Liberty is hiring Coastal Carolina's Jamey Chadwell to replace Hugh Freeze as the Flames' head coach. A person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Sunday that a deal was done but spoke on condition of anonymity because an official announcement from Liberty was still in the works. Freeze left Liberty after four years to accept the same position at Auburn. Chadwell has guided the Chanticleers to new heights over the past three seasons, leading them to a 31-6 record and consecutive bowl games.

The Chants appeared at No. 23 in the AP Top 25 but lost 47-7 at James Madison in their regular-season finale with starting quarterback and Sun Belt player of the year Grayson McCall sidelined. They were beat again Saturday, 45-26, by Troy in the Sun Belt Conference championship game. Chadwell also has guided programs at North Greenville, Delta State and Charleston Southern and has a career mark of 99-57 as a head coach. - AP College Football

Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong entered the transfer portal on Thursday, The Daily Progress confirmed. The Athletic and On3 first reported the news. Armstrong qualifies as a graduate transfer, and grad transfers do not have to wait for the newly implemented transfer window to enter the portal. The first window opens on Monday and runs through Jan. 18. A second window is slated for the spring, but grad transfers can put their name in at any time.

Armstrong is UVa's all-time leader for passing yards, total offense, passing touchdowns, 200-yard passing games and 300-yard passing games. He holds the Cavaliers' single-season records for passing yards, total offense and passing touchdowns, too, which were all set in 2021 when he thrived in the air raid system the Hoos used under former offensive coordinator Robert Anae and ex-quarterbacks coach Jason Beck. The left-handed signal-caller tallied 4,449 passing yards in 2021 to go along with 31 touchdown passes. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Although action doesn't officially start until Monday, among the reported quarterbacks in, or planning to be to enter the transfer portal as of Dec. 1 Is Virginia's Brennan Armstrong: He had a huge 2021 season, throwing for 4,449 yards and 31 TDs; he also ran for nine touchdowns. But a coaching change led to a philosophy change, and his stats fell off the table this season. He threw for less than half of what he did in '21 (2,210, with just seven TDs), and while he led the team in rush attempts, he managed just 371 yards and six TDs. In a system that favors the pass but likes its quarterback to be a running threat, Armstrong – who has one season of eligibility remaining – can put up big numbers again. - NFL Draft Scout and online sources

Pittsburgh led Virginia 14-0 just 16 seconds into their game after Brennan Armstrong's first two passes were intercepted and returned for touchdowns. M.J. Devonshire's pick-6 went for 29 yards and Marquis Williams' for 39. It was each player's second interception return for TDs this season. The game was Pitt's first with two interception returns for TDs since Sept. 2, 2006, when Darrelle Revis and Clint Session had pick-6s against Virginia. It was a tough day for Armstrong. He was sacked eight times and finished 17 of 33 for 152 yards and a touchdown. Only two FBS quarterbacks have thrown more than Armstrong's 12 interceptions this season. - AP College Football

Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall will miss three to six weeks with a foot injury sustained a week ago in a win over Appalachian State. The school announced McCall's status Wednesday. The injury's recovery timeline means that McCall's availability for a potential Sun Belt Conference championship game on Dec. 3 is in question. A school spokesman said in a text to The AP that McCall will not need surgery. The Chanticleers (8-1, 5-1) have a one-game lead in the East Division over first-year league member James Madison.

Coastal Carolina would also be in line to host the game as the division winner with the best overall record. McCall will be out for Coastal's home game with Southern Miss on Saturday. The team plays at Virginia of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Nov. 19 before closing the regular season at James Madison. McCall is a two-time Sun Belt player of the year and is fifth in the country in passing efficiency (176.10). He set an NCAA mark in that category last season (207.65) McCall, a 6-foot-3, fourth-year junior from Indian Trail, North Carolina, has started the past three seasons, throwing for 7,700 yards with 75 touchdowns and seven interceptions over 33 games, 31 of them starts. - AP College Football

Grayson McCall threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns and Coastal Carolina beat Appalachian State 35-28 on Thursday night for first place in the Sun Belt Conference. McCall's 8-yard TD pass to Jacob Jenkins made it 28-14 early in the fourth quarter, and on App State's next play Tavyn Jackson intercepted a pass and returned it 54 yards to the 1. Reese White capped the drive with a TD run for a 21-point lead. Chase Brice's 5-yard quarterback sneak with 3:01 left in the fourth cut App State's deficit to seven points, but Coastal Carolina ran out the clock in eight plays to end it.

Coastal Carolina (8-1, 5-1) won just its second game in eight series meetings. The winner of this matchup has gone on to win the East Division the last four years. The Coastal Carolina defense forced a three-and-out on the first possession of the game, and three plays later Jared Brown ran for a 45-yard touchdown. Coastal Carolina had three touchdowns of over 30 yards in the first half to build a 21-14 lead. McCall connected with Sam Pinckney for a 38-yard touchdown on a flea-flicker. Brice threw for 279 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for Appalachian State (5-4, 2-3). Dalton Stroman made a one-handed catch in the end zone for a 41-yard score to get within 21-14. - Coastal Carolina/AP College Football

Grayson McCall had a touchdown run and a scoring pass as Coastal Carolina did most of its damage in the first quarter in a 24-13 victory over Marshall on Saturday night. McCall opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run for Coastal Carolina (7-1, 4-1 Sun Belt Conference). Bryce Carpenter scored on a 3-yard run and McCall fired a 37-yard scoring strike to Jacob Jenkins to give the Chanticleers a 21-0 lead after one quarter.   Brennan Armstrong helped Virginia overcome a difficult start in the first quarter to account for 349 yards of total offense and help the Cavaliers snap a three-game skid with a 16-9 victory over Georgia Tech on Thursday night. In a matchup of the two lowest-scoring teams in the ACC, Virginia (3-4, 1-3) avoided an 0-4 start in conference play for the first time since 2014. The Cavaliers stopped a five-game losing streak on the road. Georgia Tech (3-4, 2-2) had won two straight for the first time since it had a four-game streak four years ago and was trying to move above .500 at the latest point in a season since 2018. Though Virginia's offense hardly looked spectacular, Armstrong did enough to keep the team moving while the defense stalled Georgia Tech throughout the second half. Nick Jackson and Chico Bennett Jr., a transfer from Georgia Tech, led the way with a combined eight solo stops and had four of the team's eight sacks. Jackson had a big sack on the Georgia Tech's next-to-last possession to force a fourth down and drop the Jackets back to the 48 with 1:52 remaining.

Fentrell Cypress II broke up a fourth-down pass in Virginia territory. Armstrong was 20 of 35 passing for 255 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He ran 13 times for 94 yards and a score. With quarterback Jeff Sims starting the game for Georgia Tech but sidelined in the second quarter because of an apparent left knee injury, Zach Gibson took over and led the offense to the Virginia 1. The Jackets couldn't get any farther, and Gavin Stewart kicked a 35-yard field goal that cut the lead to 13-9 at halftime. Gibson lost a fumble at the Georgia Tech 5 in the third quarter, but the Yellow Jackets' defense held when Lavel Davis dropped a touchdown pass in the left corner of the end zone, and the Cavaliers settled for a 28-yard field by Will Bettridge that padded the lead to 16-9. Dontayvion Wicks caught a 44-yard TD pass, weaving through several defenders down the left sideline to put the Cavaliers up 13-6 midway through the second when Bettridge missed the extra point. Armstrong broke Matt Schaub's school record with his 57th career TD pass. - Virginia/AP College Football
