  09/10/20 - Shaun CrawfordrSr/2021, Notre Dame, 5-09, 182 (DS#13 FS) + More +

In Saturday's season opener against Duke (2:30 p.m. EDT on NBC), 6-foot-4, 219-pound free safety Kyle Hamilton will roam the secondary alongside 5-foot-9, 180-pound strong safety Shaun Crawford. Despite head coach Brian Kelly repeatedly mentioning Crawford at safety throughout the preseason, the reality of him stepping into the starting lineup at the position to start his sixth season at Notre Dame finally set in with Monday's depth chart release. Crawford, a cornerback for most of his career, worked at safety last preseason too. He was always a reserve option with secondary experience at a position that lacked depth. But the 2020 roster appeared to have other answers at the safety position with junior Houston Griffith settling into the position after switching from cornerback too and Ohio State grad transfer Isaiah Pryor joining the program. Crawford's emergence will keep them waiting. "We didn't come into camp expecting (Crawford) to win it," Kelly said. "We came into camp expecting him to be a placeholder at that position. He came out and won that position. We are a better football team with Shaun playing the position." - South Bend Tribune

They include returning 2019 captains QB Ian Book and OL Robert Hainsey, as well as first-time captains S Shaun Crawford, DL Daelin Hayes and DL Adetokunbo Ogundeji. Book and Hainsey earn the role as rare two-time captains, just the 23rd and 24th Notre Dame players in the program's 131-season history to ever serve multiple seasons as a team captain.   09/05/20 - *Kyren WilliamsrSo/2022, Notre Dame, 5-09, 199 (DS#13 RB) + More +

Left alone to stew in the darkness of his abrupt free fall into an afterthought last fall, Kyren Williams doubled down on who he believed he could be in a Notre Dame uniform someday. In the weeks and months that followed, the now-Notre Dame sophomore running back even managed to exceed his own lofty expectations. On Tuesday during a Zoom conference call with the media, Irish head coach Brian Kelly let the college football world know just how much Williams had exceeded them. "Kyren Williams has really emerged as somebody we feel right now has gained an advantage as the top back right now," Kelly said of a player who had all of five touches as a freshman in 2019 and none after game 2 of that season. "He's going to require, obviously, some assistance at that position from a number of other guys. We're not just going to feature one back. But Kyren's done a great job."

Williams gives Notre Dame a better version of himself than the Irish saw at any time from him as an early enrollee, and an impressive one at that in the time leading up to the 2019 season. He had bulked up to 204 pounds after his senior season in high school, figuring he'd need the extra bulk to absorb the punishing blows from college defenders, and was pushing 210 on his 5-9 frame when he first met up with Stanfield in the spring. "He's in the 193-195 range now," Stanfield said. "But the biggest difference in who he was and who he is now is speed. Straight-line speed. He always had the agility to make people miss, but now he can run away from them, too." - South Bend Tribune

Notre Dame declared Isaiah Robertson as medically disqualified earlier this month. On Tuesday, the former Irish wide receiver entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal. Robertson, a senior, told the Tribune he is seeking a graduate transfer and is on pace to graduate from Notre Dame in December. He said he's uncertain if his medical disqualification will make the transfer process more complicated, but he wants to get his name out there for other colleges. Notre Dame didn't disclose Robertson's injury when it announced his medical disqualification Aug. 12. Robertson did not answer a question sent to him via text message about his injury either. If Robertson can work out a graduate transfer, he could have multiple years of eligibility remaining. He qualified for a redshirt in 2019 by not playing in any games and won't play again this season. The NCAA Division I board of directors also voted last Friday to give all fall sport athletes an additional year of eligibility and an additional year to complete it with a blanket waiver. - South Bend Tribune

On the surface, news of an offensive lineman taking up cooking as a new hobby in his free time could be reason for concern. For Marshall senior offensive lineman Cain Madden, however, it was his way of turning the COVID-19 pandemic into a positive. That positive came in Madden's negative numbers - as in, Madden going from 338 pounds to 313 on account of a diet that consisted of his own cooking and daily workouts. "I really paid attention to my diet," Madden said. "I wasn't doing as much with the football program, but I still worked out and still tried to do as much conditioning as possible. The biggest thing was just dieting and working out."

Madden said he didn't cook much before, but with the added time on his hands in the spring, he searched different recipes online and opted to cook from home, which was safer from a COVID-19 standpoint and healthier in terms of consumption. "Back before, I was really big into going to fast food - quick and easy," Madden said. "I just learned how to cook and I was actually cooking stuff that tasted good and it was healthy for you, so that was the biggest thing." - Charleston Gazette

  08/17/20 - Devyn FordrSr/2025, Notre Dame, 5-11, 189 (DS#107 RB) + More +

Three Penn State football players were charged Monday after university police officers said they found marijuana and LSD in the trio's on-campus apartment. Officers responded about 3:40 p.m. Aug. 2 to sophomore running back Devyn Ford and redshirt freshman offensive linemen Sal Wormley and Caedan Wallace's apartment for a fire alarm, Penn State police wrote in an affidavit of probable cause filed Monday. Police found marijuana "all over the floor" and detected a "very potent" smell of burned weed coming from the apartment, an officer wrote. Marijuana, a grinder and two tabs of LSD were found in Ford's room; weed was found in Wormley's room; and a glass pipe with marijuana residue was found in Wallace's room, police wrote.

A defense lawyer was not listed for either Ford, Wormley or Wallace. The university's athletics department is aware of the charges, a spokesperson wrote in a statement. "These alleged actions do not reflect the values and standards of our program and will be addressed," the athletics department said. "We will not comment any further as this is an ongoing legal matter." - Centre Times

  08/06/20 - Kevin Austin Jr.rJr/2022, Notre Dame, 6-2, 209 (DS#23 WR) + More +

A return to game action for Notre Dame wide receiver Kevin Austin Jr. may be delayed. On Monday, the Irish football program announced Austin, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound junior, suffered a fractured bone in his left foot last Wednesday. The injury required surgery Monday to repair the fifth metatarsal, the longest bone in the smallest toe. The release from Notre Dame said Austin is expected to return to action this fall, but it did not specify a timetable for his recovery. With that limited information and no date announced for Notre Dame's season opener, it's unclear how many games Austin could miss. - South Bend Tribune
