Unbeaten Coastal Carolina is ranked for the first time in the program's short history. The Chanticleers from Conway, South Carolina, joined the FBS in 2017. They beat Sun Belt rival Louisiana-Lafayette last Wednesday to improve to 4-0. The loss knocked the Ragin' Cajuns out of the Top 25, but it still has been a banner year for the Sun Belt. The conference has had three of its teams ranked at one point or another. Never before had more than one Sun Belt team been ranked in any season. - AP College Football

Cary Angeline and Thayer Thomas had second-half touchdown catches to help North Carolina State beat Duke 31-20 on Saturday despite losing starting quarterback Devin Leary to injury. Angeline's 4-yard scoring catch put the Wolfpack up for good late in the third quarter. Then Thomas added a highlight-reel grab early in the fourth, somehow snagging a 9-yard pass with his right hand and pinning the ball to his helmet while being knocked out of the end zone. N.C. State (4-1, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) got another strong performance from its defense, which surrendered one offensive touchdown while coming up with a goal-line stand for the third straight week. This time, N.C. State regrouped after a bumpy first half that included deficits of 10-0 and 17-7, as well as eight penalties for 106 yards. The Wolfpack cleaned up those mistakes to go ahead in the third, though that's when Leary was carted off with an injury to his lower left leg. - North Carolina State/AP College Football

Starting quarterback Brennan Armstrong is day-to-day for the Cavaliers after suffering a concussion Saturday against N.C. State. There's a chance he plays Saturday, but it's no guarantee. Should he miss the game, Lindell Stone will receive the starting nod. Stone completed 30 of his 54 passes Saturday in relief of Armstrong, throwing for 240 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Mississippi State transfer Keytaon Thompson is expected to remain at wide receiver for the time being. "Very, very early on, he had a shoulder injury that was aggravated," Mendenhall said of Thompson's fall camp performance. "That really precluded him from being able to play that position effectively at that time." The Cavaliers want Thompson, who is an exceptional athlete, on the field, so he made the move to wide receiver while dealing with shoulder pain. It appears he'll remain there with Stone acting as the primary backup for the Wahoos should Armstrong miss time. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Former Marvin Ridge High star Emeka Emezie had one of the biggest catches of his career Saturday, which helped N.C. State rally to beat nationally ranked Pittsburgh on Saturday. Emezie, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound senior, caught a touchdown pass from Devin Leary with 25 seconds left in the Wolfpack's 30-29 win over No. 24 Pitt. It was Leary's fourth touchdown pass of the day and came after the Wolfpack converted a fourth-and-9 earlier in the drive, which covered 79 yards on eight plays in just 81 seconds. Emekie's catch - and Leary's back-shoulder throw - helped N.C. State bounce back from an embarrassing 45-24 loss at Virginia Tech last week. Emezie, whose parents are from Nigeria, finished with seven catches for 101 yards and two touchdowns. - Raleigh News Observer

McCall earned the honor for the first time this season on Sept. 14 following the season-opening win over Kansas (Sept. 12). Named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week earlier on Monday, the redshirt-freshman quarterback connected on 20-of-29 pass attempts for 322 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception in the Chants' 52-23 win over Arkansas State on Oct. 3. The 20 completions, four touchdown passes, and 322 passing yards were all career-highs for the young Chant quarterback who was making just the third start of his career.   Despite starting the game 1-for-8, Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong developed into a rhythm. He finished the game completing 24 of his 43 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns. He also tossed a pair of interceptions. On the ground, Armstrong ran hard. The quarterback carried the ball 22 times for 89 yards, showing a willingness to rush the ball to pick up first downs for the Wahoos. "I knew coming into the game, just don't be afraid to tuck and run it," Armstrong said. "I was ready mindset wise to go do that."

In just his second collegiate start, Armstrong went into Death Valley and helped guide an offensive attack to more than 400 yards. Since the start of last season, the only other quarterbacks to help an offense surpass 400 total yards against Clemson are Justin Fields of Ohio State and 2020 NFL Draft No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow, who played collegiately at LSU. "He did amazing," Mendenhall said. "Brennan is tough mentally and physically. The stage wasn't too big, the team wasn't too good. I was really pleased with his mindset, his execution, his leadership. He did a really nice job." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

The 20 completions, four touchdown passes, and 322 passing yards were all career-highs for the young Chant quarterback who was making the third start of his career. He linked up with six different Chant receivers on the day and also rushed 17 times for 44 yards, the second-most by a Chant in the win. It was their first game since a win over Campbell on Sept. 18.   Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong has only started one game in his college career, but Clemson coach Dabo Swinney has seen enough to compare him to an all-time great. Swinney said Armstrong looked like "a young Steve Young out there" last Saturday in Virginia's 38-20 win over Duke. The sophomore completed 24 of 45 passes for 269 yards against the Blue Devils, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Armstrong also rushed for 47 yards and a score. "He's a challenge. He's a problem. He's a really good player," Swinney said. "He looks like a young Steve Young out there. Lefty, crafty, creative, extends plays, tough runner, really good size, accurate thrower, really has no fear. Puts the ball up and trusts his guys to make competitive plays."

Young, a three-time Super Bowl champion and Pro Football Hall of Famer, was named the NFL MVP in 1992 and 1994. He starred at BYU before beginning his NFL career and is also in the College Football Hall of Fame. Armstrong will obviously have a tough time reaching any of those accolades, but Tigers defensive coordinator Brent Venables echoed Swinney in stating that he was impressive in his first start. "I thought Armstrong really had a lot of poise and managed the game well and played really big when they needed him to," Venables said of the 6-foot-2, 215 pounder. "He's a tough guy to emulate, just his sheer size. He's a big athlete back there that can throw it and run it both, so a tough guy to emulate to say the least." - The State

N.C. State is barely three weeks into the football season and the injury woes that upset its roster last year are starting to emerge. Junior cornerback Teshaun Smith posted on his Instagram account Sunday night that he will miss the remainder of the 2020 season. He will undergo shoulder surgery and return in 2021. The school also confirmed that Smith won't return this season. Smith, who's 6-3 and 186 pounds, was in for 56 plays in the season opener against Wake Forest on Sept. 19. He finished the game with three tackles. Smith, who's from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., has played in 17 games and had five starts for the Wolfpack. He has one career interception and 28 tackles. He was on the sideline but not in uniform this past Saturday during the Wolfpack's 45-24 loss at Virginia Tech. - Raleigh News Observer

The Brennan Armstrong era at Virginia began Saturday. It went how you might expect a redshirt sophomore's first college start to go. Throughout the night, the left-handed quarterback had highs and lows. He completed 24 of his 45 passes for 269 yards. He found freshman wide receiver Lavel Davis Jr. for two touchdowns, but he also tossed two interceptions. On the ground, Armstrong showcased quickness and a willingness to lower his shoulder. He turned 10 carries into 47 yards and a touchdown. Armstrong's debut ended with a victory, and he showcased raw talent, but there's plenty to work on ahead of next week. "He's tough, he's competitive and he's resilient," Mendenhall said. "It was a slow start. Momentum was being generated with every repetition and there's lessons that were being learned the whole step of the way." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

North Carolina State says safety Khalid Martin is being discharged from a Virginia hospital with no "radiographic abnormalities" after being examined for a possible spinal cord injury. The football team tweeted the update Sunday, a day after Martin collided with teammate Tyler Baker-Williams while attempting to tackle a Virginia Tech player in the third quarter of a 45-24 loss. The game was delayed for approximately 15 minutes while the N.C. State sports medicine staff attended to Martin. He was taken from the field in an ambulance to a hospital for what the N.C. State communications staff initially said was a hip injury. The Wolfpack said on Twitter that Martin was heading back to Raleigh on Sunday after being discharged from Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he underwent further examination. - AP College Football
