Julian Sayin threw three touchdown passes, including a 35-yarder to Jeremiah Smith on a fourth down in the second quarter, and No. 1 Ohio State beat No. 15 Michigan 27-9 in a dominant performance on Saturday. The defending national champion Buckeyes (12-0, 9-0 Big Ten, No. 1 CFP) likely earned a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff. They can keep their top seed with a win against No. 2 Indiana (12-0, 9-0, No. 2 CFP) in the conference championship game Saturday night in Indianapolis. Ryan Day should sleep well, a year after losing The Game when his team was favored by about three touchdowns. The upset extended his losing streak in the series to four games and sparked speculation he might also lose his job.

The Wolverines (9-3, 7-2) started strong with two field goals and an interception on the first three possessions of the game, but couldn't generate pressure when Ohio State wanted to pass. Just Sayin. After throwing an interception on his second snap, the redshirt freshman took advantage of the time and space he had to throw. Sayin was 6 of 6 for 68 yards with two touchdowns on third and fourth down in the first half, including a 4-yard throw to Brandon Inniss with 16 seconds left that made it 17-9 at the break. Ohio State, Indiana, Texas A&M, Georgia and Texas Tech remained the top five teams in the latest College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday, while Oregon jumped ahead of Ole Miss after its win over USC. The Ducks are now No. 6, with Ole Miss at No. 7 - the only change to the top 10 from a week ago. Oklahoma remains at No. 8, followed by Notre Dame at No. 9, Alabama at No. 10 and BYU at No. 11. Miami moved ahead of Utah to No. 12, while the Utes dropped to No. 13 following a come-from-behind 51-47 win over 5-6 Kansas State. Despite the head-to-head win over the Irish, the Hurricanes remain four spots behind in the latest rankings as they push for an at-large spot. Vanderbilt stayed No. 14 while Michigan moved up three spots to No. 15.

Texas is No. 16, USC is No. 17, Virginia is No. 18, Tennessee is No. 19 and Arizona State is No. 20. SMU enters the rankings at No. 21, followed by Pitt, Georgia Tech, Tulane and Arizona. With Rivalry Week set to begin, there could be major ramifications to the rankings. All eyes will be on the Egg Bowl first, when Ole Miss plays Mississippi State on Friday with a possible CFP berth on the line. Coach Lane Kiffin is expected to announce a decision about his future the following day. Julian Sayin threw two touchdown passes despite missing his top two playmakers, Bo Jackson rushed for 110 yards and a pair of scores and top-ranked Ohio State pulled away in the second half for a 42-9 victory over Rutgers on Saturday. The Buckeyes (11-0, 8-0 Big Ten) started off slow with wide receivers Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate sidelined because of injuries. Smith is one of the nation's top receivers with 69 receptions for 902 yards and 10 touchdowns. The sophomore did not play the second half of last week's win over UCLA and appeared to favor his right leg. Tate was sidelined for a third straight game. The junior has 39 catches for 711 yards and seven TDs but has been held out since being injured during pregame warmups at Purdue on Nov. 8 in what coach Ryan Day described as lower leg tightness. Ohio State led 14-3 at halftime but then scored on four consecutive second-half drives to get some breathing room and turn its focus to next week's matchup at rival Michigan. Sayin - who completed 13 of 19 for 157 yards - capped an 11-play, 98-yard drive with a 7-yard TD pass to Brandon Inniss in the back corner of the end zone late in the second quarter to make it 14-3.

It was a perfect pass by Sayin, as Inniss hauled it in near the back pylon while being covered by Rutgers cornerback Jacobie Henderson. Sayin's other TD pass came midway through the third quarter when tight end Max Klare was wide open in the end zone for an 11-yard score to extend the lead to 21-3. Klare was Ohio State's leading receiver with seven catches for 105 yards. With the injuries at receiver, Ohio State had 38 running plays to 22 passing. Jackson had seven carries for 51 yards on his first possession, but fumbled into the end zone. The freshman opened the scoring with 4:01 left in the first quarter on a 15-yard run up the middle. He also had a 10-yard TD late in the third quarter to make it 28-3. CJ Donaldson and James Peoples also had rushing scores. Antwan Raymond had a 1-yard run up the middle in the fourth quarter for Rutgers' lone TD. The 2-point conversion was no good. The sophomore, who came into the game second in the Big Ten in rushing, had 15 carries for 52 yards. Not surprisingly, Ohio State stayed at the top of the rankings, and there was a healthy debate about whether last weekend's action warranted keeping Indiana at No. 2, one spot ahead of Texas A&M. But while those top three remained the same in the Week 2 rankings released Tuesday, it was a game back in August that led the College Football Playoff selection committee to its biggest shakeup. The committee vaulted Miami to No. 15, one spot ahead of Georgia Tech, to hand the Canes the Atlantic Coast Conference's only spot in this week's projected bracket.

That decision came not so much on the strength of last weekend's action, - when Miami easily handled Syracuse and Georgia Tech was idle - but rather, thanks to Miami's season-opening win against Notre Dame. "Certainly, the win versus Notre Dame was a key factor for placing Miami ahead of Georgia Tech," committee chair Mack Rhoades explained. "In general, with the ACC, I think their lack of nonconference signature wins other than Miami over Notre Dame" hurts the conference. Following the trio of undefeateds - Ohio State, Indiana and Texas A&M - were Alabama and Georgia, who rounded out the same top five as in last week's season-opening rankings. - AP College Football

Ohio State standout receiver Carnell Tate sat out Saturday's game against Purdue after suffering a minor undisclosed injury during pregame warmups. Coach Ryan Day said the Buckeyes held Tate out just as a precaution. "[Tate] wanted to play," Day said, "but we've got a lot of football ahead us." The top-ranked Buckeyes (9-0, 6-0 Big Ten) still defeated Purdue 34-10 to remain unbeaten. Jeremiah Smith led Ohio State with a career-high 10 receptions for 137 yards and a touchdown. Julian Sayin threw for 303 yards and one touchdown Saturday and No. 1 Ohio State used four straight scoring drives in the second quarter to pull away from Purdue 34-10. Jeremiah Smith finished with a season-high 10 catches for 137 yards and caught a 35-yard TD pass to break open the game. It was his 10th scoring catch of the season and the 25th of his career, tying him with Santonio Holmes for sixth on the Buckeyes all-time list. Sayin was 27 of 33 with one interception, and C.J. Donaldson Jr. scored the first and final touchdowns of the game for Ohio State - both on 1-yard plunges, "They're business-like, they're growing up every day," Buckeyes coach Ryan Day said when asked how he would describe his team. "I think they're edgy, they're competitive, they know what they want to get done. They've seen it and they have some perspective on it." The defending national champion Buckeyes (9-0, 6-0 Big Ten) extended the nation's longest active winning streak to 13 and remained on pace for a possible Big Ten championship game showdown against No. 2 Indiana. The Hoosiers kept their unbeaten record intact by rallying in the final to earn their first-ever win at Penn State.

Ryan Browne was 10 of 19 for 76 yards and one interception for Purdue (2-7, 0-7), which had only 186 total yards on a day Ohio State more than 40 minutes. The Boilermakers have lost seven straight overall and a school record 16 straight against Big Ten foes. Still, they took a 3-0 lead with a 40-yard field goal late in the first quarter but couldn't respond to Ohio State's second-quarter onslaught. "The second quarter got away from us a bit, the long drive, the takeaway, it's hard to overcome those things against a team like this," coach Barry Odom said. "But I saw some things there. I'm going to keep believing that we're going to get back to those winning ways. Donaldson's first scoring run made it 7-3 less than a minute into the second quarter. Smith's TD catch gave the Buckeyes a 14-3 lead. Ohio State then closed the half with a 3-yard touchdown run from Lincoln Kienholz and a career-long 49-yard field goal from Jayden Fielding in the final 72 seconds of the half to make it 24-3.
