Texas Tech linebacker Xavier Benson, who was the team's fourth-leading tackler last season, announced Thursday he is taking a leave of absence from football to focus on his mental health. In a statement he posted on Twitter, Benson wrote, in part, "My entire life I've felt like an outsider. Those around me never fully understood who I was, and, to be honest, I'm not sure I fully understood myself. I was in survivor mode and could never really catch a break in life. I know now that I need help and want help."

Benson said his decision to step away from football "isn't a decision I take lightly, but it's one I know will help me in all walks of life moving forward. "I want to be more productive for my friends, my teammates and most importantly, my family - not just now but in the future. I know I need help with dealing with my past and how it affects my personal life." Benson played in all 12 games last season, starting 10. He was credited with 57 tackles, second only to linebacker Riko Jeffers among Tech returnees, and four tackles for loss. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

After using Twitter to affect change in the Oklahoma State football program, running back Chuba Hubbard is stepping away from social media. Bothered by his social media accounts becoming "a playground for hate," Hubbard reactivated his Twitter account, @Hubbard_RMN, Tuesday when he wrote a message that said he will not be using social media "until further notice." Hubbard, the Cowboys' star running back, had deleted his Twitter account Monday, hours after posting three consecutive tweets that criticized and called for the resignation of Oklahoma County district attorney David Prater.

Protesters marched outside Prater's office on Monday, upset with Prater both for filing terrorism charges against some demonstrators and for clearing the Edmond police officers involved in the fatal shooting of a naked Black teenager, Isaiah Lewis, last year. Hubbard posted the tweets about Prater late Monday afternoon. By the end of the day, his Twitter account was deactivated. But he reactivated it and posted Tuesday's message. "I have never incited or promoted violence or hate," he wrote. "All I've done is voice my opinion on issues I feel are not ethical!" - Daily Oklahoman

2020 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD WATCH LIST: Chuba Hubbard (Jr.), Oklahoma State,...A Heisman candidate out of Canada, Hubbard adds the preseason recognition to his already long list of accolades. In addition to being named a Doak Walker Award finalist last season, he was also named a unanimous All-American, the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and a finalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award. He also finished eighth in the voting for the Heisman Trophy, which marks the third best finish for a Canadian player, and was named the Cornish Trophy winner, which is given to the best Canadian player in NCAA football.

The Sherwood Park, Alberta, native ended the 2019 season as the FBS leader in rushing yards, rushing yards per game, 200-yard rushing games and all-purpose yards per game. He ranked first among all players from Power Five conferences in rushing touchdowns and led the Big 12 in both points scored and total touchdowns. Hubbard's season total of 2,094 rushing yards ranks 16th in FBS history and third in Big 12 Conference history. It marked the second-best single-season total in school history, trailing only Barry Sanders' 1988 Heisman season. - Oklahoma State Football
