Brennan Armstrong threw for 383 yards and four touchdowns and Virginia beat Abilene Christian 55-15 on Saturday night. Armstrong completed just 16 passes, but the scoring throws covered 28 yards to Tony Poljan, 90 yards to Lavel Davis Jr., 56 yards to Keytaon Thompson and 52 yards to Ra'Shaun Henry as the Cavaliers made quick work of their Southland Conference foe. The Wildcats (1-5), who have had two games canceled because their scheduled opponents had coronavirus-related issues, were a late addition to Virginia's schedule when other nonconference options fell through, and they were clearly overmatched.

The Cavaliers (4-4) started slowly, but a 33-yard run by Armstrong got their offense untracked, and his 28-yard pass to Poljan got them on the board late in the first quarter. They ended the quarter with Armstrong hitting Davis over the middle, and the 6-foot-7 freshman outran cornerback Christopher Satterfield for the 90-yard score. Shane Simpson scored on a pair of 1-yard runs in the second quarter, the second to cap a 64-yard drive that used the last 30 seconds of the half. It came after the Wildcats drove for their first points of the night on Stone Earle's 2-yard pass to Kobe Clark. Earle was making his first start and just his second appearance. He finished 19 of 31 for 150 yards and also ran 13 times for 20 yards. - Virginia/AP College Football

Reese White scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 3-yard run with 2:24 to play, and No. 15 Coastal Carolina continued its perfect 8-0 start with its first-ever win over Appalachian State, 34-23 on Saturday. The Chants (6-0 Sun Belt Conference) had lost all six previous games to the four-time defending Sun Belt champion Mountaineers. But they held Appalachian State to just two field goals in the second half after falling behind 17-9 at halftime. The Mountaineers ( 6-2, 4-1) tried to rally after White's score. But D'Jordan Strong intercepted Zac Thomas' 4th-and-22 pass and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown to clinch it.

Coastal Carolina, picked last in the Sun Belt in the preseason, is now a victory away from winning the league's East Division and playing West winners Louisiana-Lafayette for the conference title next month. The Chants play at Texas State next week and a make-up of a COVID-19-postponed game at Troy on Dec. 12. In between is a potential undefeated showdown against No. 22 LIberty on Dec. 5. Coastal Carolina freshman quarterback Grayson McCall threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another 69 yards and a score. Wide receiver Isaiah Likely had 118 yards receiving and a score, and the Chants' defense forced three turnovers, all interceptions, off the usually steady Thomas. - Coastal Carolina/AP College Football

Brennan Armstrong ran for two touchdowns and passed for another and Virginia beat Louisville 31-17 on Saturday in a game that was pushed back a week by a COVID-19 outbreak among the Cardinals. Armstrong scored on runs of 8 and 9 yards, the latter with 4:29 remaining to give Virginia (3-4, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) a two-score cushion. He also hit Lavel Davis Jr. with a 9-yard scoring pass that gave the Cavaliers a 21-10 lead in the third quarter.

Quarterback Malik Cunningham gave the Cavaliers fits all day as he ran for a career-high 197 yards for the Cardinals (2-6, 1-6), but his first-quarter interception was returned 85 yards for a touchdown by Noah Taylor and he had the ball ripped out of his hands by Nick Grant at the end of 27-yard run, setting up Armstrong's second rushing score. The Cardinals were without seven players, but did not detail if any of the missing were COVID-related. Cunningham, who ran 20 times, was 13 for 21 throwing the ball for 161 yards. Armstrong, who rushed for 60 yards, finished 15 for 23 for 203 yards with an interception. - AP College Football

Grayson McCall threw for 203 yards and a score, Massimo Biscardi had three field goals and No. 15 Coastal Carolina improved to 7-0 with a 23-6 victory Saturday night over South Alabama. McCall completed 16 of 23 passes including a 9-yard scoring pass to C.J. Marable as the Chanticleers (5-0 Sun Belt Conference) outgained the Jaguars (3-4, 2-2) by more than 100 yards, including 236 yards on the ground, and the defense recorded recorded five sacks. The Chants entered Saturday's game with an 11-6 advantage in turnover margin to rank 21st in the nation, and a nearly 10-minute advantage in time of possession to rank ninth in the country. Coastal held a 17-6 lead at halftime and Biscardi kicked a pair of field goals in the second half for the Chants. Coastal struck first on its first possession, driving 72 yards in seven plays for a 1-yard touchdown run on fourth down by Shermari White. A key play in the drive was a 46-yard run by Reese White. - AP College Football

Vanderbilt starting safety/kick returner Donovan Kaufman will miss the remainder of the season for a medical-related issue, coach Derek Mason said Tuesday. Kaufman, a freshman, was not only one of the team's most dynamic defenders. He also led the SEC in kick return average (27.4 yards). He started the first two games of the season against Texas A&M and LSU but missed the South Carolina and Ole Miss games. Mason said he expects Kaufman to return to the lineup next season. It's another tough blow to a Vanderbilt roster, and particularly the defensive secondary, that has been depleted during a season of injuries, transfers and a COVID-19 outbreak. - Tennessean

In just its fourth year as a Football Bowl Subdivision participant, the Coastal Carolina football team has already made Sun Belt Conference history. The Chanticleers appeared at No. 15 in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll released Sunday, a day after routing conference rival Georgia State 51-0 in Atlanta. The No. 15 ranking is the highest for a Sun Belt team ever, eclipsing No. 19 rankings held by Appalachian State last year and Louisiana twice this season. CCU also set a conference record with its 16th ranking in the Amway Coaches Poll presented by USA Today Sports, besting the Mountaineers' end-of-season 18th standing in the poll last year.

The Chants were picked by conference coaches to finish last in the preseason poll, which has helped fuel their 6-0 start that includes a win over Big 12 team Kansas and a formerly ranked Louisiana squad. "Everybody picking us last, it was crazy to see in the beginning," junior wide receiver Jaivon Heiligh said following Saturday's win over Georgia State. "They just didn't realize. Hopefully they realize now, and we're not done." - Myrtle Beach Online

In the team's 40-23 loss to Wake Forest, which Armstrong missed with a concussion, the offense lacked consistency at the quarterback position. As a passer, runner and leader, Armstrong brings all three when he's under center. "Brennan Armstrong, the way that he led this team today was just ridiculous," running back Wayne Taulapapa said after Saturday's win. With Armstrong spearheading the charge, Taulapapa believes more offensive fireworks sit on the horizon. UVa scored a season-high in points Saturday, scoring its most points against a top-25 team since dropping 48 on West Virginia in the 2002 Continental Tire Bowl. It's the first time UVa surpassed 40 points in an ACC game since a 48-14 victory over Duke last October. "I think this is the offense that we truly are," Taulapapa said. "We just got to show it every game." A healthy Armstrong remains critical for UVa's offensive hopes. His status moving forward dramatically affects the team's chances at ending the fall with a winning record. When he's on the field, the Cavaliers play their best football. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

NOV 2 SUN BELT OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Grayson McCall, Coastal Carolina,...After missing last week due to a shoulder injury, Grayson McCall looked more than 100 percent in his return in the 51-0 win over Georgia State. The redshirt freshman quarterback was 18-of-24 for 254 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran six times for 15 yards and a score. In just his fifth career start, he was responsible for five touchdowns, which matched the five first downs by the Panthers for the whole game. In his five games this year, he has thrown for two touchdowns or more in all five games, including a career-high four touchdowns twice. He has also thrown for 250 yards or more three times and has thrown for over 1,000 career yards just this season, which ranks 10th all-time in CCU history. - Sun Belt Football

With his team's lead dwindling and his defense getting weary, Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall knew an extended drive might be just what the Cavaliers needed to hang on against No. 15 North Carolina's high-octane offense. A 15-play drive that took more than nine minutes off the clock and ended with a field goal gave the Cavaliers a 44-34 lead, which proved to be just enough. Virginia held on to snap a four-game skid, beating the Tar Heels 44-41 on Saturday night. The drive reached the Tar Heels' 10 before a third-down sack forced Virginia to settle for Brian Delaney's 35-yard field goal.

Brennan Armstrong threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, and Virginia scored 28 consecutive points before the exciting finish to its fourth straight win over the Tar Heels. Armstrong hit Shane Simpson for 71 yards, Ra'Shaun Henry for 18 and Tony Poljan for 17, the latter giving the Cavaliers (2-4, 2-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) a 41-20 lead with 5:34 left in the third quarter. Two quick North Carolina touchdowns then made it interesting. The Tar Heels (4-2, 4-2) rallied behind a fantastic performance from quarterback Sam Howell and receiver Dyami Brown. The pair hooked up for three of Howell's four touchdown passes, covering 54, 10 and 13 yards, the last two with 51 seconds left in the third quarter and then with 13:09 left in the game. - AP College Football

Grayson McCall passed for 254 yards and four touchdowns, Jaivon Heiligh scored twice, and No. 20 Coastal Carolina cruised to a 51-0 victory over Georgia State on Saturday. CJ Marable added two rushing touchdowns and 100 all-purpose yards for the Chanticleers (6-0, 4-0 Sun Belt Conference). Coastal Carolina has its most wins in a single season since joining FBS in 2017. Georgia State (2-3, 1-3) looked nothing like the team that began the day leading the Sun Belt in scoring at 42 points per game. The Panthers' previous two losses were by a combined 10 points with both coming down to the final possession. The Chants struck first to take a 7-0 lead on Heiligh's 35-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter. On fourth-and-seven, McCall connected with a streaking Heiligh on a wheel route as the receiver got behind cornerback Quavian White down the left sideline.

Coastal Carolina made it 14-0 when Marable, coming out of the backfield, ran a route down the left side to easily beat outside linebacker Jordan Strachan for an 18-yard score in the second quarter. The Chants, who churned out 430 yards of total offense, led 34-0 at halftime after Reese White scored on a 13-yard run, Heiligh caught a 10-yard pass for his sixth TD reception of the season and McCall ran for a 2-yard score. Marable added a short TD run on the opening drive of the third to make it 41-0, and Kameron Brown had a touchdown catch near the end of the third. McCall, who missed last week's win over Georgia Southern with an upper body injury, and several of the starters left the game for the entirety of the fourth. Coastal Carolina began the game tied for first in the Sun Belt and ranked 11th nationally with a plus-four turnover margin, including seven interceptions. It added another pick against and fumble recovery against Georgia State. - Coastal Carolina/AP College Football

No. 25 Coastal Carolina will play its first game as a ranked team without starting quarterback Grayson McCall. The team said the freshman would miss the game with Gerogia Southern on Saturday because of an upper body injury. Backup and former starter Fred Payton will open at quarterback. McCall is from Indian Trail, North Carolina, and has been a big reason for the Chanticleers' rise this season. He leads the Sun Belt Conference in passing efficiency with 11 touchdowns against one interception for Coastal Carolina (4-0). McCall threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third when Coastal Carolina defeated then-No. 21 Louisiana-Lafayette 30-27 for its first victory over a ranked opponent. - AP College Football

Through four games, McCall has completed 59 of 87 passes (68%) for 930 yards and 11 touchdowns with one interception, and is second on the team in rushing with 184 yards and three scores on 42 carries. "For me it was more of a matter of when and not if," Hertz said. "He's just too talented and he really demonstrated a ton of leadership and maturity his senior year, and I was just really hoping that would carry over into college and obviously it did." McCall, a business major, is third in college football in QB Rating (passing efficiency) behind only Alabama's Mac Jones and BYU's Zach Wilson, and is fifth in total QBR behind Jones, Florida's Kyle Trask, Clemson's Trevor Lawrence and Georgia's Stetson Bennett.

His two turnovers this season - an interception and fumble - came in the first half against Arkansas State and contributed to the Chants falling behind 7-0 and 14-7. But he showed his resiliency by completing 20 of 29 passes for 322 yards and four touchdowns and rushing for 44 yards on 17 carries in the game to lead CCU to a big 52-23 win. "He was tough," Chadwell said. "It was good to see, because the first two weeks everything was rosy for him. He was great, he's not been touched, and [against Arkansas State] he was smacked around a little bit, and he responded. His toughness I think really showed through." - Myrtle Beach Online

For the second time this season, Coastal Carolina football's Grayson McCall was recognized by The Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, as one of the "Stars of the Week" for week seven. He was also honored for the weekly award back on Sept. 14, following the Chants' season-opening win at Kansas (Sept. 12). Playing in his first Sun Belt Conference road game, McCall went 17-of-24 for 202 yards and two scores through the air, while also running 11 times for 45 yards and a touchdown in the win at No. 21 Louisiana (Oct. 14) last week. On top of being responsible for three touchdowns, McCall directed a final drive for the Chanticleers that set up a game-winning field goal with four seconds to go in the 30-27 conference win. The win over No. 21 Louisiana was the program's first-ever win over an FBS top 25 nationally-ranked program and put the Chants at 2-0 in the Sun Belt for the first time in their four-year FBS history. - Coastal Carolina Football
