in 2009. Wilder compiled a 77-56 overall record with the Monarchs, including a 10-3 mark in 2016 when ODU won the Bahamas Bowl. Success has been fleeting the last three seasons as the Monarchs compiled a 10-26 record, including a program-worst 1-11 record this season. The decline comes at the time when ODU invested $67.5 million to build a new S.B. Ballard Stadium. Selig says the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation will cover the $600,000 buyout Wilder is due. A national search for a new coach will begin immediately. - AP College Football

Darriel Mack Jr. threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score, Dillon Gabriel threw a touchdown pass and Central Florida held off Tulane 34-31 on Saturday to keep its hopes for a third straight American Athletic Conference championship alive. Tulane scored 24 second-half points and closed to the final tally after UCF recovered an onside kick. The Knights (8-3, 5-2) entered having lost three games by a combined seven points but jumped to a 10-0 lead after Dylan Barnas's 35-yard field goal and Gabriel's 23-yard scoring pass to Marlon Williams (nine catches for 119 yards). Otis Anderson's 44-yard scoring run put the Knights up 17-7 at halftime.

Mack scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter and his 2-yard pass to Anthony Roberson gave the Knights a 31-17 lead before Barnas kicked what proved to be the winning 26-yard field goal. Stephon Huderson returned a kickoff 98 yards for a score for Tulane (6-5, 3-4). Corey Dauphine ran for two TDs and the Green Wave closed to 34-24 after his 7-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. After stopping the Knights on downs, Tulane's Justin McMillan threw a 7-yard TD pass to Jalen McCleskey on fourth-and-goal with 26 seconds to play and UCF recovered the ensuing onside kick to seal it. Gabriel was 24 of 46 for 317 passing yards for UCF. McMillan was 13 of 27 for 181 yards passing and rushed for 102 yards on 23 carries for Tulane. - Central Florida/AP College Football

  10/27/19 - Eric KumahrSr/2022, Old Dominion, 6-2, 223 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Its a new landscape out there in college football between the NCAA Transfer Portal and players ability to redshirt despite playing in four games but that does not mean there are not a few decisions that reach the nexus of both and take an unexpected twist.

At least it seems that way in light of recent news out of Norfolk as Old Dominion confirmed that ex-Virginia Tech starting wideout and grad transfer to the team Eric Kumah will instead opt to redshirt this year for the Monarchs instead of playing out the rest of the campaign. - CollegeFootballTalk.com
