Notre Dame will hold its first spring football practice this Saturday, it was announced Wednesday. The Irish unveiled a plan for 14 spring practices running through April 29. Details for the 15th practice, the Blue Gold-Game, have yet to be released. Head coach Brian Kelly is scheduled to address reporters on Zoom press conferences following Saturday's first practice. The first 14 spring practices will be closed to the media and the public. Notre Dame held only one practice last year on March 5 before the rest of the spring schedule was wiped out due to precautions pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic. - South Bend Tribune

The NFL Scouting Combine won't look the same this year, but Notre Dame will be well-represented in the critical part of the NFL Draft process. Eleven former Notre Dame players were invited to participate in this year's combine: offensive lineman Aaron Banks, Liam Eichenberg, Robert Hainsey, Tommy Kraemer, defensive ends Adetokunbo Ogundeji, Daelin Hayes, wide receivers Javon McKinley and Ben Skowronek, quarterback Ian Book, linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and tight end Tommy Tremble. Only Ohio State, with 14, had more players invited than Notre Dame. Both Alabama and Georgia had 11 players invited as well. - South Bend Tribune

EA Sports announced earlier this month that it plans to bring back its once-popular college football video game franchise. Notre Dame on Monday announced it plans to play hardball in support of its football players. There's a world where those two concepts can peacefully and mutual profitably co-exist, someday. It's just that the NCAA's chronic avoidance of defining the name/image/likeness (NIL) issue in college athletics has added layers of legalese and complications to a seismic shift in the amateur athletics model that was supposed to be implemented in time for the 2021-22 school year. Now there's no clear timeline. And state legislatures, Congress and the Supreme Court will ultimately likely dictate to the NCAA rather than suggest what the next steps are that need to be taken. EA Sports doesn't have a firm timeline either to release its rebranded EA Sports College Football video game, though EA Sports vice president and general manager Daryl Holt told ESPN it wouldn't happen in 2021. - Indianapolis Star/News

  02/02/21 - Nick McCloudrSr/2021, Notre Dame, 6-0, 193 (DS#47 CB) + More +

Nick McCloud made the most of his trip out to Hawaii to play in Sunday's Hula Bowl. The former Notre Dame cornerback intercepted a pair of passes and took home defensive MVP honors for Team Kai in a 15-13 win over Team 'Aina. McCloud was joined by Notre Dame teammate Shaun Crawford in the postseason all-star game and pre-draft showcase at Honolulu's Aloha Stadium. McCloud intercepted one more pass in the Hula Bowl than he did in his one season at Notre Dame. The grad transfer from N.C. State tallied 33 tackles, two tackles for a loss, one interception, eight pass breakups and two fumble recoveries in 12 games with the Irish. McCloud intercepted a pass thrown by former Northwestern quarterback Peyton Ramsey in the second quarter of the Hula Bowl. He later picked off Tulsa's Zach Smith with less than five minutes remaining in the game to slow Team 'Aina's rally attempt. - South Bend Tribune

  01/19/21 - *Kyren WilliamsrSo/2022, Notre Dame, 5-09, 199 (DS#13 RB) + More +

Given how reliable running back Kyren Williams was for Notre Dame football last season, it might be hard to remember that he was still in his freshman year of eligibility. A reminder came Monday when Williams was named to the 2020 Freshman All-America Team by the Football Writers Association of America. The 5-foot-9, 195-pound Williams became only the second offensive player from Notre Dame to make the team since its inception in 2001. Williams gave Notre Dame its second Freshman All-American in as many years following after safety Kyle Hamilton from the previous season. The Irish have now landed eight players on the Freshman All-America Team starting with offensive tackle Sam Young in 2006. Williams rushed 211 times for 1,125 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2020. He also caught 35 passes for 313 yards and one touchdown. - South Bend Tribune

  01/07/21 - Nick McCloudrSr/2021, Notre Dame, 6-0, 193 (DS#47 CB) + More +

For the fifth straight offseason, Notre Dame will look for a new starting boundary cornerback. Nick McCloud announced via social media on Tuesday that he will declare for the NFL Draft. He becomes the latest one-and-done No. 1 boundary corner for the Irish. Notre Dame planned on having McCloud for one season when plucking him as a graduate transfer from N.C. State in June. But the NCAA implemented a new rule in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic stipulating that this season does not count as a year of eligibility. Still, McCloud declined that option. The 6-foot-1, 192-pound McCloud led the Irish with eight pass breakups and claimed third-team All-ACC honors this season. McCloud also tallied 33 tackles, two tackles for a loss, two fumble recoveries and an interception. - South Bend Tribune

  01/04/21 - Jack CoanrSr/2022, Notre Dame, 6-3, 218 (DS#7 QB) + More +

Former Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan says he's transferring to Notre Dame. Coan posted a tweet Monday night that included the Notre Dame logo along with the message, "Extremely thankful for the opportunity. Let's get to work! @NDFootball." Wisconsin disclosed two weeks ago that Coan had entered the transfer portal. Notre Dame and Wisconsin are scheduled to face each other on Sept. 25 at Chicago's Soldier Field.

Notre Dame's 2021 roster was lacking a proven quarterback. The Fighting Irish need to replace three-year starter Ian Book, whose college career ended Friday with a 31-14 loss to Alabama in a College Football Playoff semifinal. Coan made 18 starts for Wisconsin from 2018-19 but injured his right foot in preseason practice this year and underwent surgery. The 6-foot-3 senior from Sayville, New York, suited up for Wisconsin's final three regular-season games but didn't play. Redshirt freshman Graham Mertz has taken over as the Badgers' starting quarterback. - AP College Football

  01/04/21 - Kurt HinishrSr/2022, Notre Dame, 6-2, 302 (DS#55 DT) + More +

A day after Notre Dame's football season came to an end, senior Kurt Hinish affirmed he wasn't ready for his career to do the same. Invoking the NCAA's COVID-19 rule, the two-year starter at nose guard will return to play a fifth season for the Irish in 2021, a source close to the situation confirmed on Saturday. Irish Illustrated was the first to report the news. Because he was a player with expiring eligibility under normal circumstances, Hinish, under the COVID rule, will not count against the NCAA scholarship limit of 85 in 2021. The 6-foot-2, 296-pound Pittsburgh product amassed career highs in tackles (19) and tackles for loss (7.5) in 2020, to go along with two sacks and a QB hurry. - South Bend Tribune
