  05/21/22 - Max JohnsonrSr/2026, North Carolina, 6-5, 225 (DS#35 QB) + More +

Scoping SEC QB transfers: Eleven quarterbacks transferred to 10 SEC schools this offseason, with South Carolina's Spencer Rattler the lone guaranteed starter of the entire group. Here are On3.com ratings - No. 2. Max Johnson, Texas A&M (from LSU). Max Johnson is Mr. Steady Eddy, and for a quarterback who plays in a very demanding Jimbo Fisher offense, that's an important trait to possess. Texas A&M's intriguing QB battle is likely to last until the final week of training camp. Haynes King or 5-star freshman Conner Weigman could earn the nod later in the season, but stands to be a factor all season. - On3.com

North Carolina football welcomed its second Ohio State transfer in as many days with Tuesday's signing of defensive lineman Jacolbe Cowan. The Charlotte native played at Providence Day School. He joined defensive back Lejond Cavazos, who announced on Monday he was transferring to Carolina after two seasons with the Buckeyes. "I have a long-standing relationship with the staff and players that has never wavered," Cowan said in a statement. "And, who doesn't love coach Mack Brown? This new journey will be special and I can't wait to get to work. Not only is it a great day to be a Tar Heel, but it's great to be home!" Cowan, who is 6-foot-4, 275-pounds, played in five games last season for the Buckeyes and recorded three tackles. He received a redshirt after a season-ending injury in 2020 and will have three years of eligibility remaining. Cowan is the third transfer the Tar Heels have brought in since the end of the season. He'll join Cavazos and linebacker Noah Taylor, who transferred from Virginia. - Raleigh News Observer

Ohio State backup defensive lineman Jacolbe Cowan entered the NCAA's transfer portal on Monday. Cowan, a sophomore from Charlotte, North Carolina, redshirted in 2020 and saw action in five games last season. He recorded two solo tackles and one assisted tackle. He said that he had accepted that it was "time to move on" and that after "much thought and prayer, I have decided to enter the transfer portal." Cowan added that he'd built relationships that will last a lifetime and cherished the memories he'd made at Ohio State. He was a four-star recruit but was unable to climb the depth chart on a Buckeye team loaded with quality defensive linemen. - Columbus Dispatch

  04/20/22 - Tomari FoxrSr/2024, North Carolina, 6-2, 288 (DS#88 DT) + More +

North Carolina won't have defensive end Tomari Fox this season after he lost an NCAA appeal of his punishment for consuming a banned substance. Coach Mack Brown announced Tuesday that Fox is ineligible. The player drank a non-approved over-the-counter pre-workout beverage last year in what Brown described as an inadvertent mistake. "He walked immediately to his locker and pulled what he was drinking out and said, "Coach, I bought this over at the grocery store," Brown said. "And I didn't think there was anything wrong with it. ... I think it's unfair for him. "Obviously he drank something he shouldn't have, but he wasn't trying to beat the system or he sure wouldn't have had it in his locker." Fox started all 12 games in 2020 and played in 12 games last season, starting two. He has had 5.5 sacks over the last two seasons. Fox, who was held out of the Duke's Mayo Bowl as a precaution after the school learned of the violation, is allowed to practice and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining. - AP College Football

North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell is forgoing his senior season to enter the NFL draft. Howell's decision was not surprising, but he made it official Saturday with a video posted on North Carolina football's official Twitter account. He is considered a potential first-round draft pick. The junior will leave college as North Carolina's most prolific quarterback, with career records in yards passing (10,283) and total offense (11,292). The 6-foot-1, 220 pounder from Indiana Trail, North Carolina, was a blue-chip recruit out of high school who changed his mind late and signed with the Tar Heels and coach Mack Brown instead of Florid State. Howell thanked teammates, coaches, North Carolina fans and God during his goodbye video. "I'll forever be grateful for my time here at Carolina and for all the people who made it so special," Howell said. - AP College Football

2021 ALL-SUN BELT SECOND TEAM (COACHES): OL - Willie Lampkin, Coastal Carolina (So., OL - Lakeland, Fla.),...Lampkin picked up All-Sun Belt second-team recognition for the second-straight season this year. He has made 12 starts at the left guard position for the Chants this season, and has played and started all 24 games since stepping foot on campus two years ago. The lone underclassman on the offensive line, the 2020 Freshman All-American again had a strong season in 2021. Lampkin is part of the offensive line unit that leads the way for an offense that leads the nation in third-down conversion percentage (54.1) and team passing efficiency (190.63).

The Chants lead the Sun Belt in third-down conversion percentage (54.1), fourth-down conversion percentage (75.0), completion percentage (70.2), first downs gained (287), fewest interceptions thrown (4), passing yards per completion (15.33), rushing offense (231.2), scoring offense (40.4), and total offense (493.1). The offensive line has allowed just 21 sacks on the season and just 61 tackles-for-loss, averages of 1.75 and 5.08 per game which both rank at the top of the Sun Belt. The offensive line was also named to the Joe Moore Award midseason watch list for the second-straight season. - Coastal Carolina Football

LSU starting quarterback Max Johnson announced Tuesday that he is entering the transfer portal, leaving true freshman Garrett Nussmeier as the Tigers' only scholarship quarterback. Johnson, a sophomore, appeared in all 12 regular-season games for the Tigers, completing 60.3% of his passes for 2,815 yards and 27 touchdowns with six interceptions.   12/10/21 - Sam HowellJr/2022, North Carolina, 6-1, 224 (DS#5 QB) + More +

North Carolina coach Mack Brown tried to bring clarity on Sam Howell's future, where there's still some confusion, while speaking Wednesday about the Tar Heels' invitation to the Duke's Mayo Bowl in Charlotte. Howell, a junior quarterback, will be playing in the game against South Carolina on Dec. 30 in Bank of America Stadium. What is still somewhat unclear is if it will be the last game in a UNC uniform for Howell before he embarks on an NFL career. "I'm really excited about Sam Howell playing and all he's accomplished and what he's done," Brown said. "This could be his last game. He hasn't told us for sure yet." That's the part that has some Carolina fans wondering if Howell is open to the possibility of returning for his senior season.

He participated in Senior Day activities during the Heels' win over Wofford 34-14 on Nov. 20. But even that week before the game, Howell said he hadn't made a decision about his future. His reasoning for being involved with Senior Day was because he will complete his undergraduate degree this semester. Brown is still proceeding as if Howell is going to leave. Brown has been saying since last season that Howell would leave for the NFL after this season because his draft stock is so high. "He's going to be a first-round draft choice in my estimation," Brown said. "His family is getting information just like all the other guys to make that decision. Normally, we've told our guys if you're a first-rounder, go, but he doesn't want to be a distraction for the team." - Raleigh News Observer
