Former Auburn and West Virginia cornerback Dreshun Miller has enrolled an N.C. State. A spokesperson within the N.C. State athletics department confirmed Miller's enrollment to The News & Observer. Miller (6-2, 194) was an all-Big 12 honorable mention in 2020, when he started every game for West Virginia, breaking up nine passes to go along with 31 tackles. Last season, Miller appeared in just one game for Auburn.

Before enrolling at West Virginia, Miller played two seasons at Eastern Arizona College, where he led the Gila Monsters to the juco national championship game. The Atlanta, Georgia native has one season of eligibility remaining. The Wolfpack returns 10 starters on defense, including cornerbacks Shyheim Battle and Derrick Pitts. - Raleigh News Observer

For about five months, N.C. State offensive guard Chandler Zavala was at the mercy of the NCAA. Having suffered season-ending injuries in two seasons, and losing another to the COVID-19 pandemic, Zavala was seeking a sixth year of eligibility. Initially, the NCAA denied his request, effectively ending his collegiate career. In early May, the NCAA reversed course. Now, he enters the 2022 season looking to help fill a void on the offensive line and grateful for the support he received from N.C. State during his off-field battle with the NCAA.

After transferring to N.C. State from Division II Fairmont State, Zavala (6-5, 325) started the first five games of the 2021 season for the Wolfpack. In those five games, the Pack averaged 172 rushing yards - twice rushing for more than 200 yards, including 293 yards rushing in the team's opener against South Florida. Zavala's season was cut short due to injury - for the second time in his collegiate career - when he suffered a back injury on Oct. 2 during N.C. State's game against Louisiana Tech. He had surgery in November, and thought he would be granted an additional year of eligibility for the time he missed. - Raleigh News Observer

Tim McKay wants to change Raleigh as badly as he wants to pancake defensive linemen. The N.C. State offensive tackle, who graduated from Wakefield High, already has his sights set on a post-football career he hopes will keep him in his hometown long after he's done playing for the Wolfpack. "I want to invest in a local startup right here in the Triangle," said McKay, who was 16 years old when he enrolled at N.C. State in January of 2019, "and really help them grow and get off the ground and then expand to other states." McKay earned his business degree from N.C. State in May.

He wants to continue playing football, both at N.C. State and then professionally, but whenever his he hangs up the helmet and shoulder pads, he wants to help Raleigh grow. Inspired by a recent trip to Charlotte, McKay said he'd like to explore adding infrastructure - specifically light rail - to the state capital. McKay, a redshirt sophomore, has dedicated a lot of time to studying the setup of major cities across the United States. "I know it can't be like San Francisco or Miami," McKay said. "But I can definitely take key points from Miami, what they're doing with bitcoin and Crypto currency, and San Francisco, they're heavy in their investing, in New York with their real estate, and try to bring it here to Raleigh." - Raleigh News Observer

Former Ohio State Buckeyes defensive lineman Noah Potter committed Monday via Twitter to play for the Cincinnati Bearcats. Potter announced in late April that he was entering the transfer portal after three seasons at OSU. Potter, a former four-star prospect at Mentor High School ranked the No. 6 player in Ohio by 247Sports, did not play during the 2021 season because of a foot injury in addition to emergency eye surgery to repair a torn retina. He played four games during the 2020 season, making two tackles. Despite the health scare, Potter had bounced back by March and gone through spring practice. His listed size at 6-foot-6 and 275 pounds gave him a chance to seize a large role, allowing him to line up at either defensive end or tackle. - Cincinnati Enquirer

Chambers (5-10, 180), who appeared in 10 games for the Buccaneers in 2021, passing for 2,510 yards, 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, will be a walk-on with the N.C. State football program. The news of his commitment to the Wolfpack was first reported by 247Sports.com.

Last season, Chambers also rushed for more than 400 yards with seven more scores on the ground. He averaged 297.5 yards per game, good enough for 10th in the Football Championship Subdivision. In four years at Charleston Southern, Chambers passed for 5,781 yards and 43 touchdowns. - Raleigh News Observer

The drama surrounding the return of N.C. State lineman Chandler Zavala to the school for a sixth year of football eligibility has reached a conclusion. Zavala posted to social media Thursday night that he is returning to the Wolfpack, meaning the NCAA reversed course on a waiver exemption it had originally denied. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to comeback and represent the wolfpack for another year. Let's run it back!! Thank you all for the endless support," Zavala wrote in a tweet.

"So thankful for Chandler getting the opportunity to finish his career this fall!" N.C. State head coach Dave Doeren said in an official statement released later Thursday night. "It's been a long process for him and he is such an incredible young man. I am super appreciative to our compliance office, Boo Corrigan, and Chandler's attorney for supporting and fighting for him. I can't wait to see #64 back on the grass with his brothers and coaches!" Doeren was more to the point in a post on his Twitter account: "So Happy for Chandler and thankful he gets to finish his journey with this team and staff!!!" Zavala, his family and the university had said in April they were considering legal action if their final appeal to the NCAA was denied. - Raleigh News Observer

His blunt assessment revealed plenty about the transition. Virginia wrapped up spring drills Saturday with its Blue-White Game and before Cavaliers senior quarterback Brennan Armstrong departed Scott Stadium, he answered a question regarding the togetherness of the Hoos' veteran nucleus in the aftermath of new coach Tony Elliott's first spring. Armstrong said UVa's core is much tighter, and his response left no doubt about how those older, experienced players have embraced the fresh direction Elliott has for the program. "There's a lot of things new," Armstrong said, "but I tell them it has to be new. 'What we did last year was 6-6, guys,' and we're all trying to buy into that." Elliott said Armstrong has believed in him and his staff since they arrived.

The quarterback made frequent visits to the McCue Center for film study in an effort to learn Elliott and new offensive coordinator Des Kitchings' system prior to the start of spring practices. The left-handed signal-caller furthered his quest to accelerate the process, according to his coach, throughout those sessions, too. "I'm proud of Brennan," Elliott said. "He made a decision to come back and then some of his buddies decided not to come back, but he still stuck with it. He had to do the best that he could, and I saw him just lead and grow as a leader." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Grayson McCall threw four touchdown passes and Coastal Carolina held off Northern Illinois 47-41 in the Cure Bowl on Friday night, with the game ending with the Huskies at the Chanticleers 4. McCall was 22 for 30 for 315 yards, and Braydon Bennett ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns on six carries to help Coastal Carolina (11-1) win 11 games for the second consecutive year. Bennett also caught four passes for 47 yards and a TD. "He just operates, he's a smooth operator," Coastal Carolina coach Jamey Chadwell said about McCall. "As a coach, if he misses a play, you're like, "What in the world is wrong with him" because he makes so many good one's." Chadwell said while there is speculation about McCall's future, "we're confident that he loves Coastal and he's going to be here with us and finish out his career." It was also Coastal Carolina's first bowl victory. The Chanticleers lost in their first bowl appearance last year, 37-34 in overtime to Liberty.

"Pretty cool," McCall said. "Definitely a team effort. I don't think I played by best game but but all my teammates propelled me forward." Jay Ducker ran for 146 yards on 24 carries, and Antario Brown added 105 yards and 12 attempts for Northern Illinois (9-5). Rocky Lombardi completed 20 of 33 passes for 181 yards and two scores. "Couldn't be more proud of their fight," NIU coach Thomas Hammock said. "This could be a launching pad for us into the 2022 season." NIU's roster has just seven seniors, and includes 71 players who graduated from high school in 2020 or 2021. The Huskies are the first team in FBS history to win its conference championship game one season after going winless (0-6). Lombardi also had picked up 66 yards including a touchdown on eight carries. - Coastal Carolina/AP College Football

Coastal Carolina star quarterback Grayson McCall said Wednesday he is committed to playing college football next year. But will that be at CCU? McCall intimated following a team practice for the Tailgreeter Cure Bowl that he has considered a transfer from CCU. The Chants' season will end with Friday night's bowl game against Northern Illinois at Exploria Stadium in Orlando. When asked if he had put any thought into leaving college after being at CCU for three years, or if he had put any thought into transferring, McCall said: "Obviously, it's been a thought in the back of my mind. But up to this point, I'm focused on winning this bowl game. I'll be back. I'll be playing college football again next year. So there's a lot to think about, but I'll obviously focus on this last objective for the guys, the seniors." Coastal head coach Jamey Chadwell said Wednesday afternoon that he has discussed the possibility of McCall transferring with the QB he recruited out of Porter Ridge High School in Indian Trail, N.C., and inserted as the starter in last year's season opener at Kansas. - Myrtle Beach Online

2021 ALL-SUN BELT FIRST TEAM (COACHES): QB - Grayson McCall, Coastal Carolina (RS So., QB - Indian Trail, N.C.),...McCall, who was the 2020 Sun Belt Player and Freshman of the Year, was once again named to the All-Sun Belt first team this season, as the redshirt sophomore quarterback was 9-1 on the season as a starter while missing two games due to an upper-body injury. A Davey O'Brien and Maxwell Award semifinalist, as well as a two-time Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week honoree, McCall leads all of NCAA FBS in passing efficiency (207.9) which would shatter the NCAA single-season record of 203.1 set by Mac Jones of Alabama last season.

Despite missing two games and playing only the first half in two other games due to blowout wins, McCall's numbers in quality statistics are outstanding. He leads the Sun Belt in completion percentage (73.0), passing efficiency (207.9), passing touchdowns (23), passing yards per game (255.8), passing yards per completion (16.61), points responsible for (168), points responsible per game (16.8), total offense per game (280.8), and yards per pass attempt (12.12).   Quarterback Brennan Armstrong, awaiting a grade from the NFL's draft advisory board, has no plans to transfer from Virginia. Armstrong, who attended new UVA football coach Tony Ellliott's introductory press conference Monday, said he'll either turn pro or return to the Cavaliers. "I don't think I'm ever transferring," said Armstrong. "I'm not going to transfer. It's either here or the NFL. Me and Coach Elliott will sit down and talk about a bunch of stuff and figure things out, and then make my decision off that." This season, his second as UVA's starting quarterback, Armstrong has set school records for passing yards (4,449), total offensive yards (4,700) and touchdown passes (31). He led the Cavaliers to a 6-2 start before suffering a rib injury during a road loss to BYU on Oct. 30. - Charlottesville Daily Progress
