  Ohio State coach Ryan Day said Tuesday night that quarterback Julian Sayin will be out indefinitely after injuring his throwing arm in the fourth quarter Saturday against Indiana. Day did not want to set a timeline for the junior's return, but he left open the possibility that it could be for the rest of the season. "We are putting together a plan for him not being available for the regular season and then also him not being available for the postseason," Day said. "So based on that, if he's not able to return this fall, we're putting a plan together for that as well." The third-ranked Buckeyes (6-1, 4-0 Big Ten) are on their bye week after rallying for a 19-15 victory over sixth-ranked Indiana. That gives Day, offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, and the rest of the coaching staff time to evaluate if Luke Fahey or Tavien St. Clair is the best option at quarterback going into a pivotal primetime test at No. 16 Southern California on Oct. 31.

Day said Fahey has had the edge the past couple of weeks. The freshman played 10 snaps against the Hoosiers and went 0 for 2. Fahey has played three games this season and is 9 of 13 for 203 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. St. Clair, a sophomore, has played two games and is 5 of 7 for 52 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. "Luke has been ahead of Tavian, but now that there is a bye week these guys are going to get plenty of reps," Day said. "We're going to play the guy that gives us the best chance to win. Based on what we've seen in practice the last month, now we have to come up for air and come up with a plan. We're going to need them to win a championship. It's been done before, and it's a challenge to them and the team to pick up the slack for losing Julian." - AP College Football

Smith, who had a combined seven catches for 46 yards in two previous meetings with the Longhorns, had a pair of 43-yard receptions while amassing the second-most receiving yards in a game in his career. He has 2,873 career receiving yards and goes into Saturday's game against Kent State needing 26 to break Michael Jenkins' record of 2,898 from 2000-03. - AP College Football

  Jeremiah Smith had two highlight reel-worthy touchdown catches, Julian Sayin passed for 320 yards and three touchdowns, and top-ranked Ohio State tuned up for next week's matchup against No. 5 Texas with a 56-3 rout of Ball State on Saturday. The Buckeyes (1-0) went three-and-out on their opening drive before finding the end zone on seven of their next nine possessions. Smith had eight receptions for 151 yards, all in the first half. He started Ohio State's scoring with a 48-yard, one-handed, over-the-shoulder grab in the end zone off a play-action pass by Sayin. He extended the Buckeyes' advantage to 28-3 with 10 seconds left in the first half with a 3-yard catch in the back of the end zone.

Sayin completed 21 of 25 passes before coming out midway through the third quarter. He also had the first rushing score of his career on a 3-yard run up the middle on fourth-and-goal to make it 21-0 three minutes into the second quarter. Bo Jackson (65 yards) and Ja'Kobi Jackson (49 yards) added long rushing TDs in the third quarter. Devin McCuin had six catches for 97 yards and a touchdown. Ball State (0-1) got its only points on Brody Boehm's 54-yard field goal with 1:17 remaining in the second quarter.   Julian Sayin threw three touchdown passes, including a 35-yarder to Jeremiah Smith on a fourth down in the second quarter, and No. 1 Ohio State beat No. 15 Michigan 27-9 in a dominant performance on Saturday. The defending national champion Buckeyes (12-0, 9-0 Big Ten, No. 1 CFP) likely earned a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff. They can keep their top seed with a win against No. 2 Indiana (12-0, 9-0, No. 2 CFP) in the conference championship game Saturday night in Indianapolis. Ryan Day should sleep well, a year after losing The Game when his team was favored by about three touchdowns. The upset extended his losing streak in the series to four games and sparked speculation he might also lose his job.

The Wolverines (9-3, 7-2) started strong with two field goals and an interception on the first three possessions of the game, but couldn't generate pressure when Ohio State wanted to pass. Just Sayin. After throwing an interception on his second snap, the redshirt freshman took advantage of the time and space he had to throw. Sayin was 6 of 6 for 68 yards with two touchdowns on third and fourth down in the first half, including a 4-yard throw to Brandon Inniss with 16 seconds left that made it 17-9 at the break.
