Brennan Armstrong and Lavel Davis Jr. teamed up on a pair of early fourth-quarter touchdown passes and Virginia rallied past Duke, 38-20, on Saturday night. Armstrong hit Davis, a freshman, on an 18-yard fade route in the left corner of the end zone to give the Cavaliers (1-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) a 24-20 lead. After Joey Blount's interception, he hit him for 26 yards, with Davis pulling away from two Duke defenders about eight yards from the end zone and powering his way in. The Blue Devils (0-3, 0-3), whose games have all come in the season debut of their opponent, turned the ball over seven times after hurting their cause with five turnovers last week in a loss to Boston College.

Their start is their worst since the 2010 team lost its first six games. Wayne Taulapapa ran for a pair of touchdown for the Cavaliers, including a 10-yard burst with about 5 minutes left that put the game away. It came after Duke backup quarterback Gunnar Holmberg fumbled the ball on a fourth-and-1 play from the Blue Devils' 29. Armstrong finished 24 for 45 for 269 yards in his first career start with two interceptions. Taulapapa gained 95 yards, a career-high, on 16 carries. The Cavaliers have now won six straight in the series. - AP College Football

Grayson McCall threw for 273 yards and two touchdowns in his second career start and Coastal Carolina beat Campbell 43-21 on Friday night. C.J. Marable and Shermari Jones each had short touchdown runs in the first quarter and Jaivon Heiligh added a 21-yard touchdown grab in the second to give CCU a 21-3 lead. Reese White made it 28-9 in the third with another short TD run. Marable finished with 53 yards and two touchdowns for Coastal Carolina (2-0), which beat Kansas 38-23 last week. Marable entered needing 83 yards to reach 3,000 career rushing yards. The Chanticleers aren't scheduled to play again until Oct. 3. C.J. Freeman ran for 81 yards and one touchdown for Campbell (0-2), which has a four-game schedule before the Big South Conference plans to start in the spring. Brooks Stadium, which holds 20,000, had a limited capacity of fans due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Chanticleers are 14-4 in home openers, including a 30-23 loss to Eastern Michigan last season. - AP College Football

Moore will look a little different on Saturday. The junior from Chester, Va. was named a team captain earlier this week. It was also announced that Moore will wear jersey No. 1. Since 2014, head coach Dave Doeren has issued the jersey to a team member for their work ethic, character, leadership and accomplishments. "He is a great person, player and teammate," Doeren said about Moore. "He has overcome many obstacles and continues to shine in the face of adversity as a leader who brings stretch to the Pack." Moore has been a leader on and off the field this summer for the Wolfpack. It's not just a jersey number, but also like a badge of honor that Moore will take very seriously this season. "It definitely means a lot," Moore said. "I know the meaning behind the number and those who have worn it before me, so it's my obligation to wear it the right way and wear it proudly." - Raleigh News Observer

Redshirt freshman quarterback Grayson McCall was impressive in his first collegiate start at Kansas on Saturday, and he'll have more opportunities to impress as the season progresses. McCall beat out experienced juniors Fred Payton and Bryce Carpenter to earn the season-opening start and lead the Chanticleers to a 38-23 win over the Jayhawks. CCU coach Jamey Chadwell said the job is now his to lose. "We compete all the time, but it's his job," Chadwell said. "He earned that job and we're going to ride with him through the ups and downs of a freshman quarterback." As a redshirt freshman, Chadwell is not making McCall available to the media for now. But McCall spoke to CCU's sports information department following Saturday's win. "It's a really good start to the season," he said. "A lot of sacrifices up to this point for us to even just be able to play this game, so I'm really proud of the team and we're going to build on it and keep going."

McCall completed 11 of 18 passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns, and added 73 yards and two scores on 11 carries. He completed passes to six different players and led the offense to 318 yards and no turnovers. "It's one game, so I wouldn't say he's special right now," Chadwell said. "He played one game and did well. He could go out and lay an egg and you'll ask me why I'm playing him Friday. But he does have a great knack in the pocket, he's a tough kid, and the moment does not seem too big for him...He's got a pretty level head when he's out there on the field, and I do think that's got a chance to help him become hopefully a special player for us." - Myrtle Beach Online

For the past two seasons as Virginia's backup quarterback, Brennan Armstrong's routine on game days consisted mostly of watching Bryce Perkins confound defenses. Armstrong would be certain to pay attention, though, to how the Cavaliers' dynamic dual-threat starter commanded the huddle, earning supreme respect and confidence from teammates and coaches. He especially admired Perkins's poise in the pocket when chaos unfolded around him. Those qualities and then some came via meticulous preparation, Armstrong observed, over countless hours of quarterback meetings and film study, allowing Perkins to be ready for virtually any contingency. "The one thing I picked up with Bryce was he did not let a lot of time go to waste," Armstrong said. "When we have school, we have school, but when we didn't, it was trying to get with the receivers and dial in a few things. Obviously we're different styles of leadership, but he didn't waste time. "That's one thing I try to carry over with my leadership style." - Baltimore Sun

Coastal Carolina now has two wins over a Big 12 opponent in 12-plus months, and may have found its starting quarterback for the remainder of the season. Chanticleers coach Jamey Chadwell started Grayson McCall at quarterback in a surprise move in the season opener Saturday night, and the redshirt freshman led Coastal to its second win over Kansas in consecutive years. McCall accounted for more than 200 yards of offense and all five CCU touchdowns and led Coastal to a 28-0 lead en route to a 38-23 win over the Jayhawks at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Kansas. "We wanted to get off to a fast start and we did defensively and we did offensively," Chadwell told WRNN 99.5 FM. "In the first half we really played almost a flawless game." Coastal's 12-7 win at Kansas last year was the program's first over an opponent from a Power Five conference. "Last year you could have said it was a fluke. There's no way you can say that this year," Chadwell said. McCall completed 11 of 18 passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns, and added 73 yards and two scores on 11 carries. "I thought he played really well," Chadwell said. "I think he hit a little rut there in the second half. I think he felt a little pressure there because they were making a comeback...Zero turnovers, he ran our offense, helped us control the clock. I thought he did a really nice job for us. "I'm very proud of him and his performance." - Myrtle Beach Online

Coastal Carolina might want to start scheduling a trip to Kansas every season. Grayson McCall threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more scores, the Chanticleers forced the Jayhawks into three early turnovers, and the coach Jamey Chadwell's bunch rolled to a 38-23 victory early Sunday. It was the second consecutive years that the young Football Bowl Subdivision program had won in Memorial Stadium. "Great win for our program," Chadwell said. "Just proud of the effort." He was proud of the Sun Belt, too. Louisiana bludgeoned No. 23 Iowa State and Arkansas State rallied to beat Kansas State earlier Saturday.

By the time Coastal Carolina wrapped things up about 1 a.m. local time, its lightly regarded league was 3-0 against the mighty Big 12 with all the wins coming on the road. "We didn't want to let the Sun Belt down," Chadwell said. "Hopefully people back on the East Coast were awake to see it." There were no fans on hand for the Jayhawks' opener because of the coronavirus pandemic. Then again, considering they trailed 28-3 at halftime, there probably wouldn't have been many left under normal circumstances - and combined with the 9 p.m. kickoff due to television, it meant few people probably saw it. - AP College/Coastal Carolina Football

Knight should be able to build off his impressive rookie season and be the No. 1 guy. He averaged 5.5 yards per carry and was the sixth-leading rusher in the nation among true freshmen. He only had three 100-yard games in 2019, but his season high (139) came against Clemson. Knight also proved to be a home-run hitter, scoring on a 53-yard run against the Tigers, the second longest play from scrimmage for the season for N.C. State. - Raleigh News Observer

Junior defensive end Ibrahim Kante (6-4, 256) started six games a year ago and had 15 tackles. He should be joined up front by junior defensive tackle Alim McNeill (6-2, 315) and a battle between transfer Daniel Joseph (6-3, 260) and sophomore Savion Jackson (6-3, 265). Expectations are high for McNeill, a Raleigh native who started seven games a year ago and finished with 28 tackles and 5.5 sacks. Joseph played in 24 contests at Penn State before transferring to N.C. State for his final season. - Raleigh News Observer

Marshall players were asked Monday to name a player that they couldn't wait to see in a game scenario this week. As it turned out, the answers were the same whether asking offensive or defensive players. That player? Strong safety Derrek Pitts, who is listed on the depth chart as a starter for the Thundering Herd's opener Saturday against Eastern Kentucky. As teammates pointed out, Pitts is listed as a starter for good reason. "He's just been flying around, he's been aggressive - a ballhawk," Marshall senior defensive back Nazeeh Johnson said. "I want to see him come down here and make some plays."

Johnson has the benefit of being in the same position room as Pitts, which means they get to break down film of opponents and themselves each day. However, the truest compliments come from those on the offensive side of the ball, who say the 6-foot, 187-pound Dunbar native is an absolutely nightmare to face in practice. "He's able to cover the field so well," Marshall running back Brenden Knox said. "He's shown that through camp and stuff - his ability to cover from sideline to sideline and cover a lot of ground. That's really difficult to do in the position he's at. I feel like he's excelled at that and shown it consistently over practice." - Charleston Gazette

When Bryce Perkins graduated, Brennan Armstrong assumed the role of the Virginia football team's No. 1 quarterback. When Bronco Mendenhall brought in Mississippi State transfer Keytaon Thompson over the offseason, the No. 1 spot became a toss-up. While the starting quarterback for the 2020 fall season is still to be determined, Armstrong holds the edge through the first two weeks of camp. "Right now the slight nod would go to Brennan Armstrong if I was choosing today," Mendenhall said Friday, "but we're four weeks out."

Armstrong holds an advantage in understanding the offense, having spent years learning Robert Anae's offensive system. The left-handed quarterback draws praise from teammates for elite spatial awareness and feel. While Armstrong isn't Perkins, he moves well in and out of the pocket. He can tuck the football and run, keeping quarterbacks runs within the offensive design should he earn the starting nod come September. Players like Armstrong, who is becoming more vocal as a leader, and he's a reliable and promising option at the position. - Charlottesville Daily Progress
