Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall will miss three to six weeks with a foot injury sustained a week ago in a win over Appalachian State. The school announced McCall's status Wednesday. The injury's recovery timeline means that McCall's availability for a potential Sun Belt Conference championship game on Dec. 3 is in question. A school spokesman said in a text to The AP that McCall will not need surgery. The Chanticleers (8-1, 5-1) have a one-game lead in the East Division over first-year league member James Madison.

Coastal Carolina would also be in line to host the game as the division winner with the best overall record. McCall will be out for Coastal's home game with Southern Miss on Saturday. The team plays at Virginia of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Nov. 19 before closing the regular season at James Madison. McCall is a two-time Sun Belt player of the year and is fifth in the country in passing efficiency (176.10). He set an NCAA mark in that category last season (207.65) McCall, a 6-foot-3, fourth-year junior from Indian Trail, North Carolina, has started the past three seasons, throwing for 7,700 yards with 75 touchdowns and seven interceptions over 33 games, 31 of them starts. - AP College Football

Grayson McCall threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns and Coastal Carolina beat Appalachian State 35-28 on Thursday night for first place in the Sun Belt Conference. McCall's 8-yard TD pass to Jacob Jenkins made it 28-14 early in the fourth quarter, and on App State's next play Tavyn Jackson intercepted a pass and returned it 54 yards to the 1. Reese White capped the drive with a TD run for a 21-point lead. Chase Brice's 5-yard quarterback sneak with 3:01 left in the fourth cut App State's deficit to seven points, but Coastal Carolina ran out the clock in eight plays to end it.

Coastal Carolina (8-1, 5-1) won just its second game in eight series meetings. The winner of this matchup has gone on to win the East Division the last four years. The Coastal Carolina defense forced a three-and-out on the first possession of the game, and three plays later Jared Brown ran for a 45-yard touchdown. Coastal Carolina had three touchdowns of over 30 yards in the first half to build a 21-14 lead. McCall connected with Sam Pinckney for a 38-yard touchdown on a flea-flicker.   Brennan Armstrong helped Virginia overcome a difficult start in the first quarter to account for 349 yards of total offense and help the Cavaliers snap a three-game skid with a 16-9 victory over Georgia Tech on Thursday night. In a matchup of the two lowest-scoring teams in the ACC, Virginia (3-4, 1-3) avoided an 0-4 start in conference play for the first time since 2014. The Cavaliers stopped a five-game losing streak on the road. Georgia Tech (3-4, 2-2) had won two straight for the first time since it had a four-game streak four years ago and was trying to move above .500 at the latest point in a season since 2018. Though Virginia's offense hardly looked spectacular, Armstrong did enough to keep the team moving while the defense stalled Georgia Tech throughout the second half. Nick Jackson and Chico Bennett Jr., a transfer from Georgia Tech, led the way with a combined eight solo stops and had four of the team's eight sacks. Jackson had a big sack on the Georgia Tech's next-to-last possession to force a fourth down and drop the Jackets back to the 48 with 1:52 remaining.

Fentrell Cypress II broke up a fourth-down pass in Virginia territory. Armstrong was 20 of 35 passing for 255 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He ran 13 times for 94 yards and a score. With quarterback Jeff Sims starting the game for Georgia Tech but sidelined in the second quarter because of an apparent left knee injury, Zach Gibson took over and led the offense to the Virginia 1. The Jackets couldn't get any farther, and Gavin Stewart kicked a 35-yard field goal that cut the lead to 13-9 at halftime. Gibson lost a fumble at the Georgia Tech 5 in the third quarter, but the Yellow Jackets' defense held when Lavel Davis dropped a touchdown pass in the left corner of the end zone, and the Cavaliers settled for a 28-yard field by Will Bettridge that padded the lead to 16-9. Dontayvion Wicks caught a 44-yard TD pass, weaving through several defenders down the left sideline to put the Cavaliers up 13-6 midway through the second when Bettridge missed the extra point. Armstrong broke Matt Schaub's school record with his 57th career TD pass. - Virginia/AP College Football

Grayson McCall threw two long scoring strikes to freshman Jared Brown and ran for a score - all in the first quarter - and Coastal Carolina breezed to a 41-24 victory over Georgia State on Thursday night. McCall hit Brown for a 50-yard score on the first play from scrimmage and the pair hooked up again for a 53-yarder as Coastal Carolina (4-0) jumped out to a 14-0 lead just 2:53 into the Sun Belt Conference opener. Tucker Gregg scored on a 4-yard run to get Georgia State (0-4) within seven, but McCall capped a 10-play 75-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run and the Chanticleers led 21-7 after one quarter. The Panthers never got closer than 10 points from there.

McCall completed 19 of 27 passes for 248 yards. He set a school record with touchdown passes in 17 straight games. Brown finished with five catches for 129 yards. Gregg's TD run was the 19th of his career, tying the Panthers' record. Jontrey Hunter picked off a pass from Chanticleers' backup Jarrett Guest and returned it 77 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Guest had a 5-yard TD run later in the period. The Chanticleers and Panthers have split the six games they've played. Neither team has a home win in the series. Coastal Carolina has won seven straight dating back to last year and has started 4-0 for a third straight season. Georgia State was held to 78 yards rushing on 33 attempts. The Panthers came in averaging 231.3 yards on the ground. - Coastal Carolina/AP College Football

Aydan White returned one of his two interceptions 84 yards for a touchdown to lead a strong defensive effort that carried No. 16 North Carolina State past Texas Tech, 27-14 on Saturday night. Facing the Bowl Subdivision's top passing offense, N.C. State's veteran defense harassed quarterback Donovan Smith and shut down any ground game the Red Raiders tried to muster. The highlight was White's fourth-down pick of Smith's overthrown second-quarter ball, with White taking the interception down the left side with three teammates sprinting to escort him all the way to the end zone. "That's a DB's dream," White said, "to see that much green." White also had a sack on a cornerback blitz, one of four for the Wolfpack (3-0). Jakeen Harris came up with a fourth-down interception near midfield with 8:38 left as Texas Tech (2-1) tried to make a late push.

The defensive effort offset a shaky day by the Wolfpack's offense, which had its own troubles with stalled drives and score-negating mistakes. Demie Sumo-Karngbaye - who lost a sure TD catch when he was stripped near the goal line and fumbled out of the end zone - scored twice, the second on a 38-yard catch off a trick-play pass from Thayer Thomas for a 27-7 lead early in the fourth. Smith ran and threw for scores to lead the Red Raiders, as his 3-yard keeper cut the deficit to 27-14. But after Texas Tech forced a three-and-out to get the ball back, Smith fired incomplete on three straight passes before Harris picked him off over the middle to keep the Wolfpack in control. "We're going to face some good defenses in the Big 12," first-year Red Raiders coach Joey McGuire said. "I think we have to be better in catching all catchable balls, getting vertical when you catch it. We've got to put ourselves in good situations. ... But there's some stuff that we've got to do as a staff to put these guys in better situations." - NC State/AP College Football
