  It sounds as though Tristan Gebbia's status is in doubt for the Beavers' upcoming game against Utah on Saturday night. Oregon State's quarterback left the game in the closing minute of the fourth quarter during last Friday's win over rival Oregon with a left hamstring injury and did not return. "It is significantly more serious than we initially thought after the game," Beavers' coach Jonathan Smith said Monday. "We're going to gather some more information, really, today and tomorrow and we're hopeful we can get him up to full speed by the end of the week. We'll see where that goes."

Smith said Gebbia will continue to be evaluated, and he is hopeful that further testing will reveal some good news. But until those test results come out, there is not much the redshirt junior can do aside from receiving treatment. The injury occurred when Gebbia attempted to reach the end zone on a quarterback keeper and ended up at the bottom of a large pile of players. There was some outrage on social media when a replay angle of the play showed that Ducks' safety Verone McKinley III appeared to pull on Gebbia's leg during the pileup in an attempt to get him away from the end zone. - Gazette Times

  Linebacker Palaie Gaoteote IV remains in concussion protocol, Helton said Tuesday. The junior suffered the injury in the second game of the season and missed USC's road win over Utah as a result. "He's had much improvement from Day 1 to where he is now, but you have to get rid of symptoms," Helton said. Sophomore linebacker Ralen Goforth is also still dealing with a foot sprain, though he was expected to start some basic change-of-direction work to test the injury Tuesday. - Orange County Register

  Ohio State held on to the fourth spot in the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday night after having its previous game canceled, landing behind No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 3 Clemson for a second straight week. The selection committee's top seven teams were unchanged from last week's rankings after the playoff contenders either won comfortably or didn't play because of COVID-19 issues. Texas A&M (6-1) was in fifth and Florida (7-1) sixth.

Ohio State (4-0) had to cancel its game at Illinois last week because of a spike in COVID-19 cases in the program. It was the second game of the season the Buckeyes have missed out on. One more cancellation would leave them ineligible for the Big Ten championship game and unable to play more than six regular-season games. No. 7 Cincinnati (8-0) also had its last game canceled. The Bearcats are next scheduled to play Dec. 12 at Tulsa. - AP College Football

  The football game between No. 3 Ohio State University and the University of Illinois, scheduled for this Saturday at 12 noon (EST) in Champaign, Ill., has been cancelled by Ohio State University after further positive tests for the coronavirus were discovered after a round of PCR testing this afternoon. The Department of Athletics has paused all team-related football activities. The decision to cancel and pause was made jointly by Director of Athletics Gene Smith, University President Kristina M. Johnson, head team physician Dr. Jim Borchers and in consultation with the Big Ten Conference. - Ohio State Football

  Ohio State is averaging 45.3 points per game, the best mark in the Big Ten. Its next opponent is the conference's seventh-ranked defense by points allowed. Illinois (2-3) brings that metric and a two-game win streak into its 11 a.m. kickoff on Saturday at Memorial Stadium with the Buckeyes (4-0). "It'd be mental to me," Illini defensive end Owen Carney said Monday afternoon of his approach to facing the vaunted Ohio State offense. "Hand placement, staying in your gaps, just not trying to go over and beyond because we're playing Ohio State. It's the little things that got us on this two-game winning streak, and it's the little things that's going to make us successful on the field Saturday."

Heading the Buckeyes' seemingly relentless offense is quarterback Justin Fields. The 6-foot-3, 228-pound junior is a reigning Heisman Trophy finalist and entered the 2020 season as an Associated Press preseason second-team All-American. What has Fields accomplished since receiving the latter accolade? He's merely completed 90 of his 113 passes - good for a 79.6 percent clip - for 1,208 yards and 13 touchdowns on top of rushing for three more scores. He didn't toss an interception in his first three games, but did throw three in this past Saturday's 42-35 win against then-No. 9 Indiana. "Justin Fields is as good a player as there is in college football," Illinois coach Lovie Smith said. "He so happens to be one of best athletes in college football also, so he can hurt you moving around to buy time to throw the football.   Ohio State football announced its full list of champions from Saturday's 42-35 win over Indiana, and the list includes 19 players. While defensive end Jonathon Cooper, tight end Luke Farrell, wide receiver Garrett Wilson and safety Josh Proctor earned player of the game honors, 15 others were acknowledged as well. For the first time this season, quarterback Justin Fields didn't grade out as a champion after having arguably his worst game as a Buckeye. Fields only completed 18 of his 30 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns along with a season-high 78 yards rushing and a score on 15 carries. But he also matched his career total of interceptions with three and was sacked five times. "I didn't play well at all," Fields said after the game. "I have to improve. I have to be better.   For the second straight game, the Buckeyes surrendered four second-half touchdowns. Two weeks ago against Rutgers, that could be largely chalked up as an aberration because Ohio State substituted liberally in that comfortable win. But the breakdowns against Indiana can't be dismissed. Ty Fryfogle, the Big Ten's current Big Ten offensive player of the week, beat Wade in one-on-one coverage for one of his three second-half touchdowns. "On a couple, we had had blown coverages, and sometimes they just made a play," Wade said. "That's a part of playing football. Receivers are going to make plays, and DBs are going to make plays." Penix threw for 491 yards, including 294 in the second half.

"It's not just the secondary," Wade said. "It's the whole defense and the whole offense. In the second half. I don't know what it is. But we have to figure it out, especially in big games. We can't be giving up points like that in the second half and not scoring in the second half." Wade had tight coverage on the pass Fryfogle caught on him. Wade was even called for pass interference on the play, though it just looked like normal tussling. But on Indiana's other second-half scores, there were clear breakdowns. David Ellis caught a 16-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-10 play in which linebacker Baron Browning said he and an unspecified safety had a miscommunication. "If we don't give up those big plays, you probably run away with this game," Day said. "But we did. You know, 491 yards passing, that's way too much. "We've got to get it fixed." - Columbus Dispatch

  The last time and Ohio State football receiver produced five straight 100-yard games, that player became a consensus All-American. Cris Carter achieved that feat in 1986, prior to an NFL career that led him to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. After another big performance against Indiana, Garrett Wilson is one more 100-yard game shy of matching Wilson's record. Time will tell if he also earns that national recognition, but his breakout sophomore season will certainly include some accolades. A small one came Sunday, when Wilson shared Offensive Player of the Game honors with senior tight end Luke Farrell. Wilson totaled 169 yards and two touchdowns on seven receptions. His 31 receptions and 513 yards lead the Buckeyes, and his four touchdown receptions are tied with Chis Olave for the team lead. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  Oregon State quarterback Tristan Gebbia passed for a touchdown, ran for a touchdown and was on the receiving end of a score in the Beavers' 31-27 victory Saturday over California at Reser Stadium. Gebbia is the first Pac-12 quarterback since 1996 to account for touchdowns via the air, ground and as a receiver. Gebbia's 1-yard touchdown run with 4:30 remaining, set up by Jesiah Irish's blocked punt, gave Oregon State its final lead. California drove to the Beavers' 10 late in the fourth quarter, but on first-and-goal Chase Garbers' pass was tipped by Hamilcar Rashed Jr. and intercepted by fellow linebacker John McCartan. Jermar Jefferson's 65-yard run with just under a minute to go sealed the win for Oregon State (1-2, 1-2 Pacific 12), which opened the season with losses to Washington State and Washington.   Master Teague ran a career-high 169 yards and two touchdowns, Justin Fields accounted for three scores and No. 3 Ohio State held off a comeback bid by Michael Penix Jr., Ty Fryfogle and No. 9 Indiana to win 42-35 on Saturday. The Hoosiers (4-1) rallied from a four-touchdown deficit in the second half and made it a one-score game with 10:26 left, when Penix and Fryfogle connected on a 56-yard touchdown. Penix was 27 for 51 for a career-high 491 yards and five touchdown passes for Indiana. The Buckeyes (4-0) put up 607 yards and led 35-7 early in the second half, but struggled to contain Penix and Fryfogle, who caught seven passes for 218 yards and three touchdowns.

Fields was 18 for 30 for 300 yards and two touchdown passes, but he also threw his first three interceptions of the season and was sacked five times. Garrett Wilson had seven catches for 169 yards - his fourth straight game of 100-plus yards - and two scores for the Buckeyes. The running game helped Ohio State steady maintain control when things were getting dicey. Penix passed for four touchdowns in the second half but also made a critical error, tossing an interception that Ohio State's Shaun Wade returned for a touchdown at the end of the third quarter. Indiana had climbed its highest ranking in the AP Top 25 in more than a half-century, and the Hoosiers had pumped up their confidence by beating conference rivals Penn State, Michigan and Michigan State for the first time in program history. - Ohio State/AP College Football

  Sermon got the ball six times in the first half, and it resulted in 15 yards. Meanwhile, Master Teague ran it seven times for 46 yards and added 31 yards on two catches. Sermon's production isn't what you want from half of a two-back system. Teague finished with 60 yards carries and a score on 12 carries along with three catches for 37 yards. Sermon had 68 yards on 12 carries, most of which came on a 37-yard run before he left the game with an injury. He added an 11-yard catch. Maryland blowing out Penn State shows that it might at the very least be able to put up a fight for 30 minutes before the Buckeyes' talent takes over. Rutgers was Sermon's best chance in these first four games to show why he was brought to Columbus from Oklahoma. Through three games, he has 172 yards on 36 carries. That's enough of a sample size to know whether a two-back system is worth it or if Teague has clearly separated himself. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  Justin Fields threw five touchdown passes and ran for another score to help No. 3 Ohio State beat Rutgers 49-27 on Saturday night. Fields, a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2019, added to his already gaudy 2020 resume, completing 24 of 28 passes for 314 yards. Fields threw two touchdown passes to Chris Olave, with Jameson Williams, Garrett Wilson and Jeremy Ruckert also recipients of scoring passes as the Buckeyes (3-0 Big Ten) played through some sloppiness and held off a second-half push by the Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers (1-2) had a promising drive early to answer Ohio's State's first score but had to settle for a 30-yard Guy Fava field goal. Trailing 35-3 at halftime, Rutgers came out and outscored the Buckeyes 24-14 in the second half. Wilson caught six passes for 104 yards for Ohio State, and Fields completed passes to eight other receivers, and his average completion went for 13 yards. Running backs Master Teague III, Steele Chambers and Trey Sermon pieced together 174 rushing yards, and Teague had a touchdown. Rutgers quarterback Noah Vedral, a graduate transfer from Oklahoma, was 22 of 33 for 168 yards. Bo Melton caught seven passes for 86 yards. Ohio State rolled up 517 yards compared with 373 by Rutgers. - AP College Football

  Shaun Wade has played two games as an outside cornerback for the Ohio State football team, and the coaching staff is pleased with what it's seen. That's even with the three catches the former five-star recruit gave up to Penn State's Jahan Dotson in the Buckeyes' 38-25 win Saturday. Dotson made great plays on the ball, which can happen when you're covering an opposing team's best wide receiver. The bulk of his yards came on those three plays leading to a 144-yard, three-touchdown day on eight catches. "Dotson made some really good plays," OSU coach Ryan Day said. "On those two long ones, I thought Shaun was right there. The kid just made two remarkable catches. That's part of playing corner. They're going to make some catches on you.

"Overall, I thought the first two games they played well. There's some things, maybe, in the last game they'd like to have back, but overall we're getting solid play out of them. If they keep growing and keep working in those spots and keep covering like that, they're going to get some balls." Defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs saw Saturday's win as a learning experience for a secondary that doesn't have a ton of experience. That took another hit when Cameron Brown went down with a season-ending torn Achilles. Coombs is happy with what Wade and Sevyn Banks have done up to this point. Playing cornerback means having a short memory, especially after a wide receiver makes a good play. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  Ohio State football's defense showed improvement in Week 2 in a 38-25 win over Penn State. There are still questions, but the production of the interior defensive linemen isn't one of them. Tommy Togiai put together his career-best game with seven tackles, including three sacks and two quarterback hurries. Those numbers earned him Big Ten Player of the Week honors as he continued the tradition of OSU defensive ends having breakout performances inside Beaver Stadium. Haskell Garrett has joined Togiai as a dominant force on the inside. Garrett has gone from a player not many expected be ready to play at the start of the year after being shot in the face, to a standout on the defense. In two games, he's recorded four tackles and a sack while earning Ohio State's Player of the Game honors for his play against Nebraska. The talk during the preseason focused on the depth at defensive end and how it could mirror 2017. The defensive tackles were more of a question because of the lack of depth compared to last season. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  Two games in, Tommy Togiai is making a bid to emerge as the most important player on Ohio State football's defense. The 6-2, 300-pound junior nose tackle relentlessly bashed through Penn State's offensive line in Saturday's 38-25 victory. His breakthrough performance was one of many along the Buckeyes' defensive front and earned him Defensive Player of the Game honors. Togiai assembled an uncommon stat line for nose tackles. He collected seven tackles with three sacks and two quarterback hurries. His previous career high for tackles was four, and the sacks were the first of his Buckeyes career. With defensive line depth an issue to begin the season, Ohio State needed Togiai to immediately transition from his 2019 depth role to a consistent force in 2020. The pressure he is creating from the interior added an important dimension to a Buckeye defense still forming its identity. - Cleveland Plain Dealer
