  04/09/21 - Jarrett PattersonrSr/2023, Notre Dame, 6-5, 306 (DS#6 C) + More +

Even Notre Dame's most experienced offensive lineman, Jarrett Patterson, will be trying a new position. Patterson, who started 21 games at center the past two seasons, will have a chance to become the next great left tackle for Kelly at Notre Dame. But Patterson's switch to left tackle, where he initially was positioned as a freshman reserve, will have to wait until he's completely recovered from a surgery on his left foot that ended his 2020 season. Outland Trophy finalist Liam Eichenberg, who started the last 38 games at left tackle for Notre Dame, thinks the transition will be easy for the 6-foot-5, 305-pound Patterson.

"Football comes natural to him," Eichenberg said. "First camp as a freshman, he was a left tackle behind me and he was amazing. It'll be like nothing ever happened. I don't expect there to be a drop-off at all. "It'll be like I'm still there. It'll be like Mike (McGlinchey) was still there. Jarrett will be one of the next greats. He's a great center and him moving out to tackle, it'll make people realize that he's even a better player than most people think." That's promising praise for Patterson. Offensive line coach Jeff Quinn's comfort level with moving Patterson to left tackle was also predicated on the success junior-to-be Zeke Correll had while playing center when Patterson was injured at the end of last season. The 6-3, 295-pound Correll started two games and can be penciled in as the starting center for 2021. - South Bend Tribune

  04/09/21 - Jayson AdemilolarSr/2023, Notre Dame, 6-3, 280 (DS#31 DT) + More +

To explain the ability of senior defensive tackle Jayson Ademilola, Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly turned to a joke he might have heard at a football coaching clinic. "How do you get guys off blocks?" Kelly said Saturday following Notre Dame's fourth spring practice. "You just yell louder." "Because it's almost an innate ability to do it. Some guys are good at it, some guys not quite as good." Turns out Ademilola falls in the good category. Though Ademilola spent his first three seasons with the Irish as a rotational player, Notre Dame appears to be making room for him in the starting lineup by moving fellow defensive tackle Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa to strongside defensive end. That alignment has repeatedly shown up in video glimpses of spring practice shared by the program.

"He doesn't stay blocked, and he makes plays," Kelly said of Ademilola. "He makes tackles. That's a mark of a good player. He's a guy that grades out very high. When he's in there, he's been very, very efficient as a football player for us." The senior-to-be Ademilola might be riding the momentum with which he finished a turbulent 2020 season. He made his first two career starts in October against Florida State and Louisville while Tagovailoa-Amosa was limited. Then Ademilola was forced to miss three games due a torn meniscus in one of his knees suffered against Clemson in November. - Indianapolis Star News

  04/06/21 - Braden LenzyrSr/2023, Notre Dame, 5-11, 182 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Grad senior Avery Davis, Notre Dame's lone returning starter among the three wide receiver spots, continues his ascent that follows a breakthrough season in 2020. The other two wide receivers who have caught Kelly's eye are coming off enigmatic showings last season, in part due to injuries - seniors Braden Lenzy (7 catches, 63 yards, 1 TD) and Lawrence Keys III (5 catches, 51 yards). "I think what we've been looking for is consistency in performance," Kelly said. "Now this is only practice 4, so I'm going to put an asterisk next to them, but Lenzy and Keys have has been really good. "Now, they have to be consistent, because that has been the area that they haven't been for us. They haven't been consistent. But they made a commitment in the weight room that is different from what we've seen in the past. "These guys have been outstanding in the weight room, and you can see it in the way they're translating that onto the field. They're explosive. They're running outs. They're breaking tackles. You can see in the way they're practicing and playing." - South Bend Tribune

  03/31/21 - Avery DavisrSr/2023, Notre Dame, 5-11, 199 (DS#182 WR) + More +

The path to this spring couldn't have been less predictable for Avery Davis. When he signed with Notre Dame as a quarterback out of Cedar Hill (Texas) High in 2017, he didn't imagine he would be the most experienced wide receiver on the Irish roster heading into the 2021 season. "I never would have predicted that, especially coming in 2017," Davis said. "If someone would have told me that, I would have told them they were foolish." Not only has Davis played in more games (31) than any other skill player on the Irish offense, he has more career receptions (38) than the next two wide receivers behind him: seniors-to-be Braden Lenzy (18) and Lawrence Keys III (17). But a former three-star quarterback switching positions isn't unheard of in college football. What makes Davis' journey so remarkable is the number of dead ends that led to him finally finding a home a wide receiver. - South Bend Tribune

Notre Dame will hold its first spring football practice this Saturday, it was announced Wednesday. The Irish unveiled a plan for 14 spring practices running through April 29. Details for the 15th practice, the Blue Gold-Game, have yet to be released. Head coach Brian Kelly is scheduled to address reporters on Zoom press conferences following Saturday's first practice. The first 14 spring practices will be closed to the media and the public. Notre Dame held only one practice last year on March 5 before the rest of the spring schedule was wiped out due to precautions pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic. - South Bend Tribune

The NFL Scouting Combine won't look the same this year, but Notre Dame will be well-represented in the critical part of the NFL Draft process. Eleven former Notre Dame players were invited to participate in this year's combine: offensive lineman Aaron Banks, Liam Eichenberg, Robert Hainsey, Tommy Kraemer, defensive ends Adetokunbo Ogundeji, Daelin Hayes, wide receivers Javon McKinley and Ben Skowronek, quarterback Ian Book, linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and tight end Tommy Tremble. Only Ohio State, with 14, had more players invited than Notre Dame. Both Alabama and Georgia had 11 players invited as well. - South Bend Tribune

  02/22/21 - *Kyren WilliamsrSo/2022, Notre Dame, 5-09, 199 (DS#13 RB) + More +

EA Sports announced earlier this month that it plans to bring back its once-popular college football video game franchise. Notre Dame on Monday announced it plans to play hardball in support of its football players. There's a world where those two concepts can peacefully and mutual profitably co-exist, someday. It's just that the NCAA's chronic avoidance of defining the name/image/likeness (NIL) issue in college athletics has added layers of legalese and complications to a seismic shift in the amateur athletics model that was supposed to be implemented in time for the 2021-22 school year. Now there's no clear timeline. And state legislatures, Congress and the Supreme Court will ultimately likely dictate to the NCAA rather than suggest what the next steps are that need to be taken. EA Sports doesn't have a firm timeline either to release its rebranded EA Sports College Football video game, though EA Sports vice president and general manager Daryl Holt told ESPN it wouldn't happen in 2021. - Indianapolis Star/News

  02/02/21 - Nick McCloudrSr/2021, Notre Dame, 6-0, 193 (DS#47 CB) + More +

Nick McCloud made the most of his trip out to Hawaii to play in Sunday's Hula Bowl. The former Notre Dame cornerback intercepted a pair of passes and took home defensive MVP honors for Team Kai in a 15-13 win over Team 'Aina. McCloud was joined by Notre Dame teammate Shaun Crawford in the postseason all-star game and pre-draft showcase at Honolulu's Aloha Stadium. McCloud intercepted one more pass in the Hula Bowl than he did in his one season at Notre Dame. The grad transfer from N.C. State tallied 33 tackles, two tackles for a loss, one interception, eight pass breakups and two fumble recoveries in 12 games with the Irish. McCloud intercepted a pass thrown by former Northwestern quarterback Peyton Ramsey in the second quarter of the Hula Bowl. He later picked off Tulsa's Zach Smith with less than five minutes remaining in the game to slow Team 'Aina's rally attempt. - South Bend Tribune

Safety Houston Griffith plans to return to Notre Dame after spending time in the transfer portal, a source confirmed to the Tribune. As a true freshman, Griffith emerged as Notre Dame's No. 1 nickelback. He recorded 14 tackles and two pass breakups through 11 games. Bouncing between cornerback and safety in 2019, Griffith tallied five tackles and a pass breakup across 13 games. - South Bend Tribune

  01/19/21 - *Kyren WilliamsrSo/2022, Notre Dame, 5-09, 199 (DS#13 RB) + More +

Given how reliable running back Kyren Williams was for Notre Dame football last season, it might be hard to remember that he was still in his freshman year of eligibility. A reminder came Monday when Williams was named to the 2020 Freshman All-America Team by the Football Writers Association of America. The 5-foot-9, 195-pound Williams became only the second offensive player from Notre Dame to make the team since its inception in 2001. Williams gave Notre Dame its second Freshman All-American in as many years following after safety Kyle Hamilton from the previous season. The Irish have now landed eight players on the Freshman All-America Team starting with offensive tackle Sam Young in 2006. Williams rushed 211 times for 1,125 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2020. He also caught 35 passes for 313 yards and one touchdown. - South Bend Tribune

  01/07/21 - Nick McCloudrSr/2021, Notre Dame, 6-0, 193 (DS#47 CB) + More +

For the fifth straight offseason, Notre Dame will look for a new starting boundary cornerback. Nick McCloud announced via social media on Tuesday that he will declare for the NFL Draft. He becomes the latest one-and-done No. 1 boundary corner for the Irish. Notre Dame planned on having McCloud for one season when plucking him as a graduate transfer from N.C. State in June. But the NCAA implemented a new rule in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic stipulating that this season does not count as a year of eligibility. Still, McCloud declined that option. The 6-foot-1, 192-pound McCloud led the Irish with eight pass breakups and claimed third-team All-ACC honors this season. McCloud also tallied 33 tackles, two tackles for a loss, two fumble recoveries and an interception. - South Bend Tribune

  01/04/21 - Jack CoanrSr/2022, Notre Dame, 6-3, 218 (DS#7 QB) + More +

Former Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan says he's transferring to Notre Dame. Coan posted a tweet Monday night that included the Notre Dame logo along with the message, "Extremely thankful for the opportunity. Let's get to work! @NDFootball." Wisconsin disclosed two weeks ago that Coan had entered the transfer portal. Notre Dame and Wisconsin are scheduled to face each other on Sept. 25 at Chicago's Soldier Field.

Notre Dame's 2021 roster was lacking a proven quarterback. The Fighting Irish need to replace three-year starter Ian Book, whose college career ended Friday with a 31-14 loss to Alabama in a College Football Playoff semifinal. Coan made 18 starts for Wisconsin from 2018-19 but injured his right foot in preseason practice this year and underwent surgery. The 6-foot-3 senior from Sayville, New York, suited up for Wisconsin's final three regular-season games but didn't play. Redshirt freshman Graham Mertz has taken over as the Badgers' starting quarterback. - AP College Football
