  Quran Gossett rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns, Ty Pennington threw for 262 yards and a touchdown, and FCS No. 15 Northern Arizona defeated Portland State 31-17 on Saturday. The Lumberjacks (4-1, 1-0 Big Sky) won their conference opener on the road for the first time since 2017, and their record through five games is their best since 2012. Portland State (0-5, 0-1) had won two straight games against NAU. NAU scored on their first four drives to take a 24-10 lead into the half and allowed no offensive scores in the second half. Portland State's lone points of the second half came on a 57-yard punt return by Jordan Herron. Gossett had a 29-yard touchdown rush for NAU's longest scoring play early in the fourth quarter. The Lumberjacks held Portland State to 325 yards of offense, and forced turnovers on downs on the last two Portland State drives. John-Keawe Sagapolutele was 18-for-36 passing for 202 yards and one touchdown for the Vikings. - AP College Football

  WEEK 4 BIG SKY CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ty Pennington, Northern Arizona (QB, Jr., Sand Springs, Okla.),...Northern Arizona's Ty Pennington threw for a career-high three touchdowns in the 31-23 win over ranked Incarnate Word, passing for 286 yards on the day. Pennington had touchdown passes of 33, 46, and 30 yards on the day, with his 46-yarder being a Hail Mary at the end of the half to put NAU up 21-10 going into the break.   Ty Pennington threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns to help Northern Arizona beat Incarnate Word 31-23 on Saturday. Pennington went 17 of 34 for 286 yards with scoring throws to Jayson Raines, Myseth Currie and Jeter Purdy. Kolbe Katsis added four catches for 95 yards as Northern Arizona averaged 16.8 yards per reception. Pennington's first-quarter strike made it 7-0, he added another in the second, and a short rushing score before halftime pushed the margin to 21-10.

After Incarnate Word cut it to 21-16 in the third, Pennington answered with a deep shot to Currie for a 28-16 lead. Samuel Hunsaker made a 50-yard field goal with 1:54 left in the fourth to cap the scoring. Incarnate Word's EJ Colson finished 28 of 36 for 292 yards with two touchdowns to Jameson Garcia, who caught nine passes for 120 yards. The Cardinals ran for 144 yards on 28 carries, led by Colson's 59. Northern Arizona held the Cardinals to six points in the third. - AP College Football

He set career-highs in passing yards and passing touchdowns, while also adding a touchdown on the ground. Pennington was impressive on the game-winning drive, leading NAU on a 13-play, 79-yard drive spanning nearly four minutes for the go-ahead touchdown with 29 seconds left.   Ty Pennington threw for 366 yards and three touchdowns as Northern Arizona survived a furious fourth-quarter rally to edge Southern Utah 50-49 on Saturday. Pennington connected with Kolbe Katsis for two long scores, including an 88-yard strike that highlighted a 28-point third quarter for the Lumberjacks (1-1). Katsis finished with 135 yards on six catches. Northern Arizona built a 49-28 lead behind Pennington and a balanced run game paced by Seth Cromwell who rushed for 87 yards and two touchdowns. Quran Gossett added a score on the ground as part of the Lumberjacks' four rushing touchdowns.

Southern Utah (1-1) nearly erased the deficit behind running back Joshua Dye, who carried 25 times for 171 yards and four touchdowns. The Thunderbirds added a 95-yard kickoff return score by Ran Sawyer to fuel a 21-point final quarter. Bronson Barron threw for 269 yards and a touchdown for Southern Utah, but the Thunderbirds' comeback fell just short as NAU held on after surrendering 21 straight points late. - AP College Football

  Ty Pennington passed for a touchdown and ran for another and Jaylan Wesley made two big interceptions as Northern Arizona held off Utah Tech 38-31 on Saturday. Wesley returned an interception 39 yards to the Highlanders' 5-yard line that set up Seth Cromwell's second touchdown run for a 24-7 lead. Cromwell scored on a 2-yard run for the Lumberjacks' first points. Utah Tech (1-1) scored twice in the fourth quarter to get within seven points and got the ball back with 1:34 left on its own 15 but Wesley picked off Reggie Graf to end the threat.

Pennington was 21 of 28 for 229 yards passing, with a touchdown and an interception for NAU (1-1). Kolbe Katsis had a 49-yard TD reception for a 31-10 halftime lead and finished with 82 yards receiving on three catches. Graff threw for 75 yards and ran for 74 more, including two touchdowns. Bronson Barben threw for a TD and was picked off twice. NAU, ranked 14th in the FCS coaches poll, won its eighth straight home game, tying a school record set over the 1978 and 1979 seasons. - AP College Football

  2022 MIAA FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: Kolbe Katsis, Wide Receiver and Kick/Punt Returner, Pittsburg State,...Playing his first season at PSU, Kolbe Katsis ranked second in the MIAA with 28.1 yards per kick return and was third in the league with 394 total kick return yards. He also recorded the second-longest kick return of the season at 71 yards. A wide receiver, Katsis ranked 13th in the league this season with 40.9 rushing yards per game. The 6-1 redshirt freshman from Owasso, Okla. played in every game for the Gorillas, recording 450 total receiving yards on 20 receptions.   SEPT 5 OVC CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Devon Starling, RB, 6-1, 210, Jr., Nashville, Tenn., Tennessee State,...Playing at No. 12 Eastern Washington, Starling rushed for the most yards against a Division I opponent this season (FBS or FCS) with 207 yards. He had 25 rushes to averaged 8.3 yards per carry and also caught three passes for finish the game with 230 all-purpose yards. He had a 43-yard touchdown run at the end of the first quarter to give TSU a 19-15 lead. Starling had seven rushes of more than 10 yards in the game.   Boise State has lost three players to the transfer portal in recent weeks, and a local player left the team. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Jalen Richmond was the latest player to announce he was transferring. He didn't appear in any games last season after joining the program as a three-star recruit from Chandler High School in Arizona. Former four-star recruit Casey Kline is also in the portal. He joined the Broncos in 2019 as an edge rusher but didn't see much playing time and moved to tight end in the spring. Offensive lineman Jacob Golden is also transferring after he was suspended from the team following a DUI arrest in June. - Idaho Statesman

  2022 PRESEASON BIG SKY FOOTBALL ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM: S Morgan Vest (NAU),...A unanimous All-Big Sky First Team selection following the spring season, Vest followed up his abbreviated debut season with an even more impressive fall. Leading the Lumberjacks with 106 tackles, Vest ranked inside the Top 25 of the FCS while tying for the fourth-most tackles in a single season at Northern Arizona. Adding 5 interceptions, 4.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery, Vest's impact was seen all over the field.   2022 PRESEASON ALL-OHIO VALLEY FOOTBALL (COACHES): RB Devon Starling, Tennessee State,...Starling followed his Co-Freshman of the Year honors by earning second-team All-OVC honors this year. He was injured in the next-to-last game of the year (which limited him to just 15 carries and 39 yards over the final two games) but still finished the year ranked 45th nationally with 800 total rushing yards and three touchdowns. Starling also caught 37 passes (for 312 yards) which was the most on the team, 5th most among all players in the OVC, and tied for 1st among all running backs. That mark was eighth among all FCS running backs. Against OVC champion UT Martin, he rushed for 78 yards and a touchdown and caught 12 passes for 117 yards; the 12 receptions was the most of any FCS running back in a game this season. - Tennessee State Football

  With a little over a month to go before the start of training camp, the Arizona football roster is all but set. The Wildcats are expected to have 54 new players - nearly half their projected roster of 112-113 - when they open camp Aug. 3, UA coach Jedd Fisch said. All those players have joined the program since early signing day in December. Arizona also has taken advantage of changes to how scholarships can be allocated. Linebackers Ammon Allen and Dante Smith have received scholarships. Fisch added that he expects "no surprises" in terms of the roster between now and August. - Arizona Star News

  2021 OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE SECOND-TEAM (COACHES): RB - Devon Starling, Tennessee State,...Coming off the OVC Freshmen of the Year Award, Starling continued to amaze and with the leadership of a Heisman Trophy winner calling the shots, he finished with 848 yards in 180 attempts. Starling found the end zone three times with an average of 72.73 yards/carry. Starling rushed for 100+ yards in three games (Kentucky State; 142, Austin Peay; 120 and Eastern Illinois; 122). The Antioch product also contributed as a receiver with 312 yards on 37 catches. His best performance was at UT Martin where he made 12 catches for 117 yards. - Tennessee State Football
