2019 ACC ROOKIE & OFFENSIVE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR (COACHES): Sam Howell, QB, North Carolina, 49/54 Votes,...The first true freshman quarterback in UNC football history to start a season opener, Howell leads the ACC with 3,347 yards passing and 35 touchdowns. His 35 touchdown passes are the most in a single season by an ACC true freshman and the most by any quarterback in UNC history regardless of class. With one game remaining, Howell is currently tied with former Clemson All-American Deshaun Watson (2015) for the fourth-most touchdown passes thrown in one season by an ACC player.

Howell joins Ohio State's Justin Fields as the only quarterbacks in the nation to throw multiple touchdown passes in each of his 12 games this season. Also voted the ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year, Howell is one of just three QBs nationally (Fields and LSU's Joe Burrow) to throw at least 35 touchdown passes with seven or fewer interceptions. A native of Indian Trail, North Carolina, Howell is the fifth UNC player to be selected the ACC's overall Rookie of the Year and the first since current Tar Heel assistant coach Dre' Bly in 1996. - ACC Football

North Carolina is headed back to a bowl game in the first year of Mack Brown's second stint as coach after Javonte Williams scored two touchdowns rushing and another receiving in the third quarter Saturday night to spark a 41-10 win over rival N.C. State. The Tar Heels (6-6, 4-4 ACC) trailed 10-6 at halftime before Williams busted free up the middle for a 26-yard scoring run on UNC's second possession of the second half to give his team the lead for good. On the Tar Heels' next two possessions, Williams caught an 11-yard flare pass for a touchdown and scored on a 6-yard run as UNC stretched its lead.

N.C. State (4-8, 1-7) finished the season on a six-game losing streak despite scoring the only touchdown of the first half on a 39-yard pass from Devin Leary to Tabari Hines. The Wolfpack held UNC to 24 rushing yards and two field goals in the first half as Williams managed just seven yards on four carries. But a four-touchdown outburst by the Tar Heels in the third quarter turned the game into a rout. UNC intercepted Leary twice and recovered a Zonovan Knight fumble for three takeaways in the quarter. Williams rushed for 51 yards and two touchdowns on five carries in the quarter and added three catches for 42 yards and another score. - North Carolina/AP College Football

  11/23/19 - Sam HowellJr/2022, North Carolina, 6-1, 224 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Sam Howell threw for three first-half scores to set a single-season record for the most TD throws by a true freshman in Bowl Subdivision history as North Carolina beat Mercer 56-7 in its home finale Saturday. Howell completed 10 of 13 passes for 152 yards and scores of 66, 4 and 33 yards in a dominating opening half for the Tar Heels (5-6). That gave him 32 TD throws on the year to surpass Trevor Lawrence's 30 for eventual national champion Clemson last year as the most by a true freshman in FBS history, according to Sportradar. Howell's TD total also broke the program's single-season record for any player (30) set by eventual No. 2 overall NFL draft pick Mitch Trubisky in 2016.

The Tar Heels scored touchdowns on their first six drives to lead 42-0 before the break, showing no trouble handling an overmatched Championship Subdivision opponent nor the cold and steady rain that lasted much of the way. "The afternoon and night was exactly what we needed," UNC coach Mack Brown said. "We dominated the game. Our guys were ready to play. They took the game over early. The game was over at halftime, so we got to play basically everybody who was eligible on our team, which helps morale. And we didn't get anybody hurt. So it was the perfect night for us." Michael Carter ran for 159 yards and three scores for UNC, including a 60-yarder on the first offensive snap after halftime. - North Carolina/AP College Football
