Former Arkansas defensive lineman Enoch Jackson announced his transfer destination Tuesday. Jackson, the second Razorbacks player to announce plans to transfer from Arkansas following spring practices, has committed to North Texas, according to a post to his Twitter account. He stated plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal on April 21. Jackson (6-0, 298 pounds) was in competition for playing time at defensive tackle during the spring, but Isaiah Nichols, Taurean Carter, Eric Gregory, who has a combo role at end and tackle, and others appeared to be ahead of him in the depth chart. He played in three games over the last two seasons - against Mississippi State and Western Kentucky in 2019, and against LSU in 2020. He did not record any statistics. Jackson finished the Razorbacks' spring game on April 17 with 5 tackles, 2 tackles for loss and 1 sack for the Red team. - Northwest Arkansas Times

The North Texas draft drought is finally over. Jaelon Darden, a diminutive wide receiver whose rare combination of talent and drive made him one of the best players in Mean Green history, etched his name into program lore yet again on Saturday. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Darden with the 24th pick in the fourth round of the NFL draft, bringing one of the more baffling slumps in college sports to a close. UNT had not had a player selected since the Oakland Raiders picked linebacker Cody Spencer in the sixth round in 2004. Hundreds of players have pulled on a Mean Green uniform since, including linebackers Zach Orr and Craig Robertson as well as running back Lance Dunbar. All three UNT legends are among a host of players who went on to the NFL after their time with the Mean Green. And yet, it was Darden, a 5-foot-8 slot receiver with blazing speed, elite quickness and an insatiable work ethic who finally broke the longest draft drought in major college football. - Denton Record

Another Arkansas football player has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Enoch Jackson, a redshirt sophomore defensive tackle, announced his intent to leave the Razorbacks program on Wednesday. He becomes the second player to transfer since the end of spring practices. Wide receiver Mike Woods, who was expected to be among Arkansas' top playmakers in 2021, said Tuesday he is entering the transfer portal as a graduate transfer. Jackson, 6-0, 298 pounds, was in competition for playing time at defensive tackle during the spring, but Isaiah Nichols, Taurean Carter, Eric Gregory, who has a combo role at end and tackle, and others appeared to be ahead of him in the depth chart.   Oklahoma has released Chandler Morris from his national letter of intent. Finally. OU coach Lincoln Riley informed Morris on Friday that OU would release Morris from his NLI, a source confirmed. OU had refused to release Morris from his NLI much of this offseason, creating a stir nationally. Riley talked about his belief that student athletes should not be able to transfer within conference without consequence. Those comments came before the Big 12 agreed to waive its intraconference rules requiring players to sit out one season earlier this week. The NCAA also adopted rules that will allow student athletes the opportunity to transfer one time without penalty. OU and Riley relented after the new policies were announced. Morris is expected to compete for the backup job behind starting quarterback Max Duggan this season. - Fort Worth Star

North Texas landed North Carolina graduate transfer quarterback Jace Ruder who will have a chance to compete for the starting job when he arrives on campus over the summer. Ruder will get his shot. UNT rotated Aune and Jason Bean at quarterback last season, when neither seized control of the starting job. Bean has since left for Kansas. Ruder will have to get up to speed quickly once he arrives at UNT. He's more than capable. "Everyone is different," Littrell said. "The guy we are bringing in has experience at the Power Five level. It won't be the speed of the game that will be different. It depends on how quickly he can learn the system. He is a talented guy. We are hoping he can help us in the future." There is no way UNT goes out and grabs a graduate transfer quarterback without giving him a chance to show what he has to offer in a game. - Denton Record

When it comes to players who could come out of nowhere in 2021 among UNT's defensive linemen, though, look no further than Ta'Shoyn Johnson. The Killeen native didn't make a huge impact as a freshman last fall. He finished with two tackles, but he did gain experience while playing in all 10 of UNT's games. He started twice. Johnson saw plenty of time during UNT's spring game last week, a sign that he has progressed since last season and begun to capitalize on his potential. The 6-foot-1, 299-pound freshman was rated as a three-star prospect coming out of high school and had scholarship offers from Tulsa, New Mexico and Nevada. UNT is counting on the top players from its last two recruiting classes that were ranked No. 2 among Conference USA schools by 247Sports to bolster a defense that allowed 42.8 points per game last season. Johnson was among a host of highly regarded defensive prospects in those classes. - Denton Record

Jaelon Darden has maintained focus on his dream of reaching the NFL throughout his football journey. Staying on that day-to-day grind has put Darden in position to become the first North Texas player selected in the NFL draft since 2004 heading into his pro day on Thursday. The Houston native has rarely looked forward toward what it will be like to live out his NFL dreams. Tuesday was one of those days. "I'm definitely going to shed a couple of tears because I've been working hard and did it with my best friend in my life, which is my dad," Darden said during a press conference ahead of his pro day. "That's going to be the hardest part. I can't share that moment with him, but I can share it with my mom and my little brother." Darden's father, Manya Darden, died of a heart condition over the summer.

Darden played his senior season with his father on his mind and put together one of the greatest campaigns in program history. He caught a program record 19 touchdown passes in just nine games and finished his career as UNT's career leader in receptions (230), receiving yards (2,782) and receiving touchdowns (38). "He's one of the best players I've coached offensively," UNT coach Seth Littrell said. "He's meant a lot to this program as a player and a lot to me as a person. "I look at him as a not only a great player but also a close friend." - Denton Record

Former Oklahoma quarterback Chandler Morris transferred to TCU following his freshman season but has yet to be released by OU. TCU head coach Gary Patterson was asked of Morris' status earlier this week, which currently won't allow him to be eligible for the 2021 season. OU coach Lincoln Riley addressed his program's decision, which he noted had nothing specifically to do with Morris but rather a view his staff holds when players transfers to other Big 12 schools. "This particular situation for us is about something that we believe in," Riley said. "Myself, the leadership here at OU, we think it's unhealthy for college football to encourage intraconference transfers."

Riley said he isn't against student-athletes transferring to programs outside of their current conference and becoming eligible right away. He noted the Sooners immediately released freshman tight end Jalin Conyers, who transferred to Arizona State this offseason. "I do think the intraconference can complicate things and the world of coaches understand the big picture and understand that's gonna bring along a lot of negatives that I just don't know that we want in this game," Riley said. - Norman Transcript

Oklahoma has not released former quarterback Chandler Morris from his national letter of intent. Morris entered the NCAA's transfer portal after spending his true freshman season with the Sooners in 2020 and opted to join the Frogs a few days later. At the time, nobody knew if Morris would be eligible to play this fall. That hasn't changed in two-plus months since he arrived in Fort Worth. "We don't know yet on Chandler," Patterson said on Monday. "It looks like rules are going to change here real quickly. He still hasn't been released by Oklahoma." There's multiple steps in the process for Morris to gain eligibility next fall, starting with OU releasing Morris from his national letter of intent because Morris is in his first year. If the Sooners do that, then TCU can pursue an immediate eligibility waiver for Morris from the NCAA. The caveat to the waiver is whether the NCAA will adopt a policy allowing one-time transfers. If it does, TCU and Morris would not need to go through the waiver process. - Fort Worth Star

Jonah Johnson rushed for two first downs to keep a final drive alive and Juwan Price scored the winning touchdown from 13 yards out as New Mexico State won a see-saw battle with Division I newcomer Dixie State 35-29 on Sunday. Price took a handoff straight up the middle, finishing with 165 yards on 20 carries for the Aggies (1-1). Johnson finished with 171 yards passing and picked up 28 of his 53-yards rushing on the game-winning drive. Where New Mexico State may have been thunder, pounding out 329 yards on the ground, Dixie State (1-1) was lightning, coming from eight points down into a 29-29 tie in a single play from scrimmage. - New Mexico State/AP College Football

One of the biggest turn of events in the offseason for UNT was defensive tackle Dion Novil electing to use the additional season of eligibility granted by the NCAA. The Abilene native was a first-team All-Conference USA selection last season. Littrell talked to Novil about his options at the end of the year. "The biggest thing is just educating any player who has the option or the goals of reaching the NFL and making sure that he's in the right position," Littrell said. Novil played the nose tackle spot last season. He'll have the chance to move around and be more of a playmaker in Bennett's scheme. Bennett said earlier this spring that he would like to see Novil drop weight and be more mobile and active this year. Novil was listed at 330 pounds last season. "Some players will be in some different positions," Littrell said. "Our guys have been very receptive about doing whatever it takes and trusting the coaches to put them in the right position to be successful." - Denton Record

Kameron Hill had quite the game against North Texas during his junior season at Abilene Christian. The defensive end posted two sacks, forced two fumbles and was credited with three tackles for loss in UNT's 51-31 win in 2019. Afterward, Hill met Riley Mayfield, a former ACU standout who transferred to UNT and finished his career with the Mean Green the previous year. Hill made his decision to transfer to UNT official late Saturday with an announcement on his Twitter account. - Denton Record

North Texas has received plenty of good news since its loss to Appalachian State in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. Arguably the best of that news was defensive tackle Dion Novil's decision to take advantage of the NCAA granting players an additional season of eligibility due to the coronavirus pandemic. Novil was a first-team All-Conference USA selection and was the only UNT representative on the first- or second-team defense. The senior could have headed off to chase his NFL dreams but elected to return for another season with the Mean Green. UNT needs all the help it can get after allowing 42.8 points per game heading into its first season under new coordinator Phil Bennett. Novil will give UNT a place to start as it looks to rebuild. The Abilene native anchored the middle of UNT's defense and is one of a handful of key players who are set to return up front. - Denton Record

Tyrae Thornton knew something wasn't right late last summer. The Houston native was sick and thought he might have COVID-19, putting the status of his junior season at Rice in doubt. Thornton found out later that he had mononucleosis and opted to sit out the season. That choice was the first step in a journey that led to the 6-foot cornerback landing at North Texas as a graduate transfer. Thornton announced his decision to transfer to UNT on his Twitter account Thursday. He will graduate from Rice in May and enroll at UNT over the summer. UNT entered the offseason looking to rebuild a defense that allowed 42.8 points per game last season. - Denton Record
