  Tar Heels coach Mack Brown knew that eventually he had to take the handcuffs off freshman quarterback Sam Howell. With South Carolina stacking the box and daring the Tar Heels to throw, Brown decided he had no other option than to let Howell try to make some plays. Howell responded in a big way throwing for 245 yards and two fourth quarter touchdowns as North Carolina battled back from an 11-point deficit to beat South Carolina 24-20 on Saturday. Howell led touchdown drives of 98 and 95 yards and connected on TD passes of 22 yards to Dyami Brown and 17 yards to Beau Corrales to give Brown his first win since 2013, when he coached at Texas.

"We were very conservative with Sam Howell around the goal line early," Brown said. "And we felt like at halftime, he's a quarterback, we have to turn him loose. And he played a tremendous second half." Conservative might be an understatement. North Carolina ran 12 plays inside the South Carolina 25-yard line in the first half and 11 were runs. The only pass attempt resulted in a sack. "We didn't take any shots in the first half," said Howell, the first true freshman to start a season opener in school history.   Sam Howell went from being a Florida State recruit to starting at North Carolina in rapid fashion. Now the Tar Heels are ready to find out how he handles game pressure in his first college snaps. Howell will start Saturday against South Carolina in Charlotte, with the school saying he's believed to be the first true freshman to start a season opener in program history. That followed the four-star recruit flipping his commitment from FSU in December, enrolling at UNC in January then finishing on top of a three-way battle for the starting job in preseason camp.

"I'm a calm guy, I usually stay pretty calm," Howell said. "But I'll be honest: yeah, there is going to be some nerves. I'm not scared or anything like that, but it is a big stage. It's a stage I really haven't been on before. But I'm confident in myself, I'm confident in my team and I know my teammates have got my back." The only public look at Howell in Longo's offense came in the spring game, with him completing 10 of 16 passes for 131 yards and a perfectly thrown deep ball for a 42-yard score. Still, South Carolina coach Will Muschamp said the Gamecocks know plenty about him; they recruited him, too. "He's got arm talent, set all kinds of records in high school," Muschamp said. "A guy that's got ability to run the ball. He's a competitor, a battler. He can make all the throws as far as the touch throws. He can zip it.   North Carolina is starting true freshman Sam Howell at quarterback for Saturday's opener against South Carolina in Charlotte. Howell started preseason camp in a three-way battle for the starting job with redshirt freshmen Jace Ruder and Cade Fortin. But new coach Mack Brown said Aug. 18 that Howell would start working with the first-team offense in preseason practices, and Howell remained in control of the job. As a result, Ruder is now the backup on Monday's depth chart while Fortin has informed the team of his plan to transfer. Brown said Monday other schools have contacted the Tar Heels about Fortin and that they were "very, very positive" in supporting Fortin's efforts. Brown also said walk-on freshman Vincent Amendola will now serve as the team's No. 3 quarterback. - AP College Football

  North Carolina coach Mack Brown says true freshman quarterback Sam Howell will start working with the first-team offense in preseason practices. Brown said Sunday that Howell's consistency had given him an edge in a three-way competition with redshirt freshmen Cade Fortin and Jace Ruder. The plan is for Fortin and Ruder to split reps behind Howell with just less than two weeks to go until the opener against South Carolina in Charlotte on Aug. 31. Howell was a touted in-state recruit who flipped his commitment from Florida State to UNC shortly after Brown's return for a second stint in Chapel Hill. - AP College Football

The Inman, S.C., native missed his first two attempts in 2018 before finishing the campaign with 11 consecutive makes, just one shy of the Furman record.   Jason Strowbridge, a 6-4, 285-pound defensive lineman, was impressive in his first day back from injury, Brown said. Strowbridge suffered a foot injury and did not practice in the spring. Last season, he was one of UNC's best players. He had 36 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 7.5 tackles for loss and a blocked kick. "Strowbridge, I've never seen him before today, except on film," he said. "He's really quick and he's big and he's got the long arms for pass rush. Our guys had trouble blocking him in the pass-rush drills." - Raleigh News Observer

  On Friday, the Tar Heels participated in their first day of training camp, nearly a year after Crawford sustained his knee injury. Crawford was there, and he participated in each drill. Crawford, whose beard resembles that of the rapper Rick Ross, has shed the brace he once had to wear. He said he was excited about the new season. UNC coach Mack Brown called Crawford, and senior defensive lineman Jason Strowbridge, the "kingpins of our front." "We need to stop the run better, and they are a key part of that," Brown said.   2019 PRESEASON PAUL HORNUNG AWARD WATCH LIST: Dazz Newsome, North Carolina,...Newsome, from Hampton, Va., displayed his versatility as a sophomore in 2018 by hauling in 44 receptions for 506 yards and two TDs as a receiver. He added 96 yards rushing and a TD on seven carries. Newsome also returned six kickoffs for 125 yards (20.8 ypr) and 19 punts for 286 yards (15.1 ypr) and a TD. All together he tallied 1,103 all-purpose yards on the season, an average of 92.1 yards per game.   2019 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Ty Chandler (Jr.), Tennessee,...Chandler has proven to be one of the SEC's most explosive and versatile running backs over his two seasons on Rocky Top. The Nashville, Tenn., native led the Vols with 630 rushing yards on 115 carries (5.5 ypc) in 2018, while hauling in 19 receptions for 183 yards. He led UT with seven total touchdowns with four coming on the ground and three scoring grabs.

He became the first Vol since 2006 with two runs of 75 yards or more. Chandler also permanently etched his name in the Tennessee record books as the first Vol running back to record a touchdown reception in three consecutive games. He ran for a career-high 158 yards against UTEP early in the season and closed out the fall with 80 or more yards rushing in the final three games. Chandler rushed for 305 yards and two touchdowns as a freshman in 2018 and also ranked fourth in the SEC with a 26.1 kickoff return average. - Tennessee Football

  2019 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Michael Carter (Jr.), North Carolina,...Carter, a native of Navarre, Florida, posted 597 yards and two TDs on 84 carries in nine games as a sophomore. He caught 25 passes for 135 yards and a TD. He earned ACC Running Back of the Week honors by exploding for 165 yards on 18 carries against Virginia Tech. Later in the year, he tallied 148 yards and a TD on 18 rushes at Duke. Carter was also listed on the Doak Walker Award preseason list in 2018 after a stellar freshman year that saw him score a team-leading eight rushing TDs and finish with 559 yards on 97 carries in 2017. - North Carolina Football
