North Carolina linebacker Chazz Surratt has turned out to be a natural at his new position: The older brother of Wake Forest WR Sage Surratt had a team-best 12 tackles against Duke plus a sack, and intercepted a jump pass at the goal line with 14 seconds to seal the 20-17 victory over the Blue Devils. Ironically, Surratt was a quarterback for Duke's previous visit to Chapel Hill two years ago and threw an interception that helped seal the Blue Devils' victory. - AP College Football

OCT 28 SOCON SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Grayson Atkins, Furman, Jr., K, Inman, S.C.,...Furman kicker Grayson Atkins earned his third weekly award of the season and the sixth of his career for his performance in the Paladins' 28-7 win over Western Carolina in rainy conditions. The junior from Inman, South Carolina, punted twice on the day, placing both inside the WCU 20-yard line, and kicked off five times, averaging 64.6 yards per kicked and recording four touchbacks to run his season total to 30 on 46 kickoffs. Atkins scored eight points on the afternoon, converting both point-after attempts and going 2-for-3 on field-goal tries.

He connected from 55 yards in the first quarter to match the school record for distance and extend his own school mark to 18 consecutive field-goal makes before a bad snap on a 33-yard attempt brought that streak to a halt. Atkins rebounded with a 40-yard make on the final play of the first half to send the Paladins into the break with a 13-7 lead. Other nominees: Jacob Godek (The Citadel), Colin Brewer (Chattanooga) and Luke Carter (Wofford). - Southern Conference Football

North Carolina got the big defensive stop it needed in yet another drama-filled finish. Chazz Surratt picked off Deon Jackson's trick-play pass at the goal line with 14 seconds left, helping the Tar Heels hang on for a 20-17 win on Saturday night that reclaimed the rivalry's Victory Bell. The Blue Devils had pushed from their own 6-yard line after a UNC turnover to inside the UNC 5 with less than a minute to play. But with no timeouts, Jackson took a handoff and attempted a jump-pass while being hit that was snagged by Surratt, the QB-turned-linebacker who had leapt to deflect the ball but instead ended up corralling it for a game-saving takeaway.

Surratt said the Tar Heels (4-4, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) had discussed that the play could be coming during a timeout only moments before. "We were expecting it," Surratt said. "I thought he'd throw it a little higher and jumped. It came right to me. I just wanted to get it and make sure I got the ball in my hands and (get) on the ground." It was another close-call win for a UNC team that has played seven games decided by six or fewer points, with each being decided in the final 80 seconds. "We're TV darlings because we come down to the last drive on every game we've play but one," UNC coach Mack Brown said. "And this, again the last play." The Tar Heels celebrated by sprinting across the field as time expired to reclaim the Victory Bell that had been in Duke's possession the past three seasons. - North Carolina/AP College Football

  10/24/19 - Sam HowellJr/2022, North Carolina, 6-1, 224 (DS#5 QB) + More +

North Carolina QB Sam Howell has been tough to stop during his freshman season with the Tar Heels. Howell matched a school record with five touchdown passes in last week's six-overtime loss to Virginia Tech, and has reached the 300-yard mark in three of his last four games. Next up is a Duke team that has held six straight opponents to fewer than 270 yards passing. - AP College Football

Sam Howell has moved well past freshman-level studies at North Carolina. He is playing his way to the top of the class of Atlantic Coast Conference's quarterbacks. Howell leads the ACC with 20 touchdown passes after tying the North Carolina record with five in last week's 43-41, six-overtime loss to Virginia Tech. He passed for 348 yards with no interceptions and was named the conference's top quarterback of the week for the third time this season. For North Carolina offensive coordinator Phil Longo, it's more proof that Howell is no ordinary first-year quarterback. He said Howell is "beyond the 101 stage" of lessons.

"I mean, Sam, he studies the game, he cares, he's passionate about it," Longo said Monday. "That's all part of what makes him as good as he is right now, and we still have things we need to get better at. But I really like where the process is and I like the fact that he accepts just about every challenge I give him." Howell was a unanimous selection for the ACC's top freshman of the first half of the season in balloting by The Associated Press writers covering the conference. It was the only unanimous vote of nine categories. He has set a school record for touchdown passes by a freshman while throwing only three interceptions. He is a key to coach Mack Brown's rebuilding effort at North Carolina (3-4, 2-2 ACC) entering Saturday's game against Duke (4-3, 2-2). - AP College Football
