2020 BRONKO NAGURSKI TROPHY PRESEASON WATCH LIST: DT Dion Novil, North Texas,...Novil is coming off the most productive season of his career on his way to all-conference honorable mention honors. He finished with 61 total tackles, 13.0 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks at nose tackle in 2019 for the Mean Green. Throughout his career in Denton, Novil has appeared in 29 games, posting 98 tackles, 20.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks. He was a major factor on the interior and over the course of his career has shown a lot of versatility, having played on the edge as well, earlier in his career.   2020 PRESEASON BILETNIKOFF AWARD WATCH LIST: Jaelon Darden, North Texas,...Darden, a 2019 first team all-conference selection by the league's 14 head coaches, led the Mean Green in every major receiving category and was among the nation's most productive receivers. He finished with 76 receptions for 736 yards and 12 touchdowns. His 12 receiving scores ranked 12th in FBS (his 12 touchdowns were three more than anyone else in the conference), and he ranked 21st in the country in receptions per game (6.3). Darden tied for the most three-touchdown games by any receiver in the country with two.

Darden is fourth in program history in single season receiving touchdowns and his 76 catches tied for fifth-most in a single season in program history (John Love, 1965). Darden concluded his junior season with 156 career catches, which ranks sixth in program history, and his 19 career touchdowns are seventh in program history. An explosive talent from the slot, Darden enters 2020 as one of two seniors among a deep receiving corps and will look to continue to build on his fantastic career in Denton. - North Texas Football

Defensive tackle Dion Novil and kicker Ethan Mooney were both named to Phil Steele's preseason All-Conference USA first team recently, further cementing their status as key figures in North Texas' hopes to rebound after a tough season last fall. UNT had nine players selected to the squad that includes first, second, third and fourth teams. Three of the Mean Green's selections are specialists. Kick returner Deion Hair-Griffin was a second-team pick, while deep snapper Nate Durham was a third-team selection. Wide receiver Jaelon Darden was a second-team pick. - Denton Record

Jordan Rucker is coming home to play for North Texas. The former Ryan cornerback spent the last two seasons at Purdue before electing to transfer. "Coming home to North Texas to play football was the best decision for my family and I," Rucker wrote. "Having the opportunity to play with old teammates and having familiar faces around me is what I am looking forward to the most. I can't wait to get it rollin!!!" Rucker redshirted in his first season at Purdue and appeared in five games as a reserve in 2019. He will sit out the upcoming season as a transfer and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining beginning in 2021.

Rucker was rated as a three-star prospect in the class of 2018 by 247Sports coming out of Ryan and was offered a scholarship by a dozen teams, including UNT, SMU and New Mexico. UNT has brought on a series of Division I transfers in Seth Littrell's four seasons as the Mean Green's head coach. Nick Harvey started at cornerback last season for UNT after transferring from South Carolina. Offensive lineman D'Andre Plantin also played a key role after coming to UNT as a graduate transfer from Virginia Tech. - Denton Record

The former walk-on came to UNT as a wide receiver before moving to tight end ahead of last season. The switch helped Pirtle emerge as a key weapon for the Mean Green. He finished with 17 catches for 263 yards and five touchdowns last season on his way to earning honorable mention All-C-USA honors. Pirtle is in line to move into the starting lineup in his senior season and will be better prepared to contribute after bulking up. - Denton Record

Sanders made a combined seven starts as a junior at the nickel and safety spots for UNT last season. He finished with 38 tackles, an interception and three pass breakups. The Mean Green lost Muhammad and Taylor Robinson, their top two safeties, after last season. Sanders should see his role expand this year. - Denton Record

Seth Littrell has never lacked confidence when it comes to predicting success for North Texas since taking over the program ahead of the 2016 season. Littrell said his goal heading into his debut campaign was to win a bowl game. The Mean Green haven't always hit those marks but have enjoyed a whole lot of success since while playing in the postseason three of the last four years. Littrell was at it again leading up to last week's NFL draft. UNT hasn't had a player selected since 2004, when the Oakland Raiders snapped up linebacker Cody Spencer in the sixth round.

The Mean Green had the longest drought in major college football heading into this year's draft and saw the slump drag on another year when it didn't have a player among the 255 picked. The event wrapped up on Saturday. "It will happen," Littrell said of the program breaking through. "We have done a good job evaluating in recruiting and have talented players on our roster. Hopefully it will happen pretty quickly. It would mean a lot." - Denton Record

Fine will go down as one of the best players and best all-around guys to ever play for the Mean Green. He threw for 12,505 yards and 93 touchdowns in his career. Both totals are program records, as is his career passing efficiency rating of 140.68. If it was all about talent and character in the NFL draft, Fine would be a no-brainer selection. Unfortunately for Fine, size also comes into play. Fine never would have ended up at UNT if he wasn't undersized. He showed he could excel at the college level at his listed size of 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds at UNT. It looks like the tape measure may have finally caught up with Fine at the Shrine Game and sunk his draft hopes. Fine measured in at 5-9 and 189 pounds. His hands measured at under nine-inches. Those figures will make it highly unlikely that a team takes a chance on drafting Fine. He wasn't invited to the scouting combine, and UNT's pro day was wiped out by the spread of COVID-19, which didn't help matters. - Denton Record

The Corrigan native was a first-team All-Conference USA selection in 2018, and was also a member of the all-freshman team in 2016. - North Texas Football
