  In pregame warmups ahead of Ohio State's 38-25 win over Penn State, kicker Blake Haubeil felt some groin pain. It prompted the Buckeyes' coaching staff to make a change. Backup Dominic DiMaccio would handle kickoffs, easing Haubeil's workload as he dealt with the ailment. But it did not improve during the game. Early in the second quarter, Haubeil pushed a 20-yard field goal try wide right, preventing Ohio State from taking a potential 17-3 lead after its offense had marched 72 yards down the field. It was his last attempt for the game, as DiMaccio took over all of the placekicking duties, including field goals, following Haubeil's miss. "We hopefully can get Blake healthy again and get that back in order, because that was not good," Buckeyes coach Ryan Day said. "We left points on the field there. Those are heartbreakers. It's one thing not to score a touchdown, but when you miss a field goal, that just hurts momentum. You feel it. It's real.   Ohio State football's Cameron Brown will miss the rest of the season after tearing his Achilles in the Buckeyes' 38-25 win over Penn State according to Lettermen Row's Austin Ward. The junior cornerback went down with a non-contact injury in the fourth quarter and had to be carted off the field. After coming to Columbus as a four-star wide receiver in 2018, Brown had worked his way into the role as a slot cornerback in his third season. He was used primarily on third down in the first two games. Though he's also taken snaps as an outside cornerback and had replaced Sevyn Banks opposite of Shaun Wade at the time of his injury. Brown's injury is a significant hit to a defensive back room that was already short on experience outside of Wade coming into the season. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  From the moment he hit the field for a two-snap sequence in Kansas State's opener, quarterback Will Howard has played like a veteran. Against West Virginia's stout defense Saturday, Howard played more like one would expect for a freshman who, this time last year, still was in high school and starring for Downington High in Downington, Pa., four and a half hours away from Milan Puskar Stadium. Howard threw an interception on the game's opening possession. He threw another later in the quarter. And his final one on the day, in the third period, was returned for a touchdown. Well aware that quarterbacks walk a fine line - earning too much praise after victories and too much criticism after losses - K-State head coach Chris Klieman forcefully defended Howard following the team's 37-10 defeat.

"We're for sure not going to hang this on Will Howard, because I think he's continuing to improve," Klieman said. "I thought he made some really good throws. We have to be better for him, and we have to be better with a lot of the things we're doing offensively. We've got to block better. We've got to catch the ball better. We've got to do a lot of different things." Yes, Klieman said, there might have been a throw or two Howard wanted back; Klieman added "every quarterback in the country" goes through a similar dilemma every game. Not that he expects the performance to rattle Howard. "The one thing I'm not worried about is Will's confidence - any of that stuff," Klieman said of Howard, who completed 19 of his 37 passes (51%) for 184 yards and a touchdown along with the three interceptions.   Justin Fields doesn't need the energy of 110,000 people mostly rooting against him in a stadium to put on a show. The Ohio State quarterback is just fine shredding defenses in front of a more intimate gathering. Justin Fields passed for 318 yards and four touchdowns, two to Chris Olave, and No. 3 Ohio State beat No. 18 Penn State 38-25 on an eerily quiet Saturday night at what is usually one of the most raucous settings in college football. Jeremy Ruckert also caught a pair of touchdowns, Master Teague II ran for another and the Buckeyes generated 526 yards of offense in their 15th straight Big Ten win and 10th straight on the road against a ranked opponent.   It was already impressive that Haskell Garrett was able to play in Ohio State football's 52-17 win over Nebraska less than two months after being shot in the face. Having an impact, being the best player on the defensive line, and earning Player of the Game honors is something you could call miraculous. "I hugged Haskell in the locker room after the game and said, 'This is a miracle,'" defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs said after the game. "It's a miracle. This kid was shot in the face. I don't know how many days ago it was, but it wasn't that long ago, and he just never gave up...He's in there working with Larry (Johnson) with stitches learning and preparing without being able to do anything physically. "For him to do that and be able to play...I know having him on the field was a difference-maker for the Buckeyes." Garrett's efforts in the win - two tackles, one tackle for loss and a sack - were not only an inspirational story but a much-needed boost from a spot that the Buckeyes were thought to be lacking depth. His absence, and the uncertainty surrounding Taron Vincent's status, left questions for how OSU would make up for losing three veterans from 2019. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  There must be an injury bug going around college football directed at the best wide receiver from the 2018 recruiting classes of the country's best programs. Chris Olave took some hits in the Buckeyes' win over Nebraska, and the final one in the second half sidelined him for the rest of the game with no further update on his status. "He seemed good," OSU coach Ryan Day said after the game. "He was in good spirits, had a good look in his eye. That's all I really know at this point. We'll see what happens (Sunday) morning." As long as he's healthy, Ohio State is going to rely heavily on Olave and Wilson as Jameson Williams and the true freshmen gain experience - though Jaxon Smith-Njigba has already shown how effective he might be in the slot.

Against Nebraska, 14 of Fields' 21 targets went to those Olave and Wilson, including the first five of the game. That means those two have to perform. Catching all but one of those targets - which was only dropped because Olave was flipped on his head - isn't a bad start. Olave is trying to solidify himself as a first-round draft pick in 2021, while Wilson is showing that he already is one in 2022. Moving him into the slot makes him a mismatch nightmare while also giving him experience all over the field. Ohio State's passing attack is at the top of the list of things you didn't have to worry about coming into the season. Saturday confirmed that. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  What's up with Ohio State moving past Notre Dame after the Fighting Irish had their most impressive victory of the season, against Pittsburgh? Remember, the Buckeyes were No. 2 in the preseason and a close second to No. 1 Clemson. When the Big Ten postponed its fall season, Ohio State and the rest of the conference's teams became ineligible for inclusion in the rankings. Then the Big Ten decided to play in the fall after all and those teams became eligible again. But some voters decided they would wait until teams played before being considered for inclusion. That held back the Buckeyes and some other Big Ten teams for a few weeks. Now that all the voters are including Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan, et al., those teams got an extra boost this week. Wisconsin moved up five spots to No. 9, appearing on every ballot for the first time since returning to the rankings three polls ago. No. 13 Michigan also moved up five spots, though the Wolverines got a bounce from an impressive victory at Minnesota. - AP College Football

  Justin Fields completed 20 of 21 passes for two touchdowns and ran for another, Master Teague III rushed for a pair of scores and Ohio State rolled over Nebraska 52-17 Saturday on the opening day of the Big Ten's pandemic-delayed season. Fields, a Heisman Trophy finalist last season, completed his first 12 passes and threw for 276 yards. He ran for another 52 - including a stunning 17-yard third-quarter touchdown scramble around the left side that saw him spin past a defender into the end zone. The Ohio State defense took most of the first half to figure out a way to contain quarterback Adrian Martinez, who marched the Huskers down for a touchdown in the opening 2 minutes of the game. Nebraska (0-1, 0-1 Big Ten) tied the score at 14 in the second quarter, but an Ohio State (1-0, 1-0 Big Ten) field goal, a defensive stop and Teague's second TD run gave the Buckeyes a 24-14 lead at the half. Then came Fields' nifty touchdown run and a 55-yard scoop and score by Buckeyes cornerback Sevyn Banks, and Ohio State had it under control. - Ohio State/AP College Football

  As if any doubt remained, Ohio State offensive line coach Greg Studrawa revealed junior Nicholas Petit-Frere and sophomore Harry Miller as starters at right tackle and left guard, respectively. Petit-Frere has been considered the front-runner there for a few weeks, and coach Ryan Day said last week he had been working primarily with the first team. He held off true freshman Paris Johnson and sophomore Dawand Jones to land his first starting job. Studrawa said Petit-Frere pushed his weight up to 315 pounds during the long offseason with help from his mother's cooking. He said the No. 7 prospect in the 2018 recruiting class per 247 Sports' national composite is bigger and stronger after changing his body.   Ohio State football will reportedly be without a potential impact freshman on defense for the coming season. Lettermen Row reported Saturday that Kourt Williams suffered a torn ACL during preseason camp, and the resulting surgery will keep him out of the 2020 season. Williams did not participate during the 30-minute window of practice open to reporters on Oct. 3. Safeties coach Matt Barnes declined to discuss Williams' development when asked about him during a Zoom call with reporters earlier this week. Ohio State typically does not comment on injuries, and deferred questions about player absences that day to the first pre-game status report, which will come out Friday. Williams was a four-star, top-200 recruit out of St. John Bosco in Bellflower, California. He was ranked No. 12 among outside linebackers in the 247 national composite, but was expected to play more of a linebacker/safety hybrid role with the Buckeyes. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  Trey Sermon rushed for 947 yards in his best season at Oklahoma in 2018. He carried the ball 164 times for an average of 5.8 yards per carry as the leading ball carrier on a team that featured Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Kyler Murray (140 carries for 1,001 yards) and fellow tailback Kennedy Brooks (119 carries for 1,056 yards). Sermon was first up in that two-back system, paired with a quarterback who was always the most dangerous player on the field. And then last season, Sermon suffered some injuries and he saw his workload reduced, so he transferred to Ohio State.

Master Teague rushed for 789 yards last season as the clear backup to J.K. Dobbins for the Buckeyes. Teague played in enough blowouts to carry the ball 135 times for a 5.8 yard average, and he even was named third-team All-Big Ten. He was clearly No. 2 in a one-back system, but once Dobbins left for the NFL, Teague was the most experienced back on the team until Sermon came along. Teague tore his Achilles tendon in the spring. Sermon had offseason surgery for a knee injury suffered last season. The two of them should form a one-two running back punch for the Buckeyes when the season kicks off Oct. 24. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  Baron Browning spent three years with Ohio State football looking for a position to call his own. Depending on your perspective, that search may continue as the 2020 season - the senior linebacker's final turn with the Buckeyes - begins next week. You could also look at the scenario another way - from the Buckeyes' preferred angle right now. What it Browning finally found his position, and they simply call it Baron Browning? Ohio State's linebacker shuffle will see Browning step outside to play Sam linebacker after sharing the Mike spot in the middle with Tuf Borland last season. Browning said he will also occasionally pop back inside as needed. Yet most intriguingly he will also line up as a rush end in the Buckeyes' rushmen package, a role he executed successfully last season.

Perhaps, instead of locking Browning in to one position, his full potential can be unlocked by moving him all over the defensive front. Browning, for one, sounds like he believes it is worth a shot. He said he does not need a label in order to make an impact. "I've been playing on the outside and I still have been playing on the inside here and there in certain packages," Browning said. "I feel like this will allow me to show my versatility - that I can rush, that I can cover, that I can play inside the box and I can play outside, so I'm excited." - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  Five-star defensive end with first-round NFL Draft potential in his second-year under Johnson. That's what Bosa was in 2017, and that's what Harrison is coming into this season. Both were trying to be the next name in what's a growing list of top-five draft picks Johnson has coached in Columbus and were coming off freshmen seasons that set them up to take off as sophomores. Ironically both suffered losses Fiesta Bowl losses to Clemson in the College Football playoff as well. Bosa was the best player in that room - and probably the Big Ten - even though he was the youngest player in the rotation. That might end up being the case with Harrison, who has the same expectations for his second year as the Bosas brothers and Young had before him. He's already on the five-star path, and the next step is solidifying himself as one of the country's best defensive players. At least that's what those three did. "Those guys that came before me, they're a bunch of great players," Harrison said. "There's a lot of expectation for me to do so-and-so numbers. Honestly, I don't really try to think about that. Every day at practice, I go out and get better, work on my technique." - Cleveland Plain Dealer
