When it came time for tight end Cole Kmet's season debut, Notre Dame skipped the hors d'oeuvres. "We put him right in the frying pan," coach Brian Kelly said. On their first play from scrimmage against at No. 3 Georgia before a howling crowd at sold-out Sanford Stadium, quarterback Ian Book connected for an eight-yard gain with Kmet, who had missed No. 10 Notre Dame's first two victories while recuperating from surgery for a broken right collarbone suffered Aug. 8 in practice. "I knew the first play on Thursday," Kmet said of preparations last week. "Coach (Chip) Long (Notre Dame's offensive coordinator) said 'We're going to get you going.' With (Long), if you make a play, he's going to come back to you."

Before the drive was over, Long would call Kmet's number twice more for receptions of 10 and 15 yards. And before the night was over, the 6-foot-5 1/2, 250-pound junior from suburban Chicago would tie a single-game reception record for Fighting Irish tight ends with nine, good for 108 yards and Notre Dame's first touchdown in an eventual 23-17 loss. "It felt good to come out and play well against an opponent like that," Kmet said. "You always appreciate the game more when you get hurt." Ian Book threw a career-high five touchdown passes and Notre Dame's defense came up with three first-half interceptions as the seventh-ranked Fighting Irish rolled past New Mexico 66-14 on Saturday in the final tuneup for a showdown at No. 3 Georgia. The senior Book rebounded from a lackluster opening performance in a 35-17 victory at Louisville to complete 15 of 24 passes for 360 yards. Book finished with another 46 yards rushing yards and a 1-yard TD. He sat the final 1½ quarters. The Fighting Irish (2-0) had their way with the Lobos (1-1), who were without head coach Bob Davie. Saga Tuitele acted as head coach for Davie, the former Irish head coach from 1997-2001 who was hospitalized following New Mexico's opening victory Aug. 31 against Sam Houston State and did not make the trip.

Notre Dame finished with 591 total yards to 363 by New Mexico, which got touchdown runs by Bryson Carroll (47 yards) and Bobby Cole (37). The Lobos outrushed the Irish 212-157. Three of Book's 'long' scoring passes were short throws that receivers turned into big plays. Avery Davis went 59 yards, Javon McKinley went 65 and Chris Finke had a 54-yarder. McKinley added another TD on a 20-yard scoring reception in the third quarter after Chase Claypool had a 37-yard TD reception in Notre Dame's 31-point second quarter. Freshman safety Kyle Hamilton opened the scoring with a 34-yard interception return for a touchdown. There was no formal announcement on Sunday when Jack Coan was named starter at quarterback for 19th-ranked Wisconsin, which opens the season Friday at South Florida. The news came as no surprise, since Coan took the first-team reps in fall camp, ahead of Chase Wolf and highly touted freshman Graham Mertz. The two were co-listed as backups on the depth chart, with Danny Vanden Boom rounding out the group. "There was never really the talk or anything, it's just when the ones go out, I go out," Coan said. "Ever since I got here, I view myself as the starter and put myself in the starter shoes, so I don't think that anything is going to change."

Coan is the only quarterback with significant experience following the departure of three-year starter Alex Hornibrook, who transferred to Florida State in March. Coan, a junior, played in five games last year, starting the last four when Hornibrook was out with a concussion, and threw for 515 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. Book was one of about two dozen college quarterbacks to serve as a counselor for the five-day Manning Passing Academy in Thibodaux, La., in late June. "It was an awesome experience," Book said. Irish coach Brian Kelly noticed a change in Book's demeanor following those five days in Louisiana. Noticed by the way he carried himself around the Gug. Like he REALLY belongs. "You come back, and there's kind of a self-realization that, 'I'm pretty good; I can hang with anybody in the country, and I've got to do these things as well,'" Kelly said. "When you're exposed to elite players, that's always a positive thing. It was a positive experience for him."

He completed 68.2 percent of his passes and threw for 2,628 yards with 19 touchdowns last season. Look for him to make a run to surpass all those numbers this season. He believes he can. "You've got to be confident; you've got to know that you're the best one on the field when you're out there and you can lead this team," Book said. "You've got to consistently tell yourself that." Physically, Book looks different than last season, when he played at 203 pounds. He opened camp listed at 212. The added muscle gives him a confidence to weather the rush for a second or two longer, to get out of the pocket and take on would-be tacklers. Notre Dame sophomore safety Derrik Allen intends to put his name in the transfer portal, a source close to the situation confirmed to the Tribune. Blue and Gold Illustrated first reported the news on Friday. The former four-star recruit out of the 2018 recruiting class never saw the field as a freshman. He watched as now-incumbent starters Alohi Gilman and Jalen Elliott rarely took plays off. In the spring, Allen lined up as the second-team strong safety behind Elliott, a senior.

June-arriving five-star safety Kyle Hamilton dropped Allen to third-team status. As a senior at Marietta (Ga.) Lassiter, Allen tallied 54 solo tackles, seven pass breakups, three interceptions and three tackles for a loss. Rivals considered Allen as its No. 11 safety nationally and No. 135 overall player, while 247Sports slated him No. 12 at the position and No. 161 overall. - South Bend Tribune

Okwara is garnering plenty of national attention based on who he was last year (team-leading 8 sacks and school-record 21 QB hurries). But the old script isn't nearly as impressive as the new one. He's now 6-5, 248 pounds, up from the 241 he was listed at last season. The may not sound like a lot, but it certainly looks like it. What that looked like Thursday was Okwara relentlessly bursting past Notre Dame's best offensive lineman in 2018, right tackle Robert Hainsey, in 11-on-11 practice periods on passing downs. "He's way more physical," said senior Khalid Kareem, Okwara's book end at the other end of the Irish defensive line. "He's using a lot more technique too this year. "He's always been a good technician, but he's honing that skill so much more. Watch out for Julian Okwara." - South Bend Tribune

Notre Dame suffered its first injury to an expected starter of 2019 on Thursday with reports of starting tight end Cole Kmet breaking his collarbone in practice. A broken collarbone is usually a 4-6 week recovery time. If that is how long Kmet is out, it's not ideal, but it's far from disastrous at the same time. That kind of timeframe would likely mean a return in time for Notre Dame's trip to Athens, if not sooner. Brian Kelly has not yet confirmed Kmet's injury, but he will likely have some update on Saturday when he is scheduled to meet with the media.
