UNT returns several defensive linemen who contributed in 2022 and could take another step forward next season. Vailea posted 44 tackles last season, when Brown added 40 tackles and 4.0 sacks. Johnson finished with 3.5 sacks. Each of those players should benefit from an additional year in UNT's strength and conditioning program. UNT needs those players to make a significant jump as it prepares to move from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference. The challenge for most programs that move to a higher-level league is competing in the trenches. - Denton Record

North Texas landed Baylor transfer kicker Noah Rauschenberg on Wednesday. He could help fill the void after UNT lost Ethan Mooney to graduation. North Texas leaned on a long line of standout kickers over the last several years, from Trevor Moore to Cole Hedlund and most recently Ethan Mooney. UNT may have landed the next player in that line on Wednesday when former Baylor kicker Noah Rauschenberg committed to continue his career with the Mean Green. Rauschenberg spent four seasons at Baylor and was a two-time, first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection. He was primarily a kickoff specialist and saw 57 of his 75 kickoffs downed for touchbacks last season. - Denton Record

North Texas quarterback Austin Aune said before the 2022 season began that it would be his final year playing college football. There were a few twists along the way, but that is exactly where the former Argyle standout ended up on Monday, when he declared for the NFL draft. Aune made the announcement on his Instagram account just days after a standout season that saw him guide UNT to an appearance in the Conference USA championship game and the Frisco Bowl.

The announcement ended what will be remembered as one of the more unusual and memorable careers for a UNT player - and for a college football player in general. The former Argyle standout spent six seasons playing minor league baseball and turned 29 during the 2022 season. He had one season of eligibility remaining, which led to an interesting few days. Aune got married and had a daughter late in his college career. It seemed unlikely he would return for another year on the college level, especially after he said before the season that he was ready to wrap up his time in college. - Denton Record

2022 ALL-CONFERENCE USA FIRST TEAM: DB: Ridge Texada, North Texas,...Texada was called upon early in the year after John Davis, Jr., suffered a season-ending injury in the team's season-opening win at UTEP. The undersized cornerback didn't take long to seize the job and leave his mark. Through 13 games, Texada has 40 tackles, two tackles for-loss, a team-high three interceptions, and a team leading 15 pass breakups. Two more passes defended (interceptions + pass breakups) would give him the program record for a season, previously set by Kemon Hall in 2018 with 19. His three interceptions are the most for a UNT player since 2018. He enters the Frisco Bowl tied for fourth in FBS in total passes defended this season. - North Texas Football

2022 ALL-CONFERENCE USA FIRST TEAM: LB: KD Davis, North Texas,...With one game left in his Mean Green career, Davis has already established himself as one of the most decorated players in program history after becoming the all-time tackles leader in last week's C-USA Championship Game. His 132 tackles is tops on the team by nearly 40 stops and he's the first player in program history to lead the team in tackles for four straight seasons.
