  07/25/22 - *Josh DownsJr/2023, North Carolina, 5-09, 171 (DS#5 WR) + More +

North Carolina wide receiver Josh Downs strolled into the main ballroom of ACC Kickoff media day in an off-white suit he picked from several options mailed to him by the clothing store Express. Playing the role of star player comes with looking the part, too. And frankly, who else is going to do it for the Tar Heels this season? They're breaking in a new quarterback after three-year starter Sam Howell left for the NFL. Their new starting running back is a former walk-on with just one career start to his credit. Their offensive line looks to replace four players from its rotation last season.

Carolina enters the season with a lot of unknowns on offense, and Downs is the only definitive answer. "We played a few teams last year, and their defensive coordinator would come up to me and tell me that their game plan was to stop me," Downs said. "So I feel like a lot of people, when they look at our offense, their main goal may be to stop me. But if that is their main goal, we have other guys that can step up." Downs set school records with the most single-season receptions (101) and yardage (1,335) and fell one game short of tying the school record of nine consecutive games with a touchdown held by Charlie "Choo Choo" Justice. If Downs comes anywhere close to replicating last season, the junior from Suwanee, Ga., could have a chance to turn pro, although he said that's far from on his mind right now. "I'm not really just looking forward to going to the league next January, I'm just focused on the season," Downs said. "We have a big task at hand. We got a lot of people to prove wrong. And if we if we don't play up to our ability, and if I don't play up to my ability, none of this matters." - Raleigh News Observer

  07/22/22 - Max JohnsonrSr/2026, North Carolina, 6-5, 225 (DS#29 QB) + More +

We could meet again. LSU junior defensive end BJ Ojulari is hopeful he can have some fun and sack former Tiger roommate and quarterback Max Johnson who transferred to A&M. "Me, being me, I'd probably just have a good laugh at it and then probably see him after the game and give him a hug," Ojulari said. LSU linebacker Mike Jones Jr., said he'd probably talk a little more trash to Johnson if he gets to sack him on Nov. 26 when they play at Kyle Field. "I'd say, 'Miss you,' or something like that," Jones said. Johnson, who started 12 games for LSU last season, is competing at A&M with sophomore Haynes King who started the first two games last season before suffering a season-ending injury. "I support Max's decision [to transfer]," Ojulari said. "He felt like he needed to be there. He's a great, decent person both on and off the field." - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Next week, the ACC will host its annual Football Kickoff event. At this event, representatives from all 14 programs come together at The Westin Charlotte in Charlotte, North Carolina. The event is essentially a two-day media session in which players and coaches are available to answer questions about their teams heading into the 2022 regular season. For the second consecutive year, each of the league's 14 teams will bring three players to the annual media event. Here's who will be representing the UNC Football program at this year's event: Head Coach Mack Brown, Running Back British Brooks, Wide Receiver Josh Downs, Defensive Tackle Ray Vohasek. It's no surprise that Downs is one of the Tar Heels' three representatives, as he's coming off a tremendous sophomore season and is expected to follow it up with another strong performance in 2022. - Keeping It Heel

  06/27/22 - Drake MayerSo/2024, North Carolina, 6-4, 223 (DS#3 QB) + More +

People ask North Carolina redshirt freshman quarterback Drake Maye who will be the starter come their Aug. 27 opener against Florida A&M so often that he has a canned answer ready. Truth is, he doesn't know yet. Maye is locked in a battle with sophomore Jacolby Criswell to replace three-year starter Sam Howell, who left UNC a year early to go to the NFL where he was drafted by Washington. Spring drills came and went with neither Maye or Criswell emerging as the favorite.

Of all the starters who have to be replaced off last year's team, who will take over for Howell is the most heavily scrutinized. "It seems to be the No. 1 question," said Maye, who is the younger brother of former UNC basketball star Luke Maye and the son of former UNC quarterback Mark Maye. "I just tell them we're both competing, and we're doing whatever we can, and it's gonna play out how it plays out." The competition hasn't stopped just because fall camp hasn't started yet. And it manifests itself in everything the two players do. They try to be the first to show up for workouts even if it's just the position group and the majority of players don't know - and probably don't care. - Raleigh News Observer

  05/21/22 - Max JohnsonrSr/2026, North Carolina, 6-5, 225 (DS#29 QB) + More +

Scoping SEC QB transfers: Eleven quarterbacks transferred to 10 SEC schools this offseason, with South Carolina's Spencer Rattler the lone guaranteed starter of the entire group. Here are On3.com ratings - No. 2. Max Johnson, Texas A&M (from LSU). Max Johnson is Mr. Steady Eddy, and for a quarterback who plays in a very demanding Jimbo Fisher offense, that's an important trait to possess. Texas A&M's intriguing QB battle is likely to last until the final week of training camp. Haynes King or 5-star freshman Conner Weigman could earn the nod later in the season, but stands to be a factor all season. - On3.com

North Carolina football welcomed its second Ohio State transfer in as many days with Tuesday's signing of defensive lineman Jacolbe Cowan. The Charlotte native played at Providence Day School. He joined defensive back Lejond Cavazos, who announced on Monday he was transferring to Carolina after two seasons with the Buckeyes. "I have a long-standing relationship with the staff and players that has never wavered," Cowan said in a statement. "And, who doesn't love coach Mack Brown? This new journey will be special and I can't wait to get to work. Not only is it a great day to be a Tar Heel, but it's great to be home!" Cowan, who is 6-foot-4, 275-pounds, played in five games last season for the Buckeyes and recorded three tackles. He received a redshirt after a season-ending injury in 2020 and will have three years of eligibility remaining. Cowan is the third transfer the Tar Heels have brought in since the end of the season. He'll join Cavazos and linebacker Noah Taylor, who transferred from Virginia. - Raleigh News Observer

Ohio State backup defensive lineman Jacolbe Cowan entered the NCAA's transfer portal on Monday. Cowan, a sophomore from Charlotte, North Carolina, redshirted in 2020 and saw action in five games last season. He recorded two solo tackles and one assisted tackle. He said that he had accepted that it was "time to move on" and that after "much thought and prayer, I have decided to enter the transfer portal." Cowan added that he'd built relationships that will last a lifetime and cherished the memories he'd made at Ohio State. He was a four-star recruit but was unable to climb the depth chart on a Buckeye team loaded with quality defensive linemen. - Columbus Dispatch
